Off topic! Guild Wars 2 (not multiboxing) and crafting

Apparently I can't use the forums for GW2 with a free account and my guild website is a bit sluggish with no one raiding so I bring my (very simple) question to you.

Is it worth it to pick up a crafting profession for my first character, or is it like so many games where you are much better off financially if you sell every material you get for your first toon?

I found some handy guides on how to do professions in the game and they look fun, but if it isn't going to be feasible/advisable to spend time on tailoring than I won't.
