View Full Version : Half your Zoning Times! (amazing defrag program)

Hello folks.

Honestly, no messing around this program is amazing! It's also won an award. My wow loading times between zones have literally halved since running this program. Theres one option (which is reccomended by the developer) to Optimize by sorting all files by name (folder + filename). This means that literally your entire WoW directory will be in one big block on your hard drive rather than in pieces all over (which is what it will be like on your machines at the moment even if windows defragmenter thinks its clean).

Admitedly the 1st time i run this optomize it took the best part of 24 hours to complete (i have 1TB of hard drive space) and i was very dubious as to the gain/loss i was going to get from it but my god, it was worth it!! (please note that this optomization only has to be run once - after that the fast optomize option finishes my hard drives in about 15/20 mins) I have a loud hard drive and when i used to zone on WoW i could hear my hard drive seeking all over the place but now almost silent.

The forum for the program is very helpful and informative with the developer replying to nearly all questions etc. It's probably best not to hear it from me, but to have a browse through their forum and check it out.

It has no fancy GUI - command based stuff (but its not too hard), so i ended up doing a lot of ready first - but my advice if you are going to use this (which i really reccomend) is: (taken from main page of program)

What is the best defragmentation/optimization strategy for me?
My advise for all computers is to run JkDefrag once with the "-a 7" optimization
(sort by name), and from then on automatically every day with the default "-a 3"
fast-optimize option.

Note: The "-a 9" optimization (sort by last access time) only works as expected
if you do not use programs that scan all files on disk (such as virus scanners and
backup programs), causing Windows to update all the last access times.

So if your having problems with loading times, give it a go! Tell me what you think.

Cheers

I'm just doing the default defrag atm. I'll try the -a7 when I get some time.

This will be a nice compliment to my Perfect Disk, thanks for the tip!

After doing the suggested -a 7 then -a 3 I do see a noticeable improvement.

We are starting to use this defragmenter at work now lol. It works great for my SQL servers.

In theory I guess it works, but with 4 accounts feeding off of the same symbolic link directory, I'm still looking at major chugga chugga loading times -- ~3-4 minutes to load up 4 accounts, massssive lag at SW bank, etc. There's still no way of getting around having a separate drive for each account, I think -- but that's not viable on a laptop. XD

Thanks for this find. I have been using Diskkeeper for years and didn't want to upgrade my license for vista. This is perfect!

L. O. L. Since all my systems run fast as hell, I haven't bothered to check this in recent memory. I got to checking the file fragmentation status last night:

Main "C" = 51%
Work "C" = 21%
Work "E" = 23%
Work "F" = 19%
Work "G" = 33%
Alt2 "C" = 28%
Alt2 "F" = 17%
Alt3 "C" = 0%
Alt4 "D" = 6%

Looks like I've been neglecting things far too long. 3am cron jobs ftw!

I just wanted to add my support for this tool.
It's boosted the performance of both of my machines significantly.
Thanks for letting us know about this great software! :D

I have it run nightly on all my systems, work and personal, but there is another great program for on the fly defrag, it is call defraggler, from defraggler.com. you can choose to just defrag a single directory, like your wow dirs after a patch...

I have tried this defrag tool yesterday, and it seems to indeed work really well.

The Zeppelin from UC to Grom Gol
- Before Defrag: my toons would appear as the zep starts leaving the platform in GromGol and i would have to jump off
- After Degrag: my toons appear as the zep *arrives* at the GromGol platform.

Thanks for the tip!
