Pharazon back again after deployment,
Alienware order got cancelled so looking aroud for much cheaper hardware solution for my main box. IN PX saw HP pavillion with AMD quad core and about 5 GB of ddr 2 ram. Nvidia 9200 series for about 900$. Its using vista so not certain if 5 would be solid for muti boxing 4-5 toons. The exact machien is the the HP Pavillion 8530. I was also trying to find out if I could exsapnd the memory but not sure !@!!

I don't reccomend a quad core for gaming.
Most games out right now don't support multi threading, and even if they do they don't take advantage of quad cores very well(as far as i know)
At most go for a dual core.
Then again my info might be outdated =)
Whole different thing when multiboxing, since then you can make one WoW run on Core #1, another on Core #2, yet another on Core #3, etc. etc. etc.Quote:

I'm not even sure how you would get to 5GB of ram in a system... As for the AMD Quad Core, you need to be absolutely certain you know WHICH AMD Quad core it hsa in it. The 9600 Phenom I have suffers from what is called the "TLB Eratta" which basically taps between 10 and 50% of the CPU's speed unless you turn it off, however with the TLB Eratta off you have a less stable system. It's also something that thanks to Vista, you have to turn off with a 3rd party hack, etc etc... The newer Phenoms with 9X50 designators (9650, 9750, 9850) don't suffer this flaw and should be fine.Quote:

And as much as I'd hate to agree with Fursphere, the intel Quad Cores are a better deal. My Phenom system doesn't sit far from the bleeding edge yet I can't even begin to compare performance with guys with the intels higher than the Q6600... and I have no significant upgrade path either... the 2.3ghz chip I have could be replaced by a 2.6ghz chip... I'd LOVE to see a 3ghz quad core from AMD but thats not even a rumor yet.

When I run my wows, they are all going off of the 1st 2 processors.
How do you you tell your machine to run each client from a specific processor?
You can set up the core affinity(i think it's called) in octopus and keyclone, or do it manually in the task manager.

That would be accurate, yet the Phenom 9600 requires a significant amount of research and hacking to make work as well as the 9600. I've been working with computers since 1984, did my first OC on my Amiga 500 which required a physical hardware hack... and brought it to a whopping 14mhz... The 9600 is the first CPU I've ever purchased that left me truely disappointed. It was a SERIOUS sidegrade from my X2 6000 until I found the information about the TLB eratta and was able to disable the "fix" they put out. And still, my machine has a risk of crashing now, but I'd rather crash extremely rarely than have a high end chip reigned in...Quote:

I'd hate to think about all those folks out there with Phenom 9600 chips that don't have the resources to fix it... for that matter, I'm anxiously waiting for a 3.0ghz phenom, only 400mhz to go from their current best-of-breed chips, so hopefully I can see something before Christmas.
First off, the Q6600's rock!
And as far as setting cpu affininity goes, In Octopus under the Profiles configuration dialog you add a new Config.wtf modification named processAffinityMask the values are a bit mask so Processor 1 = 1, Processor 2 = 2, Processor 3 = 4, Processor 4 = 8. If you wanted to set processor 1&2 you would set it to 3. You can't assign affinity to more than two cores. I'll leave figuring out bitmasking up to you, but here's a little hint: It's additive!
A good affinity assignment for 4 shamans on one box is 2, 4, 8, 8, which leaves core 1 100% available to the OS and background tasks.
Aye know this all... i have Phenom E3 steping and i nont have a problem TLB... and i have ASUS m3a32-mvp deluxe for full use my cpu. But I used many different tests and I will tell that if I knew earlier that would buy Intel Q6600. The Same money, and productivity above on 20 %Quote:
