So if I was adding a single monk to a team, would a tank or a healer be a better fit or are they lackluster for boxing in either role?

So if I was adding a single monk to a team, would a tank or a healer be a better fit or are they lackluster for boxing in either role?
I like single boxing a monk healer, really haven't made any attempt to box a dungeon with it though. I've heard if some boxers having success with tanks, but they ain't talking.
Oh forgot to mention my monks are 90 now.
Haha, i didn't say that as bragging. I just threw it in there as reference to experience.
I have 5 monks.
1 tank
3 dps
1 healer
Run them mostly in dungeons and don't remember dying in a while. It is a really awesome team so far. Will be forever until I get them leveled, though.
Ya know, some of you that have some trouble with tank/3dps/healer might try tank/2dps/2healer. I did that in some of the harder heroics on my 5x druid team during WotLK and it was enough extra healing to get me through the tough spots but still enough DPS to make things not take half a year to die.
[edit] Also, thanks to the contributors to the thread. I'm leveling my DKs at the moment but this will help a lot when I start the monk team. ;) http://www.l00py.net/images/smilies/beer.gif
My monks are 85 and waiting.. I'm going to do a mix of questing and dungeons. I know of one person who clears heroics with 5 tank spec monks, but have not heard from him in awhile. Would have loved for him to share his tactics/macros etc..
How boxable are the 3 types of monks? I've read through some of the macros here, I'll admit I'm not totally certain how the Monk Healing works, but have run Disc Priests and Holy Paladins as boxed healers in 5 man quite a bit. How do they compare? Also is the dps version rogue/cat - like, in terms of being difficult to macro? I'm starting a new team from level one, 2 of the 5 will be hunters, but thinking of filling in the other three spots with Monks, but from what little I've read the Healer/Rogue versions might be tricky? Hoping someone could confirm or more likely debunk my uneducated observations.
Thanks.
Not sure about 90th, but during the level up process it looked like 5x Healing Monks were pretty invincible.
With 20% of their non-auto attack damage, healing the most damage character within range...
They're healing more than half their total life per second.
I saw a few people streaming their Healer monks.
Haven't seen anything really for Tank or DPS monks.
Three mistweavers will do tons of damage if you have the caster heirlooms (I found levelling mine that I was often 1st or 2nd dps in dungeons until Cata content). I would worry that on a full rotation you'll run oom because the 5.1 patch changes were pretty brutal on mana for everyone, including levelling monks. If you are running with more than one your rotations won't be tricky at all because eminence healing plus smart hotting yourself a few times a minute should be all you need (the hot spreads to the two lowest health targets). I levelled pre 5.1, though, so I'm not sure how nasty the mana nerfs are for levelling, I've heard they are pretty brutal.
If mana gets tight though, you can gate your rotation with glyphed mana teas to slow the mana spending.
The only caster spec of monk is the healer spec, but it does decent damage while levelling (once again if you have heirlooms) and a chunk of that damage translates into healing automatically through eminence and later on even more of it through the buff provided by blackout kicking on a healer. I imagine you wouldn't need to do anything other than a normal dps rotation + a self hot every 20 seconds to keep such a team rolling along. I actually just rolled a gnome monk team (x4 not x5) this week so we'll see how that goes. (my prior monk experience was levelling and raiding a solo box before 5.1).
I was able to quest easily playing 5 healer monks (up to level 82 so far) but did not have luck running them through dungeons all in healer spec. Have not tried as tank/3xdps/heals because of gear.
Personal update: I've been levelling a group of monks with 3x mistweaver + brewmaster + hunter and once you hit 30 the 3x chi wave is invincible. The mistweavers are still competitive with the hunter on dps at this point (disclaimer: my hunter is the only toon not using an heirloom weapon, so that could be skewing those results).
