On my pc (it's a old one) I had to go down on 40 FPS on full size 1920x1080, but I think it depends very much on the computer you're using.
Also went smoother when i recorded to my SSD instead of my old HDD.
This was recordings for Black Ops though and i wanted as much FPS i could get, not sure if it's really needed for WoW
I would just start with the settings that you use in game. Using whatever program you have, I would cap
the FPS to 30 while recording (if it's an option). This cap will be noticeable while you're playing/recording if
you're used to playing at a solid 45+ FPS. However, by not capping the FPS to a number you're likely to
experience erratic FPS which is harder on the system and the target hard drive that you're recording to. I,
myself, find it to be more annoying to deal with my FPS bouncing around from 30 - 60 as opposed to just
playing with a 30 FPS cap while I'm recording.
Also, any video rendering that will be done will most likely be done at 25, 29.97, or 30 FPS. If you record at
a higher frame rate than what you're going to be rendering at then all those frames are dropped and were
completely useless to begin with.
If you do insist on attempting to record at 60 FPS and also using this for your render output as well, any
time that the game dips below 60FPS will be very noticeable on your final render (if that makes sense).
Likewise, if you can't maintain the 30FPS cap while playing/recording (i.e. You're bouncing around
20-25FPS) this will also be noticeable on a final render at 30FPS.
What I mean by all of this is that, have a frame rate in mind that you're going to use on your final render
and then record in game using the same frame rate for optimal results. I find 60FPS unnecessary while
recording because most (if not all) of the TV that people watch these days is 25-30FPS. While 30FPS in
game looks fairly choppy to those who are used to high frame rates, the final output render will look smooth.
And finally, going back to in-game settings. If you're finding yourself lagging too much then I would
first try turning down video settings one by one to see what is causing you the most problems. Obviously,
your alts (slaves) don't need video settings to be as high as your main so that would be a start as well.
Everybody's system is a little different regardless of specs and you're going to have to find a good recording
comfort zone that is going to work for you.
