what are the 5 empty buttons that appear mid screen with the team display? i can move it, but i cannot figure out how to use it or what it is.

That is for Item usage.
you can set it to display only for the main, or for all, or take it off all together.

Very useful for things you want all your toons to do at once, such as hearthstones or food/water. You can keybind it in the wow interface. It can be moved by shift-clicking it i think, or maybe shift-right clicking. Been a while since I moved it.
I believe It's alt-click. But like you it's been awhile.

So say I drag a healing potion to box #1 on my main, can I set something different for one of the others in the same box? Like mana potions on all the slaves, so when I click box 1, Main hits a healing pot and slaves hit mana?

I use IWT on all my slaves to loot the item, put the item in a slot on my main, it automatically appears in the same slot on all the slaves, then I broadcast a mouse click on that button to bring up the quest window on all toons, and when I hit accept on my main Jamba accepts it on all the toons.
I use it all the time. Equipping my lance for dailies/TotC, useable quest items, opening clams.....That bar gets a hell of a workout on my team.

If you are leveling you can also put in quest rewards you want to equip on all characters, with IS boxer mousebroadcasting click on it and it will equip the item on all toons.
Also interesting to manage trinkets (Alterac Insignia and another one) + it can be used to burn honor tokens :)
I like putting mage food and quest items for dalies in these boxes. And sometimes a hearthstone when it makes sense.
