test Internet speed

When i google testing my speed.. i get a lot of choices. anyone recomend a good "free" and safe way to test my internet speed? Also, have any suggestions on what to check? ( antivirus is not running when i play )

Tonight i was getting a lot of lag and high ping in BF4 multiplayer.. i normally get next to zero lag ( on a tad lower than ultra settings ) with a ping at around 20-40 steady.. tonight it was spiking as high as 300.. and getting lag on any map and any location.
Only thing i have added since last i played was new nvidia drivers today before i played.

I use speedtest.net also. It was the only one I could find last year that could test accurately for my speed, 150mbps. If your connection caps out at 50mbps or lower, speakeasy.net is pretty good.

Running a speed test on your ISP's up/downstream is unlikely to help you solve any issues when connecting to game servers. When you run a test on those sites they usually automatically assign you to the closest node which gives you a nice low ping and a nice fast result, and unless the game servers are hosted at the same data center and use the same backbone provider as your ISP, then those numbers really mean nothing.

IF you run a basic speed test and are getting bad results to a node that's right next door to you, then you might be able to blame your ISP, but what you need to do is to run a trace route on the game servers you're connecting to. Then, and only then, will you find the problem (if one actually exists).

Rarely is the IP address of the game server something that's slapped on the front page of the game's site, which makes running an actual trace route a bit difficult, but through the command prompt and the netstat command you can figure it out.

I don't have all the details for this at my fingertips at the moment, but a quick way to see where traffic jams are happening on the internet (U.S. only I'm guessing) is through the internet health report -- But, you'll still need some knowledge of which backbone provider both you and the game server is using.

Back when I was on Time-Warner cable *shudder* I fought with that kind of thing, plus frequent disconnects. I had better luck on freaking ISDN than I did on cable. In my investigations for that, what I ended up doing was running a ping test constantly to either my DNS or someplace like google or microsoft. Eventually discovered that when I was getting punted offline and game pings were high, I was getting a lot of packet loss.

Basically, what I did to confirm stability of the connection was:

* Ping test to the local gateway
* Ping test to the DNS server(s)
* Ping test to google/game server

When I showed 'em that pings were failing to the gateway (which is the device your modem directly connects to), that was enough to convince them to come out and replace some equipment which largely fixed the problem.

My issues (and I would bet yours as well) had nothing to do with speed and everything to do with packet loss.

I ran a test last night ( the one linked above ) and like Mirai said.. it was to a local hub/server .. and i was getting a 10ping and 55mb download..( thats fast right? hehe ) And i got back on BF4 after resetting my router and pc, just for shits and giggles, and i had zero lag again. I had also been playing during peak hours earlier.. my last session was at 10Pmish.

Thanks for the advice guys, i know better where to look if the lag starts up again..
