Liquidate Assets.... Gold vs. Stock

So looking for other peoples views.

Since i'm unsure what will be the items to horde (pun intended) for Cata, i wanted to get peoples views on whether it is better is liquidate assets or not.

ATM on my server i cant sell epic gems etc for love nor money massive supply little demand, so i have stopped transmuting and cutting them even, this and glyphs where my main gold makers.

So question is do i start to liquidate all my matts stored in the bank. I'd reckon i have about 30k to 40k gold of matts in the bank mostly:

• * Enchant Mats
• * Rep turn in items, classic, BC and WotLK.
• * Leathers, chtin and Scals (WotLK)
• * 300+ various eternals
• * 200+ Frozen orbs / 30+ crusader orbs / 30+ abyss Crystals etc
• * 120 uncut epic gems various.
• * lots of WotLK herbs.
• * 120+ snowfall ink.

that's just a quick run down of the more valuable stuff (on my server anyway)

So should i liquidate and go gold heavy into Cata or stock / keep some specific matts. ATM, its hard to make gold from professions i make 2 to 3 times more per-week farming old world raids. My current gold is 40k so not huge.

What are / would you do?

I believe the gem market is going to get a (short) boost upon the release of 4.0.1. With all the new stats on gear, talents, etc ... many are going to check out new stuff -> thus they need new gems.

For myself I just keep a 'basic' stock of wotlk mats. Since there still will be enough people left who won't upgrade to cata straight away, and thus keep collecting those mats.

Old world mats will stay the same I guess in cata. Though some players might want to level up tradeskills on new toons -> they are going to need those old world mats.

So what I'm planning to do: get rid of most wotlk stuff, gamble a bit on gem market resurrection. Save my old world mats for cata.

It's going to take you a while to move all those mats. If it were me, I'd probably sell at least 1/2 of those over the next few weeks or months. Actually, if it were me I'd sell everything unless I knew I was going to use something.

A lot of people probably have a TON of mats they saved up, and will probably want to dump them before CAT as well. They want to clear out their guild bank or alts to make room etc...

I'd sell it on Friday, Saturday, Sunday mostly, seems like the prices are higher then....

You might get lucky by not selling, and have one or two of the items go up in value, but I think most of the items will go down in value, that's why I wouldn't wait.

This has been the case every major patch and prices rocketed every patch. So i don't expect this patch to be any different.

I'd keep all enchanting mats, gems, rep things and herbs.
- Mill the herbs, get inks, with patch 4.0.1 coming people will suddenly need 100x as much glyphs as normal, so prices should rise. You'll be sure to sell things quite fast, that's for sure.
- especially gems will be more wanted when patch 4.0.1 hits due to mastery and armor pen being removed. focus on red gems i'd say.
- rep items will probably sell when people start getting new chars. Allthough i'm not to sure on that. I don't think prices will drop a lot from what there are now anyways.
- eternals, leathers etc. I'd say lose them asap. That's what i'm doing atm. They keep dropping in price and i wouldn't know why they should rise. You could keep them and hope that prices will rise in half a year, due to very slim supply.

Get auctioneer and it wont take you half the time you think.

It depends on how quickly you want to clear inventory. I would suggest liquidating gems and any finished items. Mats that are used for leveling crafts have a tendency to go up in price once an expansion hits and people stop farming that tier of ore/herbs/leather. It all depends on whether you would have the cash now or later.

I second what Littleburst has said as it is exactly what I am doing.

I am also buying the following:
Cobalt ore (when it is cheap)
Argent tournment pets (when they are under 600g)
Sulfuron Hammer/Thunderfury mats (when they are resonable)
Whelpling pets (when they aren't grossly over priced lol)
Tome of Polymorph: Turtle (whatever the price)
Razzazari raptor pet (wahtever the price)
Titansteel (for chopper production during Cata)
Arctic Fur (as above)

I'm gradually liquidating the items, for gold.

Basically figure, gold will be used to skill up professions.
And whatever else.

Unless there's a lot of inflation or something, it will approximately retain its value, unlike a lot of items.

I'm not psychic, so could be doing the wrong approach.
Pretty sure, we'll be able to use the 425-450 skill ingredients, for 450-475 (or something similar) skilling up.
