Transmute Questions

My alchemy is now at 350 and I am looking forward to going Transmute. I have a couple questions about it though.

I heard I should go a potion mastery and then change to transmute master once I hit 375. The cost to switch is only 150g and far cheaper than leveling Transmute Mastery, is this correct?

How do you make money in transmute mastery? It seems that the largest price difference between any 2 primal elements that I can transmute is about 10g. So I can make 10g every day just be transmutting earth to XX, but that is all. I can make about 25g if I transmute earthfire diamond after buying all the ingredients.

Is there another way to make money in transmutting or am I doing it just to help make it cheaper to get all teh primals I need for gear?

Correct. For transmute mastery you have to make 4 Primal Mights, which is worth about 500g on our server(in total). Potion mastery is a much cheaper, and quicker(just a quest and some potions, not 4 days of getting mats and transmuting).

I make Primal Mights, it requires:
- 1 primal earth
- 1 primal fire
- 1 primal water
- 1 primal wind
- 1 primal mana

I farm almost all of them with my MB team in the related areas and sometimes just buy a primal water/mana/wind if I don't feel like farming just that 1 item.
The Primal Might is then worth about 110-130g (on my server at least) so that's not very interesting by itself(because that's more or less the same cost as the materials that go in it), except for the fact that you relatively often get 2 or even 3 (or sometimes even more) primals from 1 transmute, which makes you an awesome profit.

Use the primals you get to make Primal Might with transmute mastery, sell Primal Might and then use the profit later to buy the primals you need for your gear. That's what I would do.

I'm currently levelling an extra character and I'm considering to make 2 more Alchemist because of this. Alchemists are one of the easiest classes to level imo.

Transmute spec isn't worth it if you ask me. I have had two transmute spec'd alchemists since the beginning of TBC and I transmute something every day. While transmuting primal mights could be very profitable if it procs but sadly, I think I have had it proc a mere handful of times of the course of a year or so. It truly is pathetic. If I had to do it all over again, I would spec potions for more profit. But just because you don't spec transmute doesn't mean you can't make money transmuting. A good way to make gold is to level alchemy on all of your MB toons and get the Earth to Water transmute recipe from Sporeggar. Primal Earth goes for around 5-7g on my server and primal water goes for 25-30g. Do the math :thumbsup:

Strange ... here it does a proc of 2 items(total) for about 30-40% of the time and after about 7 or 8 transmutes I had my first 3 item proc(total).
If it doesn't proc, you don't really lose money, so it's not a bad thing to do and it costs only a little amount of time (if you don't farm any and just buy all the primals). So the more you can make, the more profit you can get. The only thing i'm worried about is whether there is enough intrest to buy them all.

Did you transmute things recently then? Because the proc rate might have changed in the meanwhile.
Well, maybe I've just been lucky (I did about 10 Primal Mights transmutations, so it's a small amount to create statistics with).

I have myself 3 alchemists at 375 under my payroll, and I can say you the following:

1) Potion Mastery is the easiest of the three masteries to achieve if you have time and lack money. Transmutes if the other way around. When TBC started it was hard to get into either Black Morass (for elixir mastery) or Pot mastery (Botanica) with nice groups at all, so delivering some mats to get it done without any instancing involved sound appealing to me. Now everyone is at seventy and can easily get in, I'd save myself the trouble and go potions like said in previous posts.

2) If you ask me, best possible transmute to do with mastery is not primal might, by miles. On average you'll be paying slightly less for the 5 primals than the gold you'll get auctioning the might. If you are lucky, sure, will pay off; if no procs happen, you'll earn 10-30g depending on server prices for primals. If you want to go cheap, primal earth into water is the cheapest mat wise, and gives highest % returns (up to 5 times the gold invested, asuming a 4-5g price on primal earth). If you want to go higher, earthstorm diamond is your best bet: 2 primal earth, 2 primal water and 9 uncommon gems turned into a 150g metagem, with way better returns for your gold than primal might, even if NOT procs pop. If your team has a Jewelcrafter among your ranks (I strongly recommend you have at least one), prospecting will provide any uncommon gems needed, and you'll be able to cut the metagem into something even more expensive just with rep/trainer recipes. At least is what I normaly do.

3) However, unless you were extremely unlucky and got zero discoveries out of your trade, I suggest you stick with potion mastery or elixirs. Reason is twofold: Sooner of later, you'll get some flask discoveries that PROC with elixir mastery for very nice gold returns; if you are potion master, even without killer recipes, you'll make nice gold amounts out of mana and healing super potions. The second reason is the real deal: the more you craft potions or elixirs, the bigger your chances to see a proc happening. With transmutes, at 20h timer each try, you'll end up having horrible luck weeks with zero procs and lots of resources put to waste.

So, to sum up: if you wanna stick transmute mastery, go metagems over primal might, unless you can lay hand over a cheap suply of primals and/or can offer your transmute services in exchange of mats, trading the already crafter primal mights for mats (and keeping all procs for you later on). If you have money to invest, try getting some big deal recipes like haste or destruction potions and stick to potion mastery (advisable if your team plays on a mature server which has many guild doing end game raiding on Sunwell Plateau). If you want to go secure, get elixirs and craft as many flasks as you can. Trade mats for flasks, and keep crafting. You'll get more and more discoveries till you discover all available flasks, and you'll end up earning some nice gold.

Transmuting is the easiest money that i make. I have 6 alchemists and make about 168g a day just making primal earth in primal water. One of them is a transmute master (the other just got to 70 yesterday and the mounts too, so couldn't do the potion master quest yet). I say about a 4 months ago i was getting a proc every other day. Now it seems like i get a proc once a month if i am lucky, but i am still making the other 5 transmuting masters. The only reason is that i don't really buy pots or even make pots so having a pots master is not worth my while. I think at 350 you can go for the quest, yes you are right you should go do the pots master quest... easiest and cheapest, then pay the 150g and go transmuting. Go switch to trans master at 375 i think that is a waste of time to get the 25 skills in alchemy. I say this is because you get you primal to primal at 350 and they go yellow at 365 (i think) and go green at 375. But the ones that you discover don't go yellow until after 375. Been trans primal to primal for about 3 weeks and got my skill from 350 to 371 just making earth to water.

In short making pots from 350-375 is a waste if you are going to transmute everyday.
