Now it's 4 shamans and a level 70 mages.
5 man shaman killing Scarlet Monastary elite mob for 200 or so xp, running out of mana and possible wipe versus plugging a 70 mage in there to aoe 15-25 elite mobs for 120-150 xp > 5 shamans.
Clear the entire Cathedral for a buttload of xp in less then 12 minutes > all. Eventually I get to leveling the 5th shaman.

huh with druid and 4 shamans I have cleared at 33 lvl SM library. I had to drink each 5-7 mobs. Dont forget I fought 3+ lvl mobs.
you must be doin' something totally wrong :P

Skipped drinking all together, too much downtime, it's also a question of how long it takes you to clear the same instance.
I can kill elites with 5 shaman group, 1 restor and 4 enhancements and maybe drink once in awhile, but once my mana goes down, the time it takes to kill the mob after elite #4 isn't as good as elite #1. After elite #6, it's just meleeing and shock everyonce in awhile.
On the other hand, 70 mage and 4 shamans could pretty much take out Cathedral in 10-12 minutes flat, multiply that 110-150xp times the entire instance of mobs vs 5-7 mobs then drinking and you're current xp. Since I clear so fast, I have to actually do Armory, then Cathedral, reset, do Cathedral then back to Armory or I would reach my instance cap very fast.
Then at work I can solo grind the 5th shaman since I can't exactly multibox at work.

you spend more time leveling 1 shaman (avg 10 days /played to 70) then 5 shamans all together (avg 15 days /played to 70). I dont think your mage gonna boost you THAT fast so you will have not much less /played on your 4 shamans.
So imo you waste more time with boosting then without

Yes and no. Yes since we factor in the 5th shaman, no when you consider I have a variety of classes I can choose to play for the 5th spot when the shamans hit 70.
Do I choose to take 2x or 3x longer to level and gear 5 shamans up to 70, or do I choose the shorter route, which will ultimately in the end, force me to replace the 5th shaman later?
Factoring in the amount of time I raid, the time I can level and the time I spend playing game at work, it works out for the benefit in my scenario.
There are a few points to make in popping a 70 in a 5 man group.
- Rare wipes
- More xp
- No time wasted in learning curve
- I'm not limited to +/- 2 level because 5 shamans can't hit a red con mob
- Hordes camping nubs don't camp a level 70 mage and 4 healing shamans.
- Instance lewt will be completely gear out for 4 shamans by the time I leave the instance
- I don't need to find water
This is how I leveled group 2, end result, I have 10 level's 70's. 1 toon tier 3 geared, 3 toons kara geared, 6 toons heroic and bojs gear. Hard to prove me wrong when I've done it.
One other thing to note, if and when the 5th shaman hits 58, I can tag mobs and have group of 5 kill the mob for full xp.

well with my dru+4 sham grp I almost never wiped :P
you can easy kill +4 level mobs or higher like at 33 lvl I have killed 37 lvl archmage doan
horde is a problem... no more :P priest+4 warlocks pew pew ?? lvls :) for shamans it isnt that easy tho...
who cares about instance lewt? :P
buy water from vendor, easy as that, dont be cheap, u've got 10 lvl 70s to get golds :P
I am not sure, but if you tag mob but some1 else attacks it you will get reduced hp. iirc it works like in pvp, the more you hit a player, the more honor you get

Hehehehe.
BC xp is twice the xp versus PreBC areas. So 58 is the best time to send nubs over.
If my alt is 58 and hits a red mob for 1hp damage (thereby tagging it), and the other toons that are dpsing can con the exact same mob as green, then alt 58 is going to get full xp after group of 70 kills tagged mob.
Tag with nub, kill with 70's and boom full xp. That means I can run around pull 8 mobs tag/dmg the mob, then 70's can aoe and fat xp. If you guys didn't already know. This is how someone got to level 70 within 24?48 hours of BC release.

I run 4 shammies and a warrior and I just skip drinking unless I'm going up for boss fights and I'm under 50% mana.
I think your problem here is that you don't have a tank - I can pretty much self-sustain my tank with 3 heal streams (4th is mana spring for myself) -- I have to heal once, MAYBE twice on boss fights but trash doesn't need heals at all. That's probably where your mana is going.
Vyndree nailed it on the head.... I run 4 shammis and 1 paladin and haven't had any problems at all. Even at higher levels, I can't imagine having too much difficulty. You're going to need a tank

Rotate the shamans it will go much faster.
I.E Shamans 1-4 + Mage clear SM.
then Shamans 2-5 + Mage clear SM.
then 1, 3-5 + Mage - etc.
overall it will take 6 runs to = 5 runs if you did it without a 70 which in turn is what I think your overall looking for.

Ellay, good idea.
As for the wiping part, it's more a question of how much I want to push to get something done. I wipe more cause I'll take more risks to see if there are more effective means of getting results.
Even now, I'm pushing to see how many elites I can aggro with my mage before I stop grabbing mobs and start aoeing them down for xp. I may die a few times. If however it tells me what my limit is, I know exactly what to expect to get the most done in a short period of time.

What's the XP penalty for having a 70 in the party? I would have though it fairly significant...

Penalty is nothing compared to the amount of xp you generate by killing more mobs in same amount of time.
How long does anormal 5 multiboxer take to clear cathedral? I drink only 3-4 times with 70 mage and clear 15-20 elites in seconds and only use 30% of my mana from each pull.

SM Cathedral 12k xp
SM Armory 8k xp
Both instances cleared in roughly 12-20 minutes depending on goofing off or not. So if a same level group can generate that much xp in same amount of time, then I'm definetely doing something wrong, but I can see it possible with 4 aoers and healer maybe?

Speedy... very speedy. Keep it up.
