Am I too sensitive to the multi-boxer hate?

About a month ago I was in Nagrand doing the Ring of Blood and was helping other groups do the quest, up comes this guy cursing me in /say about me being a cheater. I kept on helping the groups that came up, including the group the cursing guy was joined, he died and sent me a tell for a rez which I gave him. After helping this one group I started the quest and the group just stood there while I died, they then rode away laughing. The next day the same thing happened.

I quit playing WoW.

So patch 3.02 came out and back I come to WoW, I'm almost 70 now. Last night in IF one of my Shaman gets this tell "I can have you banned for using that addon" I ignored the tell, the guy starts in /yell about how I was a cheater and for everyone to report me. I got so mad but kept quiet.

I box mostly to do instances because I like to run an instance over and over and I hate waiting for a group. I always drop one of my characters to invite someone (even strangers) if they need a group, I stop boxing and bring one or more of my characters to help friends run an instance, I randomly help people as I'm passing by if they are in trouble.

All in all I feel that I'm a positive influence on my server.

I just get so mad and hurt when I get called a cheater. So am I too sensitive? Any tips on how to not get so upset? Sorry I just felt like venting I guess.

It took some getting used to but I just report spam these idiots now. I use to try to explain it to people now I just hit my "www.dual-boxing.com It's not cheating/hacking its multiboxing" macro and ignore them. You're a better person than I, I wouldn't have helped the idiots that were hating on me.

Same.. Luckily I had nitro deal with all the server hate before I came rolling along.

if you wrote this thread, you are too sensitive. Maybe going to bootcamp and dealing with jerks in the service helped me, but what I have seen in game is pretty laughable.

I find it easier to not respond to such ppl at all. Most ppl that hang out in IF or Shatt know those who cause trouble and most probably have them on /ignore as it is. lol

I was in SM last night after trying to kill the horseman, and was in the "lobby" (where all the instances are) with about 5 other horde killing Alliance as they entered. The pile of skellies was something to be proud of :D

Anyways, a new group of horde comes in to zone in. I see in /say: ewwww, dual boxer (this is after all the cheers and love from the horde I'm 'defending' SM with)

He then /says I hate dual boxers!

Me: So leave.
Him: Get bent
Me: Oh, you're a tough guy (he then zones)

Everybody else was laughing. Moral of the story, either ignore it or come up with a witty comeback. Just don't curse or harrass them, they're probably baiting you to be reported. I do report them when they curse, it just shows their true immaturity.

Every now and then, I'll loose my stoic resolve and let the hecklers get to me. A lot of the accusations are baseless. I wanted to start a guild called <Read the Fucking EULA Before You Send Me a Goddamn Whisper> but it wouldn't fit. I wish only educated, rational people played MMOs, but gamers come from society. And society attempts instill such values, but people, by their choose or choose not to conform. That's life.

When it comes to overt hostility, you've got to remember Internet Dickwad Theory. Anyone that *is playing* an MMO and accuses another person who *is also playing* an MMO of being a loser, inept, reprobate, has no life, etc... really has no moral or logical basis. It's like someone in jail accusing a cellmate of being a criminal. They, themselves, aren't in jail because they're just free-spirit. Arguing with a)hostile b)idiots c) on the internet is pointless on several counts. It's like winning the Special Olympics. Any way you look at it, you're still a fucking retard [yes, I'm going to hell].

I've found that matter where I go, there's always stupid people to be found who want you to know their opinion.

Being a multiboxer your noticed more, so you'll get random praise as well. Just have to soak in the compliments and reflect the negative.
I can run around BG's and will be accused of farming characters just to sell them. Even with a Gladiator title and full S4 gear. It's bonkers :)

/ignore is really great. I know it is trite, but /ignore banishes the annoying person from your life. Be thankful this isn't Asheron's Call where there was collision detection between charactes and you could actually bunp, nudge and block people.

No one can make you feel bad. How you react is YOUR choice. As for myself, I know I'm doing nothing wrong, so I tend to just ignore people who act like this.

Just smile and nod... that's what I do...

Actually, I tell them, "Yes, I am a cheater. Please report me, and when you do report me, send me a mail in-game and let me know what the GM's response was." .. Followed by the /ignore.

Sometimes I won't ignore the player though, but rather I'll send them a message a week or so later like, "How did that reporting work out for you? I'm curious, because a GM hasn't talked to me yet."

I've never had anyone reply, nor have I ever talked to a GM :-)

One quick pull of my accounts, and a GM would see that a) all of the accounts are coming from the same IP address, b) the characters are fighting in sync, c) the name registered on the accounts is the same, and d) the credit card paying for the accounts is the same. No problems there.

Read up all the threads in the GM Conversations wiki. Then, realize, the people calling you "cheaters" are actually the ones that need your pity, and understand their superiority complex as the driving force for their baseless hate. It's not you with the problem -- it's them.

Sensitivity is well and good - but keep in mind. You're legitimately playing the game. They are harassing you. If they harass you to the point of quitting, I have to ask -- why didn't you report them to a GM and shove them on /ignore? It's certainly your right -- you're not the one breaking the rules. Harassment is very much against the rules.

I will admit some people do complain a lot about people that multi box but i havent had that problem yet but i do only multi box 2 to 3 accounts and the toons are so different that people dont seem to notice at this time i am doing a gnome warlock and a dreanei preist and they are both at about lvl 40 and yes the money problem comes up all the time just means i have to rob my 2 lvl 70's for cash lol and just ingnore the idiots that dont know what you are doing it takes all sorts of people to play wow and like in real life there are jerks and morons out there just have fun thats what its all about.

