Paypal does a temporary authorization for the amount of approx 1.00 to verify that the card is legitimate and has available room before charging the full amount.
Blizz does it for character trans and name changes.
If you buy gas at the pump they put a hold on a larger amount as well.
Its great working for a credit card company :P
I've always heard that the credit hold when getting gas was $50. I confirmed it recently when the pump slowed to a crawl and stopped before the tank was full.. at $50.00. :(
The Shell station near my house holds $75. If you get 20 in gas (way back when 20 bucks would actually give you ~15 gal.) then you would have to wait 5 business days to get the $55 back on your account.
Pretty lame.
