View Full Version : Vyndree Cost Me $200 in RL!

Yep, she really did. It is a long, sad tale, but here goes:

Until yesterday I had 5 WoW accounts. All mine from start to finish. I started out with three accounts in the first few months of WoW but upgraded to five about 8 months ago. When I upgraded, I figured I'd save some money by using the "Recruit a Friend" option. However, since everything to do with that option seems to be directed towards Blizzard getting another real person as a customer, I figured if I put my own name on the new accounts it would be seen as against the rules. Not wanting to get in any trouble, I put in a different first name (same last name, same address, same phone number, same secret word, same credit card, always logging in from the same IP address, sequential account names). I thought about using my wife's name but figured that might be seen as account sharing so I just put "Karen" in. There is no "Karen <my last name>" that I know, I just made it up to be "safe".

So I've been playing the five accounts for a while now and even started transferring toons back and forth between them as needed for class setups, etc. Never had any problems at all. Of course, I've had about 40 people /tell me "Reported" or some crap while playing my set of five toons over the months but have never had anything come of it. I had saved my $30 (two Refer a Friends) and never really thought about it again... UNTIL...

I read all Vyndree's posts about how it really is against the Terms to use an account with anyone else's name on it. This starts to worry me as I've put a ton of time into all my toons. Now every time I log into the game I'm worried. ;( But what can I do? I'd hate to call up Blizz and admit I "lied" on the names of two of my accounts - proving that "Karen" really doesn't exist might be dicey and they could ban those two accounts. Or I could just keep playing - I hadn't had trouble so far and I'd even transfered characters with no problem. Still, Vyndree's posts would not leave me in peace - I kept picturing her stading in the midst of a bunch of fish tanks with a stern look on her face shaking her finger at me as I lost my toons forever.

So I came up with a solution that I couldn't get in trouble with - all the benefit and no risk (or so I thought). I called up Blizz support and told them how I'd thought the Refer a Friend thing couldn't be used for yourself so I'd put names that weren't mine on two of my accounts (totally true). But then I told them it was my infant daughter's name that I put in. I explained that I just wanted to update it to my name because I multi-boxed and wanted to be absolutley sure there would be no trouble. So the guy said "No problem at all, sir. I'll just send you a form to fill out, send it back and we'll get that fixed for you." Sweet!

But the email that came from Blizzard didn't make me happy. It said I needed to provide a notorized copy of my daughter's birth certificate showing her full name and another document showing that I was her legal guardian! Obviously that would be difficult to do as I don't have a daughter and "Karen" doesn't exist.

So what could I do? Call them up again and admit that I lied about having a daughter, but please just change the name anyway? Didn't think that was a low risk option.

Instead I just blew a wad of cash. I opened up ANOTHER couple of accounts using my exact name, bought copies of original WoW and BC, activated them, then paid $25 per toon to transfer them to the new accounts. All told, this set me back about 200 bucks.

I blame Vyndree.

Sometimes it costs a lot for peace of mind. I guess it was worth it to me. What would you have done?

Note: The subject of this post is completely tongue in cheek. Vyndree is fabulous and an essential member of our little community. I really appreciate how she clears things up and stops our wild conjecture and have noted my appreciation for her contributions on these boards before. I have to admit I'm completely responsible for the empty hole in my wallet. Still, when I'm all alone on a dark night that image of Vyndree shaking her finger at me still scares me a little bit.

I would have done the right thing .Grab the wife by the hand drag her to the bed room and teller "I need a girl her name will be karen, strip assume the position" But thats me.

I have the same problem with account names but thx to your post I have the fix. I just need an ass load of paper work to send to blizz. How R-tarded it's a freakin on-line game .not like your trying to prove citizenship Ballz .

there any good new games out there not made by bliz ? I think I'm ready to cut and run. perhaps I'll just play till banned so be it, then off to something new.Or nothing at all my 'honey do' list is as long as my arm.

last though: peace of mind ....a great Iron Maiden album and worth 200 bucks.

You could have adopted or procreated (sp?)...but ya, your way was probably cheaper in the long run.

Dude!! Great solution - I didn't even think of that one! I did LOL on that one.

Yeah, if I would have been smart I would have found some kid named Karen <my last name> on the internet, paid to legally adopt them, then give them the hell back after I was done with them. ^^ Would have been MUCH faster, and maybe cheaper!

BTW Keyclone, I blame you as well! Without Keyclone I never would have gotten the other two accounts in the first place! (I need to take up a collection to help with my expenses from all you folks who are REALLY to blame).

Mercurio,Vyndree,s going to pull your ear, finger shaking is for lesser offences.

She can pull whatever she wants if I can just get that image out of my head! With that look of righteous fury on her face she really is scary! Really, she walks around everywhere with her Righteous Fury on, just ask her!

