[Keyclone] how to not get wiped when your main dies...

(i recently sent this in a email... and figured others would like to see it...)

you should also try to remove the concept of your 'main' from your head. there is no main... just the currently active one and your alts. don't get mentally tied to any one character (unless its a tank)... when the active dies, you will need to be able to switch over as fast as possible to continue the fight, or they are all dead.

this is where pip comes in. you have 2 things to set up. one in keyclone and the other in wow. in keyclone, set your pip hotkeys for each region (i'll assume f8-f12 for discussion... just never use shift/alt/ctrl with these keys.. in the heat of battle, fumbling a key is very likely). then, in wow, set up 5 macros in each wow (25 total)... they would set your focus and follow.
ie:
/focus joe
/follow focus

that would be a single macro, and you would have it on ALL your wows... and you would associate it with f8, being your first wow.
next:
/focus sam
/follow focus

sam is your 2nd wow... and set that to f9. repeat for all your wows... for a total of 25 macros on the exact same 5 keys as your pip swap.

if you do it right... and joe is in the main region... and gets killed... you hit f9 and joe will swap with sam.. and all your remaining alts will now be focused on sam and following him. this allows you to click on a new target with sam and fire.. with your alts following his direction.

Gotta say i appreciate this post, i don't die much but when my main screen dies it definetly becomes a bitch as i'm still learning a ton, even your macro suggestions(which seem so obvious to me now) will immensly help me out when it comes, to targeting mobs and such as that was my biggest issue when my main would die, would be my targetting system would be messed right up, now i will just reprogram all my macros to assist focus in combination with your focus/follow macro's and I should be fine thanks for the post again.

Here is how i set it up with the PiP using keyclone with my 4 shammies. (G1-G4 refers to G15 shortcut keys)
For this example I have toon1 through toon4. Toon1 is my main. I could probably get creative here and have it automatically follow and assist when performing the switch.

I'm providing two examples, but i repeat this for all 4 toons following the pattern.

For my combat macros I use the following on every account (toon1 through toon4):
If the toon casting has a focus (which it only will when its NOT the master) it will assist the master and cast. If the toon casting IS the master, then it won't have a focus and just cast at your target. We provide a script command to supress any errors we might encounter (such as no focus). You can use this for any assisted combat attack.

Well I am max on my macros in wow so I cant make a focus for each toon. What I have is 1 macro to focus with modifiers.. So F9 does one guy, alt F9 another, Shift f9 another Ctrl F9 another ect.. I tried to do PIP but it doesnt like modifiers. Until they give us more macro room in wow I prob wont ever get to enjoy PIP.

i'm currently using PiP along with modifiers.. Haven't run into many problems yet.

Basically this is my setup (I added an extra slave3 for 5boxers). Since I 3box I have a shortened version of this, but basically when I hit this on my slaves it focuses my main on their screens and follows her. If she dies I hit the button again and it moves to the next slave that's alive, and if she's dead then moves to the next one until there is one left (which is why there isn't one for slave4 since she would have no need to follow anyone if I 5boxed :P). Simple, fits into one macro per alt, and I think it does the trick quite nicely.

Please, correct me if I misunderstood your post, but I think this simplifies what you were trying to do? *hopeful*

that is similar to what i was showing... normally, i try to lay out very simple macros as to reduce confusion in its function.

i think we should try to petition blizzard for more macro spots... and maybe a better key-macro mapping capability (like the macro name.. next to the key.. similar to the key bindings)

(and yes... i had considered doing this within keyclone.. but it was suggested that i stay clear of it as it's in the 'gray' area)

You get more General macros in the XP.

Character macros stay the same.

Malkorix is talking about using the Logitech G15 as "extra storage for normal macros". Sounds fair game to me.


As an alternative, the bar mod "TrinityBars" allows for the storage of additional in-game macros as well as increased length on macros.

I planned to do this on my warlocks so I could rotate through shadowfuryx5 easily, but I'm having trouble with PiP. Sometimes I'll hit the hotkey to rotate to the next guy (main numb 0, alt1 numbperiod, alt2 numb1, ect) and sometimes it just won't switch. feels like it locks onto the main and won't go from main to alt1, but it can be fixed by trying alt3's hotkey and then going back to alt2. Just seems to lock up once and a while and won't let you switch unless you try a third option. I haven't bothered trying to figure out what is going on at the moment, but it's something I planned to look into when I close in on 70. Have any suggestions?

