View Full Version : A lot changed in a year!

As some of you may remember I took a year off and came back a few weeks ago, also just hit 70 this weekend x5 woohoo.
Anyway, MAN things have changed since Ive been gone. Before (a year ago) a lot of people would think 5 boxing is cool and have some positive things to say. Id get my fair share of OMG HAX, WTF. Now, a lot of people know what it is, and instead of OMG HAX, the most common things I hear during my time is the following.
Hello Virgin show us a trick!
Looser
Basement Dweller
Dude get out more
Etc.
Whats the most surprising is the duration between insults, this weekend the record for longest time gone without some insult being thrown at me is about 15m, with the most common being 5m. Even after soloing a small Crossroad raid clearing them out.
Ive already adjusted to all the new hate. So Im guessing since all the whiners cant do anything about it and blizzard approves of boxing this is the result? Just trying to figure things out.

Weird, I did get some hate while leveling but I haven't gotten any for a long time since I hit 70 (well a few times in BGs, but I don't generally watch BG chat anyway). US-Crushridge/Cyclone is pretty multiboxer friendly.

I was on pretty much all day yesterday and I only got one questionable comment. All the rest was positive or people didn't say anything at all. And it wasn't like I didn't go places where people were. I spent time in Shatt as well as Stormwind. So if anything my experience has gotten better over the last few months.

I think a lot of it has to do with how common multiboxers are now. Many in PvP have been rolled by 5-boxers enough to hate them, and it's only worse that Bliz tells the whiners to STFU about it. Get used to ignoring 90% of the people you run across. I started 5-boxing in January when I joined this site, but I was dual-boxing way back around March/April of '07 and I didn't receive at all as much negative crap for it then.

My nephew is over for the week, so he, my wife and I decided to roll up some orc hunters just to play around with for funzies. We named them all close to the same name, but each of us were only controlling one toon.
We still got the hate... even though we were obviously moving and acting completely indipendently, we were haxors, and bottors...
It was kind of funny to me... my wife has never multi-boxed and she didn't care for the hate.
Some people are just plain ignorant.

I've often wondered what would happen if a team of 5 friends were to do something like this.
I'm not disappointed.

It varies a lot by server I'm assuming. I've got 5x 70's on Blackhand and no one hates on me... I'm also the guild leader of a prominent guild who's always had good relations with most of the server... that may help in it's self.
My guild accepts my hobby, the folks I ran into while leveling most often were cool with it, a few zomghax here and there, but nothing suprising or overly rude...
My favorite to date is the guy who told me it was illegal to have more than one account at all... I thought "Gee, and Blizzard has the character transfer service why then?"

hunters
this is where you went wrong.
people just hate hunters...in any form. :D
I know... my first 70 was a hunter. It can't be wrong when it feels so right.

I would have just told him how ironic it is then that Blizzard employees receive 3 free subscriptions as part of their benefits. All Bliz employees can multibox free of charge. :)

I was leveling 5x lowbie warlock summoning alts (so, <L20 at the time) and had some mouth-breathing paste eater send me a tell "THX FOR RUINING ARENAS" ...
Khadgar is pretty good.. haven't got a lot of hate tells.. though I've
been having some fun with them. I'd tell them that I'm rather
dissappointed with their 'hax/no life/cheater' comments and expect
something better than that. Not suprisingly they can't come up
with anything better hehe
Seems like the level of hate varries greatly by server. I play on Lothar Horde along with with a couple of people boxing on Alliance. We seem to agree that most people see us and think it's cool, or think we're bots at first but have no problem with it once we explain what we're doing. I've always thought it had something to do with the age of the server, Lothar being a release server.

I have every intention of installing the addon ShutUp so only guildies and those on my friends list can contact me*
Be a shame for those who want to ask about how to do it and those who are just nice but Ill be changing the automatic reply to something like "If you are interested in multiboxing you can find out more at dual-boxing.com"
* Anyone know if GMs can bypass chat mods. Not seeing a contact from a GM would be a BAD thing :S

About hearing from GMs - anyone know if they communicate on a chat level that will bypass addons?
I remember when SpamMeNot (or maybe some ignore all addon) came out and someone asked a similar question. It was confirmed GMs could still get in touch but I cant remember if that was built into the addon specifically or whether GM chat over-rode any restrictions.
I would suspect the latter but youd really want to be sure before using this.