First, yes I made an account just to comment on this. Second, learn the difference between a Juggalo and, you know, a theif. Chances are its some damn slipknot fan if its a fan of ANY music base. Considering how slipknot preaches that other people arnt worth anything.

As for the duel boxing costing the OP 200, sorry to hear that =( (Honestly, Im not a fan of DB, but I decided to look up how hard it is to set up, get a better opinion on it. All I can say is it SEEMS pretty fair, but it is annoying to run into.)

solution is quite simple and this solution gives you a bonus as well.

you adapt a china kid around 17 or so, give her allowence or however its spelled, all she have to do is to chance her name to karen, and do dailys for you and a few hours each week farm some gold for you :P
since she is adapted its legal ofc hehe

How did you get away with a character transfer if the names didn't match?

Great question. The answer... I really don't know.

I was a little nervous when I did the first transfer to the new account from the old "Karen" account. I kept checking the Transfers page and it took longer than it usually had in the past. I worried that the Blizzard account guy had put a note in my accounts about my request to change the name and they were looking into it thinking it was suspicious that I didn't send the official documents in but wanted to transfer toons out.

I was fairly confident it would work though simply because I had done four transfers into the "Karen" accounts from my original three over the last eight months and they worked just fine. Looking back, it is a bit surprising that I didn't have any trouble with it - the only thing I can think is that *everything* else was exactly the same so they assumed it was my kid or something.

You can transfer characters so long as the LAST NAME is the same. Also the billing zipcode might have to be the same too. I've done it though, I transfered a rogue I wasn't playing to my father's account successfully.

I'm with KeyClone - if my latency is 23,328,000,000 ms I find it's too hard to play - melee anyways. Anything more than 10 or 15 billion ms is just plain annoying.

You were much betterer to xfer the toonz.

Somehow the content of this thread didn't quite match up to my perhaps slightly twisted expectations when I entered it.

It would cost more to make a baby daughter with the name of Karen.

Would adopting a bitch (female dog) named Karen work? Go see the animal shelter!

That depends i suppose on if your referring to the country "The Republic of South Africa" or simply the approximate lower half of the continent of Africa as a whole.

I really have no clue wtf you were trying to get at by 'do you even know where that is'. what kind of an idiot do you take me for? how could ANYONE not know where the hell Africa is.

So, to inform you, of the logic behind my tongue in cheek generalizations: Asia used to be the 'place of choice' for cheap labor. It used to be (probably still is) quite popular to say, ship old computers in bulk to china so poor people could rip them apart(for the trace amounts of valuable scrap). Eg if i was gonna pay people to farm gold, i'd probably go find some really poor people. (tho, now that I think about it, Indonesia might be a good choice too.) However, this is sorta a self defeating process, as you do this more and more, well, the countries and such do not necessarily stay poor. So, now (sometimes) old computers are shipped to poor parts of Africa for the same purpose. (According to what I've read on the internet; if i were less lazy i would go find links to the articles. I don't claim to be a world traveler or God, but it doesn't sound that far fetched. I got unlazy ('http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Technology/story?id=1479506'),and here ('http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0WMX/is_20_22/ai_n15966870')) I can't find the original article, it was really more a collection of pictures; which is why its somewhat hard to find again. So anyway, my logic, in short, if the E-waste thing shifted (slowly) from Asia to Africa maybe the Gold farmer thing will too! Maybe somewhat of a logical fallacy, but hey, i thought it made for a decent joke.

So, anyway, yeah, i made a generalization about Africa. I suppose i should have said Africa instead of South Africa so people wouldn't think i was necessarily referring to one specific country, sorry to any residents of that country I might have inadvertently offended. (If your not a member of that country and I offended ya with that, lol. get a life. really.) No, as far as I know off hand, there aren't any gold farmers in Africa, but hey, it wouldn't surprise me either. Wikipedia ('http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_farming') does mention gold farmers being in other countries (heh, Indonesia is mentioned by name! ) but not any African nations. Maybe Africa is actually too poor to support that in terms of infrastructure.... /shrug)

I honestly don't know why I bothered to explain the logic behind my gross generalization....it was meant to be funny. In the same vein of people always talking about Chinese gold farmers. really, the whole point was to point out (in a very tongue in cheek way) that it (probably) wouldn't be very profitable for Americans to do that, at least as a primary source of income. (I can totally see some kid doing it just because he thinks its cool, tho)

Lol, wow, that was a long post.

Oh, and @Otlecs, mine neither. I had no idea what i was thinking. Maybe some kinda bet. lol.

But, you can get the state to pay for the daughter. sorta. then give it away after the accounts are back. (legally, i mean. lol.)

you might be correct. Tho i wasn't really referring to computers...more; electronic parts =0. somehow its cheaper to build things overseas, ship it here, then ship it back for disposal. never figured that one out, lol.
