So I'm letting my shammies rest up a bit, playing around with my
3mages/war/priest group (62s). Out of curiosity I respecced my mages
all frost (they were all fire as that's suppose to be the PVE
spec).
I have to say that for a boxer a frost spec works really well;
especially with a warrior tank. It is far more forgiving.. especially
on the 5 mobs pulls. Once in a while one of the mobs would
go after my magess.. with frost and the speed slow down I was able to catch them
with my war before they got to the main group. Up to this point I
almost written off the group, now I think I'm actually going to level
them to 70.

Also, with 3 water elementals bosses go down REALLY fast.

:) Great to hear your picking them up again :) am planning on lvling 5 myself ^^ (already got a highish priest)

btw just to give you an even better incentive :) it looks like WotLK will see the rise of deep frost for Raiding :)

With your group of 3 you should be able to sustain an insane critrate on single targets including Bosses (provided they don't change the talents).

This is the Basic Spec ('http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents2.html?tal=00000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000005053203102350100115520105 1'), with a further 20 points to spend wherever you like :)

Don't Rule out This spec ('http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents2.html?tal=00000000000000000000000000000050 23201211300100000000000005053203102350100115520105 0'), added AoE and Slowing but above all 30% refunds on your critical spell hits, which will be very often :)

I always liked Arcane Spec, arcane missiles is awesome, plus the added mana. Actually every spec is nice:

Arcane - mana, spell dmg, arcane power, pom
fire - blastwave is added aoe, pyroblast, ignite
frost - shatter, water elementals, winter chill

hard to choose!

I just hope they don't make mobs frost immune with the whole northrend/cold place.

Even now I'm getting pretty good dps, quite a lot of crits. WIth
3 mages Winter's chill stacks fast and Frostbite procs quiet often..
throw in Shatter and you got a lot of crits. :D

I'll have to play some more and watch the logs closer though.

Yes, you've noticed one of the aspects of frost mages in PVE. :) Frostbite + shatter = awesome. But keep at it and you'll start seeing bosses/mobs that are immune to roots/slows and when that happens, your DPS drops a significant amount and when the shat does hit the fin, you have almost 70% less burst damage to pull out on short notice. It doesn't seem like much but it adds up fast. Granted, once you overgear everything, it makes this decision much less important. :P

Just read something interesting.. DKs tanking spec is frost so making
mobs frost immune would be bad idea if they're suppose to be the new
tanking class. I hope this would be the case. EIther that
or cut out the whole immune thing which is stupid to begin with.
