PvE you would be fine.
I am talking primarily PvP is where you OOM so fast. VT is pretty useless in PvP its too short a duration and has a casting time. Your target also dies so fast you dont get enough time to enjoy the mana regen.
VT is designed for boss fights.

yep slats aint lieing about VT being a PVE talent, i still think that its worth takeing tho if you consider the options VT is the most apealing.
It will stack just like VE stacks
have one spec'd like
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bxMrzIMZZVMGdMuRotyo
for improved PWF, and Misery
and the other 4 like
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bx0GkIMZZVMGdMpRrtxo
not a massive difference, but saves you 7 talent points that are really only needed by one priest.
i think that silence is worth takeing on all targets its 3 talent points (where else are you going to put these talents? improved mindblast? waste imo) yes but its on a 45 second cooldown, so haveing it on at least 3 in my opion is a good idea, sufferes DR but would shut a oposeing healer down nicely.
I think mind flay is very conditonal in arena, most shadow priest videos ive seen never use it, might be because mana drain is more important, or that a big blue ray shooting out of you screams counter spell me !!
well timed shadow word deaths and mind blast should be what you want, and wtf spam shadow word death, as long as you have everyones VE up the incomming heal is going to be higher than the damage you take from it anyway (might not be if it kills them, im not sure if everyone would get immunity to it or just one person, you would have to try this out).
mana burn doesnt scale with gear, not the mana burnt or the damage done (as the damage done is a ratio of the mana burnt, ie if they have no mana spell does no damage)
as for thinking that being in pve gear will give you an edge, your dreaming mate, if your going to be a dps man thats cool for pve i can totally understand why your guild would want you doing this, but for pvp get pvp stats, or your going to get steamrolled i would love to meet a group of shadow priests with no resilence and low stamina. so would any melee team, think how bad any pvp spec'd rogue with armor reduction probably reduceing your priest armor to nothing, cloak of shadows just going beserk blowing all cooldowns like blade flurry, your going to be in serious problems, and that was just one rogue, could be a hunter removeing your buffs, and an ms warrior reduceing your VE intake.
PVP gear is for pvp, pve gear is for pve, their are a few exceptions, but i wouldnt go my goals are pvp and im going to get all my gear from pve, if it was the best its what the top teams would use.
If your worried about mana go draenei priests with spellsurge enchant,
symbol of hope is 999 mana per priest every 5 minutes, it doesnt stack so just use them one after another.
spellsurge works out at 50mp5 for every priest when on all 5 priests weapons.
so thats
basically (999 / (60/5)) + 50 = 133.25 mp5 for every member of your group.
your going to want to get 3 pars dps 2 parts healing of the arena healing to get 2 35 resilence bonus, gives you another 23 mp5 (if you get the legs and chest from the healing set)
going the healing rings rather than the dps ones nets you another 11 mp5, healing pvp neck 6mp5, healing pvp cloak, 6mp5, 3 times royal nightseye gems in the red slots of your gear, another 6mp5, chest 6mp5 enchant, bracer ........ infact just look here much easyer if i do it all here
http://www.chardev.org/?profile=14852
thats 81mp5 from pvp gear not bad, you could swap and change this as you please but thats pretty much
214mp5 per priestz
the spirt form pve gear couldnt ever get this kind of effect, not to mension spirt is subject to the 4 second rule ie pointless in pvp as your going to want to be casting all the time. And in battle grounds drink every couple fights everyone has to do this, or die which is cheaper :p
last thing if your going to do any pve you need shadow affinity talent

5 dots and a MD->SWD combo will be devastating to anyone in pvp as much as shaman almost. Sounds like a fun combo
-
It is extremely devastating.
I actually found I never had time to mana burn unless I felt like being an asshole and having a laugh at people. At 70, Mana Burn will take half a fully geared Season2/3 pally/priests mana in one cast round of it, two and there pretty much about out of mana.
With two rounds of it, most people are at about half health. In that 4 seconds I could have probably killed them.
Actually if taking SW:D damage bothers you - just make sure Prayer Of Mending is up, the damage you take will proc prayer of mending and make it bounce all over your party - and if a mage jumps in the middle of you and aoe's everyones prayer of mending procs and goes crazy and mage is OOM and your on full health.
My biggest issues are:
Need massive amounts of water, goes OOM very fast.
Zero AOE capability, when 3 melee get in your face, AoE Fear isn't always the answer - sometimes single target DPS is not enough.
Chain Lightening shits all over our nukes as they hit 3 targets can be garuanteed to crit etc.
Its a very viable team and looks sexy as hell, but just be aware of these limitations. VE is awesome, VT is extremely situational and not viable in PvP at all.

Anyone coming up with any useful tricks with multiboxing priests?
I have a castsequence that does prayer of mending, inner focus, shadowform for a quick "the shit is about to hit the fan" moments.
Other than that a simple target self/flash heal button for all 5.
I think healing is my weakest point, especially on my main who gets the focus of the damage by far. Being all shadow I only reluctantly give up the shadowform mid-fight, but I will when I need to. Of course, losing the main means I give up mobility, not necessarily damage, but it makes things tougher. I tend to heal up and/or rez more after fights than during.
-
personally, i've went with the 1 paladin + 4 priest for PVE and so far I have stayed all shadow...
Judgement of the Crusader is so sweet....
Also healing by just dropping 4 renews is nice as well :)

You can make it work awesome in PvP also. :) Its not as bread and butter (cookie cutter I dunno what phrase to use).
If your Pally is Retribution, you have 6 second sleep, 6 second stun for people healing your priests DPS target. Also if Warrior/Rogue gets in your face you can bash them. Paladins put out nice burst DPS but only every 10-15 seconds or so, so you time your DPS right and its very very effective.
4 Renews is amazing, and later on Prayer of Mending is awesome. :)
Another reason I like pally as main, is people FF the target closest. So I bubble at the last second and let them waste all their big cooldowns on me. Works well.
