24 to 27 upgrade, worth the $90?

Long version: I am currently the (proud?) owner of 2 servicable asus 24s. Alas one of them is the annoying 5 year old model with the ring stand (which requires an act of gymnastics and duct tape to properly elevate and prop). Yesterday morning I said "there's nothing wrong with it but I wouldn't mind if it got broken and I had to replace it". Two hours later (we were re-arranging the office) I knocked over a lamp and managed to break it over my monitor... the good one that doesn't have the moronic stand. So now I have two asus 24s with something slightly wrong with them (one has stupid ring stand that makes it very unstable once I elevate it to ergonomic height, and one has a three inch black scratch and a 2mm white hole near the middle).

TLDR: 24 inch monitors slightly defective, should I replace them with 24s or 27s of this brand:

I'm just not sure that 27 inches is worth an extra $180. Anyone made this switch? If so are you using a 3rd party mount? I'd love to clamp mount my monitors and free up the desk space.


In other hardware news I finally upgraded to windows 7 ultimate so that I can use the extra 16 gb I got for xmas last year, which is great news for my rift team because ram was my chokepoint in that game.

From what I've read, 27" is a bit large for 1080p and you could potentially see image degradation (getting to the point where the image is being stretched out), but I image it's easier to see that when you have a 27" sitting next to a 24". I'm going to assume your old monitors aren't IPS since they would have been pretty expensive back five years ago, but the model(s) you've linked to are IPS -- Which is what makes them a bit more expensive. Regardless of whether you choose to stick with 24" or move up to 27", you're going to see a nice upgrade in image quality and viewing angles if/when you make the move to an IPS panel.

TL;DR - The max monitor size I'd go with for a 1080p resolution is 24", and if I was moving to a 27" panel I'd also bump the resolution up to 1440p, but increasing the resolution is going to require that your hardware work harder -- Assuming you increase the resolution of your game clients while multiboxing.

Back mount stands? You mean, like... monitor arms? If so, then unfortunately I have no tips for that. I have my monitors on arms, and I love them, but they're pretty expensive since they're built like tanks. There are obviously cheaper monitor arms/stands available, but sometimes you can look at the picture of them and wonder if they're going to be able to hold up your monitor(s) for an extended period of time.

I bought the 27" PB278Q at 1440p and aside from having my old video card struggle to keep up with some things at that rez, it's been a great monitor. I have a 26" 1080p Doublesight as my (former primary and now) secondary monitor and it's excellent as well. I wouldn't sweat going up to 26" at 1080p especially if your vision isn't 20/15. (Mine is about 20/20 but I have a big desk and I don't really have any issues with it as it is a good IPS monitor.)