I've given up with PiP the time it takes to swap in the heat of battle on my machine means its not doable. Chances are i need to upgrade my 8800 GTS as its a little old now and it might work ok but i cant afford to take that chance at the moment really. Well, i can, but im not going to, just to get PiP working. I prefer to have 4 x 1024 x 768 screens spread across my 2 x 22" monitors then its simply a case of hovering over a new window and pressing a key to set it as my main. ;x

I investigated it a little more and apparently the problem only occurs between the Number pad 0 key and the number pad decimal key. Pretty odd if you ask me. I guess I'll just find a different set of keys to place those PiP hotkeys on for now.

I have a G15 and my bottom six keys are the five "Focus 1-5" macros like Keyclone added with a "follow focus" macro on the sixth button. I have them mapped to my PiP swap and I also add the following line on whichever becomes the new "main":

/rw TOONNAME is now FOCUS (just on one).

That way when I switch, just two buttons pressed, the focus name pops up in the middle of the screen from the raid warning (after PiP resizing) and off I go.

It takes a lot of getting used to but this is why I use trinity bars. You can write your macros directly into your bar buttons and you aren't limited by blizzards macro system.

TrinityBars = A MB'ers Holy Grail for Macros and Buttons

Will not ever max out in buttons of macros as far as i have been so far, i have yet been able to, the ability to direct edit macros into keys is amazing, but it does take some time to setup and does take some getting use to of course, once you get through your 1 to 3 day break through in using it you will not be able to live without it...for multiboxing... I still use bartender3 for my mains when i solo play my old 70s.

As for my setup i have my follow/focus/assist command setup as my 0 numpad key for whos in focus at that time, but i have 5 keys on my xkeys pro that set the focus for main and each of the my 4 slaves, my old issue is the transition from my main over to a slave pc, is where i have issues since im running my main on pc1 and 4 slaves on pc2, i need to come up with a better way to handle the slaves on the second pc so i can transition better.

Also, check out BindPad. Freaking awesome and gives you more macro slots. It has a seperate window that you can add macros/spells/items to so you dont' have to clutter you action bars with items you don't actually need to see.

My two slaves (hunter and shaman) have like 2 things on their action bars; the rest is stored on BindPad for which I know the hotkeys for.

That's ok you have two options at this point. Do not release and continue to use your main for targets, unless your using shamans and require LOS, then well uhh ask Ellay lol. I'd really like to know how he handles that, as i'm playing shams now.

other option is place 1 toon on another machine, make a macro to switch to a 2nd "main". For cases such as that. Thats basically what I do, the 1.5/2sec delay on my 2nd KCM switch seems forever during PVP, so after you down my 2nd main I use it for targets to kill what I can before I go down.

Another nice option with this is to use party1 instead of focus, and on your "switch toon" button, make them the leader as well. Having the focus free is quite handy for classes with pets/etc.

I really love not having a true "main." It gives me the element of surprise :)

what does the macro look like?

is your targeting the same, except instead of focustarget its party1target ?

I use a combination of using party1 and the following addon (for auto following/following leader): Multiboxer

So, upon hitting F1-F4, I get an immediate switch of PiP, party leader, and the new alts immediately follow the new leader. So far this has proved effective for me, and I actually don't hate collection quests anymore! I can always switch to the next character when one fills up on their items :)

I also fixed Zanthor's Quest Broadcaster and added that into my setup for finishing touches. I'm lazy and try to maximize efficiency hehe...

this was an incredible help, i want to really thank the Op for this one, i have f8-f11 for pip and macros accordingly, and i cant believe how this is going to change my thinking on gathering/collecting quests as well as switching leader when my main goes down.

Because I run mages in my team (and therefore focus is generally being used for CC) I was trying to think of alternatives to this and I *think* there may be an easier way to do this but it hinges on whether there's a / command to set the group leader....

The theory is this - as it is I use /cast [target=party1] Big Spell of Doom in the majority of my macros. This gets the target from whoever is the party leader, so if there was a mechanism to allow you to make another member the party leader from whatever char is the party leader (a promote macro) then there would be no need to use focus for that purpose and none of the existing macros would need to be altered. No need to have /focus Bob, /focus Bob2, etc macros on the alts since the assist unitID (party1) never changes - who party1 is changes...

Anyway, it all still hangs on being able to /set leader Bob2 or whatever - without that it falls apart so if anyone knows if that is possible and how that would terribly helpful ;)

Oh great, now I gotta change everything, AGAIN....

Your explanation is spot on. This is how Ive been doing things since day 1 (well day 1 of me using pip at least), I even go with F8-F12 as you used in your example.

My only suggestion here might be to further discuss what can be done to limit the screen lag when switching? Does anyone have any tips? In something like a big AV battle I would always expect to have some lag as a toon dies and I attempt to avoid tpwn by picking up the next focus in line... but currently I get roughly 5 seconds of freeze/lag/rendering? Is that standard? If I'm questing or in a remote area its near instant.

