MIT Graphene Multiplier May Push CPUs to 1,000 GHz

The computer industry is involved in a never-ending quest for the highest possible performance from computer components and other electrical devices. Over the years, there have been many advances that have boosted the computational power of computer systems from increasing the number of transistors to adding multiple processing
cores.

Researchers across the world are hard at work on building microprocessors and other electrical components using a material discovered in 2004 called graphene. A group of researchers at MIT announced on March 19 that new findings made could lead to much faster microprocessors in the future. The new findings could lead to cell phones and other communications equipment that can transmit data much faster than devices available today.

but by the time this goes full mass production you will be playing World of Starcraft and still wont get 60fps on every window :D

I read awhile back that the wave of the future is "optical",. I am not a teach guy but the idea is that they are making all the connections optical ( on a microscopic level ) which has multi-times faster speed and almost zero heat. Ill dig around and see what I can find.

It will be interesting to see how they implement it. Fiber optic microprocessor brings up many technical challenges, at least in my mind.

Yea, but will it run Crys....oh never mind.

Actually all they made was a processor clock(frequency multiplier) that could possibly hit 1000Ghz, so ya its compatible with x86, heh.
