Names and Positioning to your advantage in PVP. (My Thoughts)
Hello everybody, I just wanted to give some information, most of which
a lot of you have already found out about. This mainly aimed towards
the new people who want to try multiboxing with the main purpose being
PVP. I love WoW, but I'm just not a fan of PvE. Solo'ing instances ,
leveling, and the like have never really appealed to me, but the solo
focus attacking/casting in PVP does. If you are like me, you might
think this stuff is useful, because I have.
Names:
With names, you'll probably notice something about a lot of the MB'ers here
on the forum when it comes to the selection of their player names. Some
choose the method of similar names with different letters, same names
using uncommon characters, and different names for each character.
For example of similar names with different letters:
Xtoon
Atoon
Btoon
Ctoon
Dtoon
The
first letter in each name is different. This is very helpful in
creating macro's, and really testing out multiboxing if you are new.
These names were similar to mine when I first started - but I was
always seeming to be targeted directly by the other team, and would
have to switch mains.
for characters with different names:
AdamSandler
ChrisFarley
NickSwordson
DavidSpade
WillFerrell
This
would probably be great for PVE, and it looks cool in my opinon with
each character actually having a name that doesn't say "Look, I'm a
multiboxer."
for characters with similar names using uncommon characters:
xtoOn
xtoÓn
xtoÔn
xtoÕn
xtoÖn
You
will notice the second "O" in each name is different. This may even be
considered an exploit in the future as you have a great advantage, but
I am unaware of this actually being considered an exploit by blizzard
at the time I wrote this. From what I've read, and spoken to a GM
about, is that this is allowed. Though, this is what I ended up using,
at least for the time being. Whats the advantage?
Well, when you
are in a BG's with your five characters (or less), theres a saying that
goes "Kill the main, the rest will die" - and its true in most cases. A
lot of people don't have themselves set up to pass /assist to another
character and set another non-dead character as main. So, once your
spotted by the other team as a multiboxer, the other team will quickly
try to identify who the main is and kill them. So, if someone on the
other team says "Kill Xtoon!" - theres going to be 5 of them to choose
from, because they probably aren't going to spend the time to use the
specific character for "O" that your main is using. This leads me to my
next tip: positioning.
A LOT of people choose to put their main in the middle when using positioning/formation. Probably because its the easiest.
Most peoples 5-man positioning looks like this: (Your main is the letter "O")

No
matter what, it looks pretty cool, and probably pretty weird to the
other team. But, the placement of your main also helps to identify who
is the main to your enemy, as most of the time, the main is in the
center.
I have had a LOT of success with using the formation of:
-----O------
-----XX---- (All four are grouped very closely with /follow on my main)
------------
I
then cancel /follow, and then step backwards on my main so they become
one large cluster of characters, and then I use a macro that does two
things: Puts /follow on each infront of them on my list (this is the
macro people use to make a "train" of alts), and makes one slave strafe
to the left of me, and then the other three strafe to the right of me,
making it look like this:
-X-O-X-X-X
and I think I know
why, people assume whoever is in the center, is my main. I actually use
my 5th toon as my "meat shield" in PVP, and he stays in the center,
right next to me.
Most of the time, they either aim for the center
one and kill him, or a rogue or other melee class will kill the
character on the far left, or far right. Im not sure exactly why
though, its just what I've noticed.
If someone, or a group casts
an AoE in the center of my group, I simply strafe away with two on the
left, and three on the right, and I'm usually out of harms way and
still keep casting at once individual target.
If one dies, I
simply make a quick run back to the GY he is located and have him
rejoin group and then run off, or I keep going until each character
dies, and are all rejoined at the GY.