Levelling 4 step:
The following are my 4 step macros for mistweaver. My toons do not yet have renewing mists:
1: (I do this at focus so that my toons won't be randomly pulling things with chi wave if they have chi left over at the end of combat. Focus is always the tank). Best chi dump
2: (cheapest chi generator)Code:!if (character in "Monk Mist") /cast [@focus] Chi Wave
3: (other chi dump)Code:!if (character in "Monk Mist") /cast Expel Harm
4: (no cooldown fall through chi generator)Code:!if (character in "Monk Mist") /cast Blackout Kick
Brewmaster:Code:!if (character in "Monk Mist") /cast Jab
1: (highest priority chi generators, 8 and 15 second cds respectively, expel only does damage if I've taken harm so I pushed it so it won't occur until 9 seconds into the rotation rather than 1)
2 (important chi dump, guard is on 30sec cd)Code:!if (character in "Monk Brew") /castsequence reset=combat Keg Smash, Keg Smash, Expel Harm
3 (chi dump)Code:!if (character in "Monk Brew") /castsequence reset=target Tiger Palm, Guard, null
4: (no cd chi generator)Code:!if (character in "Monk Brew") /castsequence Breath of Fire, Blackout Kick
These will obviously change as I level but the thing to keep in mind with monks is that it is best to keep chi generation and chi usage on separate steps or else your macros can easily hang or waste chi.Code:!if (character in "Monk Brew") /cast Jab
I guess DPSing would still be possible even if oom? Atleast according to tim
Spinning Crane Kick Explanation (watch for 30 seconds)
Spinning Crane Kick wowhead
Khatovar edit- no one is going to sit through an hour long commercial to figure out one monk ability. It's perfectly acceptable to discuss any program here, but that's just blatant advertising.
aasi888- I explicitly fast forwarded the video for the reader to the exact part he starts talking about it. I fail to see how this is in anyway bad? Could you elaborate a bit?
PS Relinked video.
They haven't been having any mana problems so far but thanks for that link that is an interesting idea with the stance dancing.
So I have 5 level 85 monks which I basically boosted to 85. Now I am thinking do I want to level the whole team or take a tank and healer to level. I am not a big melee player and normally stick with casters for dps. What range does the monk dps class have? Are all their spells close range? I am probably never going to run them in dungeons, most likely dailies etc at 90.
Any input welcome.
I'm waiting for results of the monk buffs coming in 5.2 . mine are all 85 and have finished the starting area JF quests. They are gnomes so was going to use them for some Khat fishing as well. I'm quested out though! Ill prob just grind them until rested exp runs out..rest them up again.
Btw..anyone else have non-panda monks?
Yeah mine are dwarf, kind of wish they were gnome for the lolz.
I am sitting at 4 x 29 and 1 x 30 Mist weaver moonks (the 30 is my gatherer Mining/Herb, so I have to keep getting BOA naked for quest turn ins to stay close). The first scarlet monestary instance with the archers suck. Other than that I think I have only had maybe 5 deaths total from questing/instancing. I retooled some of my macros and my DPS is around 130-200 at nearly level 30. Fun crew, easy to play and in anything but that gimicky SM instance it has been super smooth and cruise control leveling.
PVP has been more of a challenge for me.
Uggh.
What I discovered works great with this instance (and remember you get chi wave at 30 so you might want to just level up first before you try again-instances are 900% easier with chi wave) is to have one toon go down with the arrow shield while the others stand at the back of the room channelling soothing mists on the walker. As soon as you get close enough to pull those healers at the back will get aggro and all the mobs will run back to them.
I also am using gnomes and its also because I wanted to khat-fish. (I got the ironjaw achievement getting them up to the level I needed to fish darkmoon fair waters and then my darkmoon pet soon after arriving, about 1.5-2 hours for both goals).
My team is in their late 40s now so I've added SCK and renewing mists to their rotation.
With spinning crane kick I've finally run into my first mana issues so I modified my setup in the following ways.
On my normal single target spam I added:
to step one. This switches me back into wise serpent if I go back to single target dpsing during the tiger part of my stance dance. if already in the mistweaver stance it does nothing.Code:!if (character in "Monk Mist") /cast [stance:2] Stance of the Wise Serpent
Likewise, I use mousewheel down for my primary hot on all classes, and so I had to adjust that macro from
toCode:/cast [@mouseover] Renewing Mist
Code:/cast [stance:2] Stance of the Wise Serpent; [@mouseover] Renewing Mist
Finally, the macro I use to save some mana during SCK (and the reason for the stance swaps above). This was just my cheap implementation of the idea in the video someone else shared.
The only other adjustment I've made to my four step (shared in earlier post) is that I now cast renewing mist (on myself, which generally then jumps to the tank from the mistweavers) as part of step 2Code:/castsequence reset=5 Spinning Crane Kick, Spinning Crane Kick, Stance of the Fierce Tiger(Stance), Spinning Crane Kick, Spinning Crane Kick, Spinning Crane Kick, Spinning Crane Kick, Stance of the Wise Serpent(Mistweaver Stance)
has becomeCode:/cast expel harm
I lock it between two expel harms so that it will only fire every 30 seconds because RM is a big mana eater.Code:/castsequence expel harm, renewing mist, expel harm
I need to go back through the thread and see the macro. I hit 40 and am still plowing instances as five heals. Princess theadrin gave me alot of issues until I hit around 38-39 then she was easily farmable. I kepted doing random dungeon and got her fix times or so in a row so I would do every boss but her (gave her one try) and if I wiped I just requeued. Chi wave did make everything super easy at 30 and I don't think all five of mine bounce around. But no biggie. I am waiting for spinning crane kick... I promise you won't hear me saying "Spin to Win!!!" ... I have tried AB 2-3 times but my DPS sucks in there so hard and with 1/3 of the BG with just my toons it wasn't fair to the team I dropped. I am waiting for AV to open because then I think five healers with spinning crane kick will be easy sauce.
I have to admit blizzard made melee heals fun with this class.
No activity in this thread since 1/22/13 - but as a long time lurking need some help.
I am running a 5x Monk set up 1xBrew/4x Mist just hit 46 - Spin to win... right?
However, I can't seem to get it figured out right. Spinning Crane Kick by itself isn't doing the damage necessary to kill elites, what are people using to chi dump?
Any refined macro's would be appreciated.
Try my macros from early in the thread, although you'll want to modify for less chi wave now that they've given it a timer. chi dump with blackout kick
*Also for 5.2 *armoury link for talents etc
http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/kilrogg/Shaddòw/advanced
At level 89 now, these are my final windwalker macros..will take "invoke xeun, the white tiger" as the last one to add..
Will work for single player or multiboxed..
This macro i have on my middle mouse button
*Requires a macro extender ( i use bindpad )
And this is the alternate macro on my F key bindingCode:
/targetenemy [noharm]
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,3,chi wave
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,leg sweep
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,jab
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,diffuse magic
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,tiger palm
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,touch of death
/castrandom blackout kick,leg sweep,disable,grapple weapon,rising sun kick,touch of karma,touch of death,blackout kick,storm, earth, and fire
/castrandom rising sun kick,leg sweep,grapple weapon,disable,tiger palm,quaking palm,blackout kick
/cast Energizing Brew
/cast touch of karma
/cast fortifying brew
/cast leg sweep
/cast rising sun kick
/cast expel harm
/cast blackout kick
/startattack
/targetenemy [noharm]
1st Macro builds chi and i spam this as an opener, then spam key F macro...which will favour blackout kick to build back some health, then just spamming both together..like a 2 step macro ish..Code:/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,rising sun kick
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,spinning fire blossom
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,3,4,5,tigereye brew
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,3,touch of karma
/castsequence reset=0.3 blackout kick
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,2,3,spinning crane kick
/castsequence reset=0.3 1,touch of death
/castrandom jab,grapple weapon,leg sweep,rising sun kick,tiger palm,grapple weapon,touch of death,quaking palm,storm, earth, and fire,storm, earth, and fire
/castrandom tiger palm,blackout kick,leg sweep,grapple weapon,rising sun kick
/cast fortifying brew
/cast touch of karma
/cast rising sun kick
/cast blackout kick
/cast tiger palm
/cast grapple weapon
/startattack
This also will fire off "spinning fire blossoms"..if there is enough chi,can press expel harm to add 2 instant chi..if no chi is present..
This way you can also "kite",sideway strafe or roll away etc and spam spinning fire blossoms for damage from a distance..
I use fists of fury, paralysis, spinning crane kick, storm, earth, and fire, storm, earth etc on there own keys.situationally when reqiured
works well pve or pvp
:)
Example video..using these macros...not normally a back-peddlar :P..but just showing the spinning fire blossom etc :)

PS..couple of late notes( i was late posting this, way, way past my bedtime)
Why no spinning crane kick? i forgot to add..that if you want to aoe you can either change spinning fire blossom to spinning crane kick..or have a third macro that just replaces spinning fire blossom...
Randomly..really do like the monk, rolling about is cool, flying serpent kick useful, love the effect on the paralysis spell
Expecting one day to see they nerf fists of fury,i know its a monk thing, but as it cant be trinketed etc..
I know from experience, you stand there( ala stunned locked like from a rogue) and hope you have enough health to survive :P
Wish we converted to mail at say a higher level, still feel a bit squishy..in leather..but its ok..
I forgot to set recount when i recorded this..oops..
Only wearing blues and greens,no gemmed or enchanted..apart from the weapons..waiting until im 90 to spend my gold on enchants, gems etc :P
any questions.ask here or pm me
Random over :)
Another video here showing how it normally works..nice spot this too to grind..small monkeys spawn back quick..theres 1 big monkey with 1.44 m hp..but hes ok this area is in kun lai summit..not far from the kota base camp
with guild banner up and some rested..small monkeys were 80 k exp..big monkey 200 k
this is the video..

I'm so shocked you were able to find that rare elite up with no one camping it... that dude is dead within 10 secs every time he spawns on my realm.
Yes hehe multiblocks..he does get camped quite a bit like you say..i'm on kilrogg it is quite a quiet server realm..i've recently been camping the tide hunter guy, after the trinket that lets you breathe under water blah blah, but mainly because of the 10 min invis it gives you for pvp..doesnt persist through death..getting lots of cloaks etc no trinket yet :P..hes 4 mil health and a fun battle..cough..as long as i can paralysis the torrent spell can survive and solo him :)
edit
Sahn Tide hunter has a small chance to drop "Aqua jewel. This item will allow you to breathe underwater for 10 minutes and increase your swim speed by 50%. This isn't all this item does though - while under it's effects your character will become practically invisible (similar to a hunter's camoflage. Your mounts will also take on the effect, and it will not break in combat.
can find him here, great site for rares etc..
http://wowrarespawns.blogspot.co.uk/...nal%20Blossoms
scroll down..i used this alot on my hunters for the pets etc
I had the aqua jewel on 3 toons, but I don't pvp so did not make use of the camouflage. With the swim speed buff its just not useful for PvE/dailies until I get one on every toon.
yes agreed its like having an enchant or gear or mount that makes some of your toons run faster etc :P and the others running behind out of breath :) lose "follow" ( cough, touchy subject) and have to go round them up..but i know what you mean :)
I tried get it all yesterday still no luck..camped right by it and it got tapped a few times, before i noticed,as i was playing on my other toons..has about an hour spawn time so not too bad..
Slight necro-threading here. /apologies
I had been grinding as 5 x mist weaver but Stratholme taught me that was bad. I kicked one of my toons over to Brewmaster and everything became easier. From a melee healing perspective the auto-attacks make it too easy to heal + chi wave + expel harm has had my team steam rolling along. I do from time to time hit SCK x 4 to top myself off but have been having no issues.
On a different note I am currently using mostly cloth caster BOA gear + staff, is there a better way to generate more damage? Should I mix in leather agility pieces or just keep going with cloth/leather caster gear?
Well for your brewmaster you probably don't want to be using cloth gear anymore, but mistweavers get nothing from agility so keep them in caster gear.
Unfortunately they are the only ones I moved over on my toon when I transferred from Magtheridon to Kil'Jaeden to have an alliance boxing team with Legion of Boom. But all my other pieces besides head, chest, back, legs are leather.
Why isn't everyone doing enhance shamans after seeing kruschpak one shotting stuff?
Those are some awesome Xmogs. I guess I need to do something like that for my tankadins.
Im thinking 5 mistweavers. Might not be great dps but u can set the macro and just spam flying serpent kick you wont ever die and can grab tons and tons of mobs at once.