Q6600, 4gb ram, 8800GT, 2x 500gb 32mb cache drives, vista 32... have wows on seperate cores, 5 installs on 2nd drive, low gfx settings, no sound, etc etc

Just looking for some thoughts, maybe there's a simple tip or setup I'm skipping.

yea, the screen lag really bums me out.. i have found it decreases with resolution and details

i just wish i could get a more 'official' word on what is happening when the screens are swapped

I've noticed that the rendering lag on mine happens because on my main computer I run 4 clients... 1 @ 1024 x 768 on the left of the screen and 3 800 x 600 clients along the right side of my monitor. The only thing I can think of is that the rendering between different aspect ratios could be causing it, but simple math shows that both those aspect ratios are 1.33333/1. So that's not it. Possibly a screen resizing. Also after switching PiP one time, you would think that there would be some way of "remembering" when the client goes from the 800x600 window to the 1024x768 window.

Just some random thoughts out loud. I use 5 separate installs (4 with all low/minimized graphics for MB and 1 at full screen, non windowed, flashy goodness for soloing), so it's not some sort of lag in processing. Could be the 8800GTS I'm using or even the overclocked AMD 5000+ BE processor.

Sweet - that simplifies the process completely then. No need for focus switch macros, just have all /cast [target=player1target] Xxxxxx and have your PiP switch key setup with an in game macro to /promote Bob2 if Bob1 dies, 25 macros become 5 :)

PS found an 'offical' list of macro commands - not sure if others are already suing it or, like me, were just using http://www.wowwiki.com/macro as the main source of macro knowledge ;)

I'm interested to find out how you move your main as you switch from PiP to PiP. I'm assuming you have WASD as your movement keys. So if your main has them set in his keybinds, how do you move your alt1 when you switch to him, and so-on for your other alts 3 through 5? If I switch from my main to my alt and I use the WASD keys to move it moves the original main of course, but not the current main i switched to. How did you work around not having to make a set of WASD keybinds for all your alts and still be able to move as efficient as the first?

i tie ctrl+LBUTTON via the mouse-map to ctrl+= (my '/follow focus' hotkey).. and just ctrl+left click when i'm ready to move. then left+right to drive

when it gets sticky, i have WASDQE available to move all characters at once (QE used most .. strafing == very useful)

Technically, I actually use an n52 nostromo speedpad and use the analog thumbpad to move(just like the ol' nintendo controller) and have that mapped to the arrow keys. It's the same as WASD, but you use your thumb for all four directions, and instead of using "turn" I use strafe for left and right. I turn/rotate view with my mouse, and use the fifth button on my mouse(thumb) as Shift so that I can double my N52 keys by binding them to the F1-12 keys and Shift+F1-12.

I highly suggest the nostromo thumbpad movement for those that are willing to adapt, it takes some time.

Would there happen to be a way to pass keys to the clones, but block those keys from being executed on the Main PiP? Say I wanted to add a couple keys to turn my alts left and right, but I don't want this done on the main. I could just hotkey it through WoW interface on the alts, but when I switch through my clones with PiP I'd have a problem.

It would be kind of like black-list do not pass, but work for all background windows and exclude the main. If you have any solutions, I'd be grateful.

Well, I don't have a set main character. I alternate through PiP so often that any of my characters could be in the main position at any given time.

When casting at a moving target, I use mouse turning to stay aimed in the right direction on my current main window. I don't like to have to drop my cast in order to turn my other guys, so if there were a "lime green list" I could continue my cast and turn my 4 clones at the same time to make sure everyone faces the target and blows the s**t out of them :). Right now I'm using turn on all of my guys, and it forces my main to turn as well, so I have to turn him back with my mouse fast enough before the cast goes off, which can make you pretty dizzy and disoriented tbqb :(.

I hope i explained that clearly.

I'm just a newbie, but I'd also like to see this functionality. I'm multi-instancing two feral druids, and it would be very nice to be able to control the positioning of the clone(s) independent of my main. Ideally I'd like to be able to control my clone with the arrow keys and control my main character with WSAD.

It would be kind of like black-list do not pass, but work for all background windows and exclude the main. If you have any solutions, I'd be grateful.

Just a thought, but would it be easier to just have a per account black list? Maybe tied to the startup command ID so it knows what window to send too?
I'm thinking that if it's useful for one situation, it might be useful to be able to pass keys to all windows but slave3, for example.

Well, I don't have a set main character. I alternate through PiP so often that any of my characters could be in the main position at any given time.
