So, Im working on a shammy team to start my MB career, and I am planning on running instances as I level. Whats the common practice for speccing? Does everyone go elemental for ease of use, and just take the damage, or do you put a main into enhance to 'tank' for the group?
THanks

All go elemental and learn how to kite with earthbind & stoneclaw totems, blasting away with lightning bolt / chain lightning / frost shock. You *can* spec 1 as resto if you need a dedicated healer later on, but the 5x elemental kite method should get you far.. especially when you hit 50 and get totem of wrath. +15% hit and +15% crit is a ton of extra dps.

There are probably a few ways to do things. Just pick one that fits your playstyle. I play defensive and strategy in instances. I imagined that didn't want to gamble on crits. If they didn't happen, I would be faced with angry melee mobs that want to crush me (again, all elites, since I will be in instances). Next I thought of not having a tank, since to me, having 5 of same class is supposed to be tankless. Just my opinion. I come up with all stam/int/spirit based until 40. I used 2 melee (for stoneskin and strength totems) and 3 resto (down to fire totems and stoneclaws in elemental and rest in resto). I had all ready to melee with either a staff or 1h and shield. It worked really well for me. No problems and no major concerns.
Now that they are 40, I have the 2 melee getting more str/agi gear. They still have int gear incase of times we need to cast a lot. It works out well so far (46). I share aggro, damage, healing and casting duties, so one doesn't get run out of mana or hurt too bad.
Again, just pick a style that fits with you, even if it isn't popular, you are the one that has to live with it.

I found this much easier to do than elemental, primarily because itemization for elemental sucks big hairy donkey balls until you hit outlands, IMO.
I leveled up to 53 as enhancement and then switched to elemental once I had a few pieces of +int chainmail and the talents to actually make it work halfway decent. Once I switched, I didn't bother with instances again until I hit outlands (just straight quested).
Bottom line, though, is do whatever is fun for YOU. :D

This is an unfortunate truth while leveling to 60. I was mainly in all cloth until I hit outlands. I ran and stayed in instances that were 1 to 2 levels lower then me so I didnt have to much issues taking down mobs and didnt have to take too much damage.
But like he says, do what's fun for you and what you feel comfortable with. Since you will be running instances, you will be getting a lot of greens and blues for drops so you can figure which will be more comfortable for ya while leveling.
