If you leveled up 5 hunters at a time in instances, there's nothing that says you can't have a 2xSomething+3xHunter Heroic team and a 5xHunter BG team. :)
My last piece of advice is:
Be careful about calling your 5x Multibox group your "side project". They have a way of turning into your primary play focus FAST.
I agree with fact that hunter pets will not be able to tank heroics, same for lock pets. I f want heroics and 5 man all same then Shammy it is.
One should be able to aggro-ping-pong pretty good with hunters. I mean with a clever combination of distracting shots and feign death - combined with slowing effects (concussive shot, frost trap, etc.) you should be able to "kite" a mob between the hunters and/or their pets. I guess something like that would require some practise...

A fair amount of Heroic trash is immune to hunter CC as well, be it scattershot/freeze/frosttraps, conc shot etc. Pets can tank okay up till outlands but even the lv70 mobs can tear 'em up, I don't wanna imagine multiple trash mobs let alone a boss beating on them, even rotated they'd go down quick. My 21/40/0 Hunter's Boar is decked out in sta/armor talents and while he can take a little beating he ain't no instance tank post-bc(though he DID offtank things in aq20 quite well, and a guildie's full-BM boar pre-bc MAIN tanked Onyxia without any deaths lol)
The whole idea with the single class concept boylston, was so i didnt have to micro so much co-ordinating 5 different classes. While im confident in my skills and knowledge as a player to be able to do it, if i did get a 'whim' to go into the BG, i'd want to be able to own some people up and have a bit of fun.
pet tanking every normal instance in the game is completely viable, with some testing with my own hunter, but i sort've wanted some badges. I suppose with effort, planning and some careful aggro ping pongs, i could possibly do heroics. But in the same sense, i could solo most of those heroics with identical methods ;/
Didnt know moonkin aura doesnt stack anymore. Used to back when i was moonkin, but that was just as they changed the talents, yonks ago.
ATM WoW is very boring for me. I've done everything, i have at least 1 70 of every class... done do death. However multi-boxing fascinated me, and not until recently has it become financially stable enough for me to invest in it. I suppose if in time, i get more adventurous, i might 10 box stuff myself... 9 shamans and a pally kara ;P
But ultimately i wanted to do something fun, but i wanted to see it through. My goal was to solo some heroics using a single class makeup. Most of the multiboxers you see do use multi class setups, usually because a healer is absolutely neccessary in most cases, but i just want to see if i cant out play the game and not need one. If i really wanted to do heroics that badly, i'd have a 4 shaman 1 pally team, or druids/pally, something like that. What can kill a pally with 4 rolling life blooms?
I will try out a 5 shaman setup with the explicit goal of downing at least 1 heroic. Then i may venture into other interesting venues... 5 shadow priests pvp lol. 10 dots, ve*5.
