View Full Version : Engineering as a money-maker !?

Something I didn't know. Gas clouds are on a fairly short spawn timer (5-6 minutes) and always spawn in the exact same location. They roam a bit once harvested with the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, but when they respawn it's at the exact same point every time (like almost everything in WoW).
So, given a 6 minute timer and 4 motes on average per collection, you're looking at 4 primals/hour. Shadow goes for ~30g a pop on my server, 120g an hour per account... not too bad. Boring as hell to stand in one spot and wait for a gas cloud to spawn, but it's something you could do with an account you're not actively playing - just bind the mote extractor to all keys, unbind movement and park it at a gas cloud spawn where there's no mobs around. ;)
Gnome Engineers can use the Mote Extractor with a 300 eng skill since they have +15 racial, and it would be possible to say.... summon them up onto the floating platforms in Nagrand where there is a gas spawn but no mobs... now, there is an idea for some alts ! :)

In my opinion the _only_ profession that is a good money maker is the 3 gathering proffs (Mining, Herbing and Skinning) all others cost too much to level and is limited in it's profitability.
I recommend doing the daily’s over anything. Minimum 200g/day per toon for the island quests only.

The Mote Extractor is a great, though often unutilized source of extra gold.
Between when I made it on my Horde paly and when I hit 70, I had about 60 primal waters and 20 or so airs. Sold all the waters for $$$ when s4 hit.

But you can only do this on one account at a time right, since the clouds disappear when harvested. As a boxer, dailies would off a better return of gold for time invested I would think.

Stealthytotally agree on the dailies. For a multiboxer its easy to do 100g within one hour per character if doing the right ones. There is a quite a few guides on which to do on this site.
i am an engineer myself and I know for a fact that they dont spawn at the excact same place and most do move. Just think of them as extra income should you stumble over them.

The mote extractor is one of the most profitable items I have crafted. That thing paid for the gold I spent in engineering and bsmithing on my tank. It also paid for both of my 70's epic flyers and it is now funding my upcoming 5-boxing group. I would recommend this to anyone. Primals in my server go for approx. 30 gold ea. A few fly-bys in SMV and I have 100-200 gold in minutes. Easiest $$ ever!! lol.

I hit 70 almost 3 weeks ago, and im yet to try some dailys. I started Ogrila but got struck with boredom, after the first round of color clicking on each tune.
I tried going to the island, but when i got there, it was like a gankfest (my server is pretty crowded), yet, im still going to try them.
Anyways to the point: Engineering was a pretty gay profession until the gas clouds, and before that, the epic heads. Then it came the rifle for tanks and some hunters, good money making cause of the primal nether.
Gas clouds are a huge profit, but u gotta be patient. The best way to maximize it, is having mining as well. I even dropped down enchanting with almost all formulas available in game (almost made me cry) to put mining, along with engineering. I once made almost 1k gold in one night, from 9pm to 7 am. Is it worth? well if ur low on gold and cant do any quests besides the leveling ones :P

An individual cloud can only be harvested by a single toon, but there are dozens of spawn spots. Plus you only need to be L30 gnome and find a safe spot to hide! :)

No, you place lets say your 5 shammys on 1 gas each, so that you every 6 min can gater 5x. 1 on each...
I like this idea as i have enginerin on my main shammy and ive been woundering if i want it on all of them for some fun in BGs with explosives and goblin rocket luncher.

i dont wanna ruin the dream but:
most clouds are in the ground, and the ones on top of floating islands are like, 5 in nagrand, of which some will spawn too far away to collect, or simply spawn in another place. From what i experienced on the past, some also share spawn points, it not as easy as: camp ur char here, press "x" key every 4 minutes.

There are 30+ different spawns in Zangar alone for Swamp Gas, and only 5 or so are up at any one time. Camping spawns isn't going to work.

This is wrong, I know for a fact because I camped an air cloud in Nagrand just SE of Telaar for over 2 hours last night while I ran AV on another account. :)
It spawned at the exact spot every time after no more than 5 minutes or so -- I ended up with 9 primals.
Also, there are not 30+ spawns in Zangar, they spawn in maybe a dozen locations and then roam around, so if you're looking at a Gatherer map or w/e then it looks like there's more spawns than actually exist.
For example this wowhead map: http://www.wowhead.com/?maps=3518:440460620761690700690570520300500380520 49133143133046028158043077046159048025043047137079 46504992706115604503613006607515508016615005422336 58563
See the 4 points near Ring of Trials, that is from 1 spawn. Same with the 3-4 points south and south-east of Telaar, and the 3-4 points north and west of Garadar.

I was talking about Zangarmarsh. Nagrand you can do it because there are less spawn locations but it will eventually move to a different one (probability FTW). You can't camp spawns in Zang.
Map of Zang: http://www.wowhead.com/?maps=3521:580520650730590350240560160200437533460 58030250460754932930909051028024030021031032032038 03404203815894505606306607508307807908504901602403 30621601530826726844312713347269359270433650685119 45841558480879240262338263160346228148113262118568 7673658866458388520787462198316695580
30+ single spawn locations plus 2 locations that aren't on there but I know for a fact that there are spawns. When I was farming and came across one, I consolidated any nearby ones (within 10 yards or so, they really don't move that far; Cartographer FTW) into that one. That map is pretty damn close to what my map looked like before I had to do a reinstal and I forgot to back up my WTF. :(

As a multiboxer all my professions (and I have all of them) are for fun only. The only ones I've made real money out of are Enchanting and the 3 gathering professions.
I've got them all except for Engineering and Blacksmithing on Shammy #5 at 375/375 now, and I do plan on levelling Engineering. Think I'll drop Blacksmithing for the new LK profession though.
Anyway, I'd agree with others here - with 5 characters, nothing beats dailies - easily making 1500g a day doing a very quick run of dailies (quicker now that I have my 5 epic flyers to).
if you want fast primals just kill elementals...