I was pretty sure there would be resistance, but WOW. I was eager to get in to work on the Horseman for the first time so I just ran my guys back, rezzed right next to the graveyard portal, and zipped in.

Didn't see you there, though. Tonight I guess I will see I can return some of the pain. I've been waiting to run into you :D

Suggestion: in the chat options, uncheck "player yell". You don't need it. That only leaves whispers and say for you to deal with. Most bad comments that I've seen are one line "Cheater" or some such, which I don't even respond to. I'd suggest that you don't either.

Mostly, I get several favorable comments for every nasty one, which you will likely as well, should you decide to stick with it. Anyway, why would you care what some ten year old playing on his mom's computer calls you? LOL, must be an echo in here! :P 8o :P

I was wondering if there was an Alliance shaman team. Do you ever do the Isle dailies? I'll be there tonite if you want to make some fun (or just a lot of stares from both factions :p)

I'll probably also be at SM again as well, this time with mana pots and mana oil, and probably some stam/spell food in me. It is my new quest in life to beat the horseman!

I just have to say:

When people make claims that you're cheating, I find the best response is a logical, patient one. Usually I just explain I have multiple accounts, and I'm working on mastering to control them with one keyboard. Then they say something about how much money I pay, and I crack a joke about paying more for gas than the 60 per month for 5 toons. Then they almost always ease up and appreciate the lighthearted responses and cheer me later on. Eventually a lot of people on your server start recognizing you and either accept you or admire you. I've had nasty people /yell cheater and stuff, only to eventually accept me when then realize what i'm doing is pretty neat.

In BGs I have a little more tolerance than normal and typically just ignore tells because I'm busy owning stuff up. But even there sometimes I take the time to point them to wowwiki's multiboxing entry, and later on they see me in BGs again and cheer me.

I don't think ignoring clears anything up, I definitely don't think making immature responses to immature remarks makes friends either. Simple friendly responses go a long way in the end.

I got my very first negative comment yesterday. Was just turning in a very very gray quest at TM when a level 25 undead rogue pointed at me and said, "Gold famrers (sic)!".

I just lol'd and said nope. They said the probability was yes. And I just said, welp, you're wrong. That was it. Still dunno why multiboxing = gold farming with people but whatever. It didn't bother me but it wasn't really nasty either.

i just ignore it.

My 5 shaman are now level 22 on Medivh. Luckily, I haven't had any hate whispers/tells just yet. All of the conversations have been from curious people who initially thought I was botting. But after some explanation, they seemed to understand that I was multiboxing.

Invariably, I get stopped every time I go into a city by people. So now I just have a macro that says, "I'm multiboxing, go to dual-boxing.com for an explanation of how to do it."

My most interesting conversation happened when I was doing the Kessel run - that one quest on Dranei island where you have to ride to three characters in 15 minutes. I had a few minutes left and this guy kept asking questions. Finally, I just said I'm on a timed quest right now, I really have to go.

They tell me Im a gold farmer, I simply reply...

Ni hao!

I hang out in Orgrimmar a lot on my druids, doing synchronized dancing and whatnot... when i toss regrowth and rejuv on one person so they instantly have 10 hots, they always get excited. Performing for a crowd always seems to make a lot of friends, and makes it obvious that you're doing it for fun. Performing obviously isn't for everyone, it takes a lot of coordination and you have to take the time to set up keybinds for different formations, plus if your computer isn't up to it you may get too much lag in crowded areas. ALSO, performing for the crowd often scores you gold! I've had people just walk up to one of my guys while i'm /dancing or something and throw 25g+ into trade. Another time, someone walked up to me and gave me 5 pairs of pretty good crafted shoulders!
Yeah, I still get people that say 'CHEATER' or 'WOW UR LAME LOL' but I tend to ignore them or /shoo them :P
seriously, the biggest thing is just communicating and responding in a friendly manner to curious people, and take all the negative comments in stride. you're not doing anything wrong.

i havn't really had any bad karma at all
and barthilus imo is a very childish server so *shrugz*

I can honestly say, that I never notice anyone commenting on my skills, or lack there-of. I'm usually so busy doing whatever I'm there to do that I pay very little attention to the chat window. All my friends know me and send a tell to get my attention (annoying beep!!!) If it's not a friend of mine, I ignore what they have to say. A) They don't know me, B) They obviously don't know the work and skill it takes to not play several toons at once and C) They haven't read the EULA.
That said, sometimes I try to explain it and try to remember that most negativity stems from ignorance of the facts. When they are enlightened, their tune usually changes to one of respect, frequently with requests to help them with an instance.

My suggestion to you would be to do what I tell everyone to do. Have Fun and don't let someone else tell you how to have fun. If it's not fun, don't do it. It's a game. Games are meant to be fun, not a drag. But being positive in the light of so much negativity is rough, even at the best of times. /ignore helps out a bit, but education of the facts will, imo, win in the end. Make a macro to help out. After all, that is what multiboxing is all about [img]../forum/images/smilies/biggrin.png[/img]

Side Note: I loved the idea of making a note of some really annoying person's name, and contacting them later about the report they put in. I may give that one a shot sometime just for kicks.

Only thing is, probably 90% of the time they're just bluffing, and there's no way to know for sure. So if they're bluffing and you /w them, they're just going to say something like "LOL u fell 4 taht u dumass? stupid n00b"
