View Full Version : The downside of boosting with Zolo (no gear)

So while i was leveling my main 5 unique class squad, I decided that I wanted a second paladin to do some boosting (mostly to farm boss drops) so I rolled another paladin, and cause I wanted another boosting character for my main account. I also happened to have 3 lvl 10 warlocks so I took them along for the ride through VC/SFK/Stocks/SM. Then I learned about the zolo trick, and got insanely great xp/hour rates (120,000 exp per hour) Only problem was (besides massive repair bill) my toons are now lvl 56 and still wearing SM gear (and some stuff even lower, back from DM (Gold Flecked Gloves) lol.
Long story short, if you plan on doing the boosting trick with zolo, be prepared to have toons that can barely hang at their own level. I had expected to just run them through strath a few times to get to 58 and then start in outland, but they are SO undergeared, that they get one shotted by elites, making boosting slow going. I ended up backing down to BRD to get some boss drops there, and it was a bit better, although if any of them drew aggro, it was GG for them. I even did some Hellfire Ramparts, and it was possible, albeit slow going, cause their dps sucked, the paladin did more...

I Zolo'd™ my alts to 56, then just decided to do the WPL/EPL quests to 58. It took some time to get their skills up (hunter hadn't shot her bow in 36 levels lol), but once I did it came pretty fast. I dragged my Pally along for buffs, elite tanking and fending off pesky allies.
lvl 70 prot pallys do a very decent amount of dps tbh, if im tanking dumbass MH trash my dps is nearly as good as or beter then the lower end dpsers (or the non aoe'sers) in the guild im in.
Still, if you hit 56, do some other instance to hit 58, then do the hellfire chain quests to get gear that lasts you at least as far (and passed) as nagrand. I remember my crew also being in sm gear when they where in the 50 regions. There just isnt that much gear to get around in the older content. Shouldnt be needed as well, can lvl up fine with lower quality gear, especially boxing.

What is this "boosting trick with zolo" you speak of? I've never heard of any boosting tricks labeled as "Zolo". I'm curious now.

Zolo thread ('http://dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=8099') (warning: you'll have to read most of it to get to the Zolo parts)

I just finished boosting to 55 using zolo (Didn't want to do another 3 hours to get to 56 due to half the skeletons not yielding exp). I started running around and doing quests, started with felwood and un'goru crater. My dudes were in entirely SM gear and I had no problems questing on normal mobs. I did 55 to 56 with a total xp/hour rate of 40k, including a very massive amount of travel time getting two flight routes. I was very pleased with the results to be quite honest. It was also nice to no longer have the huge wallet drain of boosting to deal with. 18g/hr repair bills got old fast. I know I could go into strat and do baron runs very similarly to Zolo and go into the 60's but at this point I'm tired of boosting.
For those that have a paladin to boost with, I would highly recoment doing the zolo trick that is already linked. It is a super fast way to get your toons fro 35 to 55.
Well if you've got a pally, you can aggro the unkillable guys by the Dark Portal entrance and let your nublings whackamole for hours to skill up... and to level defense, I would imagine just aggro some lowbie trash, throw down your healing totems, and watch TV... Gear is cheap compared to time.

I did something similar in stocks, I just aggro'd some mobs, told the lowbies to melee, and for a while everything missed. I hardly took any dmg at all, and the lowbies skilled up their weapons.

A couple of times I have gone to work for 8 hours and come back to my toons still just whacking away. Since you stay in combat it will not auto log you off due to being AFK. If you get Dc'ed that's another story.

How feasible would you say doing the Zolo thing would be with a 70 Shaman? I'd be willing to respec to whatever if it works. Gear is primarily all +spell dmg and healing, so I'd need to get a green set, but it sounds like thats the way to go because of repairs anyway.
Edit: I had to respec, ended up with 0/20/41, but between stoneskin, grace of air, mana spring, earth shield, and NATURE's GUARDIAN!!!!! talent I can stay up indefinitely. Just throw out the occasional heal and magma totem to tag.

I'd probably hold off on respeccing if I were you till you figure out what the other resto shamans are doing to get this done.

After you finish zolo just go to ramparts at 56 with your pally tank. It will be slow at first but when you get almost a level in 1 clear its pretty nice. When you hit 58 you can start getting outland gear then your set. My guys all had sm gear at 58 and some lvl 14 gear :).

As pinotnoir says, I'd just grind to Honored rep with CE and HH in instances. Assuming you're boosting with a 70 Paladin then you should have NP as all of Ramps is soloable, so you can at least clear trash to 1st/2nd boss no matter how bad the 70's gear is. You'll be 60+ easily, then do a bit of research on HFP and Zangar quests and knock the ones that give you gear to fill some slots. Then maybe fill out some more gear slots with crafted or AH'd BoEs. This will be more than enough gear to do all the rest of the HFP/Zangar quests even without a 70 helping, which should get you a complete set of gear if you do everything and choose the rewards correctly.