While I take pains to make sure few people see me multiboxing (instance runs most of the time, questing separately or at odd hours, etc) some people do figure it out. Almost all of them have had positive things to say to me. They will ask "are you controlling all of them?" because they see this group with the same guild tag and similar names standing somewhere. And when I say yes most of them will reply "haha that's awesome" or "lol that's pretty cool." One person told me he had tried dual boxing and I think that seeing my little army run around had gotten him to think of trying it again.
Then again I do not have any of the general chat channels open, because on my server they are filled with 99% useless stupid crap. It's like a 24/7 retard convention. So if there are people calling me out in public chat channels, I don't see it. It probably doesn't happen because usually when they start up in chat, someone eventually whispers you to ask if you can see what they're saying about you, and I've never had that happen. But again, I stay off of people's radar. My guildmates know that I multibox, and while one of them doesn't seem to like it, he admits that he's impressed. The rest think it's pretty cool and they joke about it whenever I'm on. Someone will log in and say "wow, lots of people on tonight." Then someone else responds "not really, 18 of them are Tonuss." :)

I was playing a massive amount this weekend, so I got some exposure that I normally don't get. While questing, I mostly got decent, respectful questions. I had one jerk insist that I was doing something wrong, but even he was not all that bad. The problem is that it is definitely picking up on the servers that haven't flat out been forced to accept multiboxing.
Lame.
haven't had any bad experience on Shadow Council yet, getting whispers for sure, and so far i've classified them in 2 categories:
- Genuine curious people, that wonder if/ how it's done. I had a rogue follow me for half an hour, asking questions on this and that for example.
- People who 'check' you, to see if you are a bot or not. a couple just /s the word 'bot?' and were somewhat disappointed when i replied using intelligible sentences :-)
Alot of people will say they have seen MB toons already, or know someone who does it. i think it is pretty much getting 'normal'
There are still alot of people who have no clue. For example I went in SFK with 2 pugs and my 3 MB shamies, and at the end of the run the other 2 still had no idea it was only me controlling the 3 DPS.
I think the key is to remain open to conversation, after all, we're not doing anything wrong. Communication is key.
i particularly wouldn't like to /ignore a hater, and not be able to read all the crap he could put in general channel, and not be able to defend/prove myself.

Funny thing is that on Alliance side Cenarius server I got literally about 5-10 hate msgs an hour. Most were just "loser" or "no life" comments but still...
Anyways on Horde side Cenarius server I've gotten a couple of very mild "wtf? dude you are paying for all those accounts?!?" "that's ridiculous" but for the most part people will just run up, watch me for like 2 mins, then run off. Truly amazing the difference between horde and ally on this server.
Although last night I did get some guy follow me on his epic flyer for about 15 mins, logged off, and then 1 min later I'm getting flamed by some level 1 alt telling me I need to get a life. So I msg'ed back "You mean a life that consists of following around complete strangers for damn near 20 mins, then taking the time to come over to horde side and flame him for doing something in a video game that's completely within the maker's rules? NO THX!" /ignore

Endless hate on Andorhal, so much that it contributed to my few month long "break" i've been taking.
It seems very server-dependent for some reason. I rolled a squad on an aussie (oceanic) server, and got endless hostile tells, before i even hit 14. However on my main server (Spirestone) i leveled from 1-70 and farmed Lots of BG gear, and i can count on my hands how many hate messages i got. Most of the feedback was positive or inquisitive. Doesn't hurt that I'm usually at or near the top of the kill charts ;)

Alot of attention when I play alliance, very little and yet to get hate when I play horde.
Go figure.

had no end of hate on Blackhand[A] a few (8?) months ago, hit up Khaz Modan Horde side and have run into a few whiners but nothing too major; for that matter horde-side on blackhand was very chill (probably greatly due to Zanthor /wave - i used to run with Faded Dreams back pre-BC if you knew any of those guys).
having bounced around quite a bit between alliance/horde and different servers it's been my impression that it's entirely dependent on the server community regardless of faction/class/naming selection.

I've found it far more efficient to link people to www.wowwiki.com/Multiboxing than here. Answers their questions a bit faster.
I get nothing on my lock, priest, hunter since they are all so different.
My shammies get asked constantly if they are sisters. Maybe people on Hydraxis don't know what multiboxing is? I have only ever had to ignore 1 person for being stupid. Anyhow, I briefly tell people that no, they're not sisters. I point them to dual-boxing.com and go on with my day.
