A plea to all newcomers

I just want to say I'm also a new 'boxer - running a 2 toon rogue/druid combo. I'd been running 2 instances on one machine using KeyClone to broadcast, and it was decent, but my machine didn't really like the extra overhead of 2 wow instances running. (I prefer to play @ 60+fps instead of 25-30, ;) ) - anyway, if any other new 'boxers out there are using more than one comp and need some setup help, I *highly* recommend Octopus and reading Ughmahedhurtz' tutorial on it -- it's amazing, and after a couple hours of frustration with keyClone/Synergy combos, I was up and running with Octopus.

Freaking amazing how well it works!!

This community has been a lot of help/information over the last few days -- thanks to everyone (especially Ugh).

Well i had my first problem...and it has taken me a day to find the answer.....read many post....typed in lots of combinations...and finally got what i was looking for....cheers so much for all the info. I had a problem with the username not coming up...and yes you guessed it.....i was clicking the wrong launcher.....DOH!.

I run 4 mage's on Nagrand...and have been banned 3 times for getting too involved in arguements with the unknown...the idiots...and the name callers. So I learnt my lesson...as my mum used to say...."If your going to play with the other children...be nice"......lol

...for what it's worth, the only people this sort of post seems to address with any meaningful weight are people like me, who took the time to follow Google link after Google link, sift through a multitude of tutorials only to find that either they do not address the most basic of definitions for the noobiest of noobs(is KM the same thing as KVM? Do I really want to broadcast on my main window as well as my alts when I'm using a toggle to broadcast? Do I want to broadcast or maximize; is the independent mouse action faster than the key broadcasting?) or they are software-specific (a Keyclone tutorial has minimal bearing on an Octopus setup).

There's a wealth of great information on this site, and it's really the only site I've relied upon when learning how to dual box (I just recently became a 'boxer), but I shudder to do the research to find out if I can easily maneuver between Octopus profiles for 2 PCs and 1 PC, which I will need to do prior to tomorrow at midnight because my second PC does not have a DVD player and I know how long it'll take to install my game's expansion via a networked DVD. But the info will not be in one easily found place--say, a post entitled "Swapping 2-PC/1-PC Configs in Octopus via Profiles" as an example--and I will have to sort much chaff to find the grains of gold.

In summation, as much as you all feel abused, your answers and patience are appreciated. Now, is there any way of showing some love for the unsung noob lurkers who try our hardest not to add to the weight on your weary shoulders? :huh:

quick 2 cents from me - brand new to the world of boxing, keyclone instructions were dead easy, have started to experiment on macros and there's a huge amount of information which I will be trying out once my wife give me 5 mins...

oh and Katannah I know your post is ages old, but for anyone else with this problem and who doesn't know it, you can just copy and paste the wow folder to another location without having to reinstall it - might save you a day or 7 ;)

The "Guides" link is to a Wiki page about Vyndree's Guide to Guides. The Wiki links are to sub-sections in Vyndree's guide which I suppose got broken over time and I suppose the Wiki should be updated. You still get access to all those links by just going to the "Vyndree's Guide to Guides" link on the Wiki page and scrolling down.

They've been working on converting the Wiki, so old post links are probably broken in a lot of places. Like thinus says, going directly to the Wiki will get you to the right places while things are in limbo.

I think he is likely refering to some of the vboxing.net links that are outdated and need to be redirected to the weboxing URL now. Some have redirects some do not... usually the v-boxing ones are the ones that are broken.

This is my second post on here (I think)...

I would like to say that it's a good post to see...

But after mucking about originally with dual-boxing, then tri-boxing and now moving right up to 5 man team, I am slowly working out the macro's keybindings thing myself, but for someone who wants to just jump straight in there and kill everything in site they will find the more technical side of things a bit of an issue.

They will expect to search for a particular macro and find it straight away and be able to cut and paste it into their macro windows and run out and play.

They expect there to be a full help guide if needs be that will hold their hands all the way through the long process of setting up their teams.

In the end, it's a constant learning process for all involved, and I think that also includes the more experienced boxers, and if someone expects to get a golden ticket to loads of awesome and win on their very first visit, they will end up going away disappointed...

But hopefully they will realise that it is a lot of hard work getting everything setup and that in the end... all that hard work is well worth it.

It doesn't help that a certain person who's banned here, who sells a multiboxing app, runs around telling everyone how easy it all is, and makes grandiose claims of how everything they (a new MBer) will need will be on their forums...and that place is a ghost town, so yeah, some of them probably come here looking for help.

A small amount of people put a ton of work into blogs and websites breaking every aspect of the game down, so most players just plug and play their whole way to end game. That attitude will not work with MBing. I am not disputing that you should learn all about the thing that you are trying to do and I personally feel that this site is an awesome resource for someone like myself who dabbled in dual-boxing before moving up to a 5 man team. The beginner guides are just that... a guide to get you started on the path, where you go after them is entirely upto you.

And personally, I love going to elitistjerks.com as it helped me with my hunter's dps rotation no end... still isnt the greatest in the world, but hit over 4k dps with a mid-game geared BM hunter :) I have always loved doing the research into making my toons better... be it going to sites like wow-heroes.com or be.imba.hu or maxdps.com to work out how to get better.

There are plenty of basic guides out there, which will get you started.
But really, all they're doing is opening the door.
You still need to walk through it.

You come to a path.
As you walk down the path, there are various forks.
Each fork is a different way to do things.
Depending on the challenge of what you want something to do, and your solution to getting it to work.

Some things one player will want to do, but another player does not need that functionality in their set up.
Chances are, if there are three boxers with one issue, there will be three solutions.
Something really cool about this site, most people who find something neat post it here for others benefits.
That helps the community as a whole, which is a very nice bonus.

If people are willing to put in some effort and search for an answer themselves, they generally get much better responses then asking for everyone to do everything for them.

I agree however I have been reading Dual-Boxer for some time now and the first time I try to relpy to a post it says I am blocked. Now I have to make up 5 comments or questions I had no intention of botherinig you with before I can make the reply to the post i was intending to. i think this makes number 5 so I think its all good now.

I've spent some time but I haven't really found any clues to my question: Should I Multibox? (probably not more than dual)

Here's what I am thinking of doing: Leveling 2 characters simultaneously from 80-85. My main is a Disc/Holy Priest but I'm pretty sure I'll level as Shadow. I have a second Priest that is almost identical. It is a long story how I ended up with 2 Priests but it has worked out well to have a second set of raid IDs. I also have an 80 Warrior that was my main back in BC. I'm really only practiced playing Protection. And I have a 80 DK that I could run.

My first preference would be to use the second Priest. However, if using either the Warrior or DK would speed up the leveling then that would be a big consideration. I would imagine running 2 identical Priests would be the easiest combo in terms of ease of multiboxing as well as speed.

I have the computer hardware to easily handle dual boxing. I have never tried it however. I run multiple accounts sometimes by alt tabbing (I imagine that made some people cringe) but that is obviously not the same.

So what it boils down to is:

1. Can you level 2 toons at once by multiboxing faster than you could level 1 toon running solo?
2. If not, how much extra time would it take? 10% longer? 50% longer?
3. With Cataclysm approaching in about 6 weeks, do I have enough time to learn to dual box efficiently enough to be able to meet the answers to 1 and 2? Again I am assuming running 2 identical Priests would have a big impact on this.

Q: Should you Multibox?
A: If you think it might be a fun option...


1. Two toons will not level faster then one toon. It will be faster to level two toons together, then to level one after the other, because you get shared credit for kills and some collections, but most collections are one toon and then the other toon. And doing collections twice, is definitely slower then doing them once. Similarly, doing kills (or collections where everything drops once, ie both toons level together) is faster then doing them once with one toon, and then another time with a second toon.

2. Not sure in terms of percentage. Kill quests and collections where everyone gets to loot, is a bit faster for two toons then one, as respawn time is tied to the number of toons in an area, so respawns will be quicker. Also, you kill quite a bit faster with two then with one. And with Assist the Active Toon (with the Follower/Slave) combined with Interact With Target, the slave looting is not much of a slow-down. But collections where only one toon gets to loot, will take twice as long.

3. Boxing is pretty basic, at its simplest. You'll have some method for the slave to follow the master/lead toon. And some method for them to cast at the active toon's target. Not that hard to learn in a day or two. Depending how complex you want things to be, it can take a quite a bit longer to have your software/macros tweaked. Two of the same, is marginally easier then two different classes, for PvE play; for PvP play, the more androgynous the set up, the closer you'll be able to play at close to optimal levels.

TYVM! Thats exactly what I needed to know. I think I will solo level my main since I want to hit 85 and the new raids ASAP. I may dual box the next two toons to 85 though. I won't be in such a rush so it should be fun.

Have one focus key for each member of your team.

If you are three boxing, every toon will have three focus macros.

Every toon will Focus Toon A, on the same keybind.
Something like:
/Focus [Target=ToonA]

Do the same, so everyone can focus any toon.
And so that everyone has the same toon focused, on the same keybind.

Put your focus macro (warcraft macro) on the same keybind as your software uses for window swaps.



Then your follow will be:
/Follow [Target=Focus]

DPS will be:
/Cast [Target=FocusTarget] Whatever
/Castsequence [Target=FocusTarget] First, Second, Third, Fourth, Etc

Heals can be:
/Cast [Help,Target=FocusTarget][Help,Target=FocusTargetTarget] HealingSpell

You can abbreviate Target= with @ in a macro.
[Target=FocusTarget] is the same as [@FocusTarget]
Capitalization is optional, and in the examples purely for readability.



I'd recommend IS Boxer, for boxing.
It does all the assist stuff for you.
