Hey all, complete noob to this whole thing here. I didn't even know such a thing could exist until last night. (of course though, I'd thought about just trying to run two computers side by side...)
I plan to try out dual boxing on one computer tonight, which will be easy since I already have access to two accounts. Hopefully I can get it up and running.
I hate to see by reading that there is a lot of jealousy towards multi-boxers. I see this sort of thing and think it's cool as hell, I don't see why someone would hate it. Of course, if you go to a non-gaming forum and post something about WoW, they automatically assume you have no life, so I guess this is just the next logical step.
Wish I had money for a 5 box setup...or if I could see the magical 10 box setup that Xzin has. Someday though...someday... *starts saving*

Welcome... I think you will find that multi-boxing is addictive.
To run multiple accounts on one machine you will want to read the threads regarding Keyclone and/or AutoHotKey.
Enjoy!

Thanks! I haven't even started and I'm already addicted. ;)
I tried last night to run the two screens at once. It worked great, got 60 fps on both. I could even try for three, but don't know if I want to go that far so soon.
I didn't get Keyclone or AHK going yet though. That's the next step for tonight. I might just pay for keyclone since it looks like it might be a bit simpler for someone so new to the whole thing like me.

Keyclone was a huge help to me. I am only two or three weeks into this whole multi boxing thing myself. I didn't feel that learning to program AHK would be a good investment of my time when just trying out multi-boxing so I purchased Keyclone, it worked so great that I'll continue to use it even when I get some free time to learn AHK scripting.
As far as trying out more boxes so soon after starting... well, the learning curve is big whether you are going two or five or ten. Best advice on that I have heard is from Zin, "Start as you intend to continue." I would shoot for as many boxes as you think you want to do. Trial accounts are cheap.
I started with three and then discovered I could run two clones on each of my two laptops. So I am running five now and haven't looked back.
So if you think you would enjoy doing three, shoot for three, and if you think five is the way to go, shoot for five.

This is all true but at the end of that trial, if you feel you really enjoy the challenge of multiboxing, be mindful that the monthly charge is $60 a month or $720 a year. Not a cheap hobby by any means.

That's why I'll start with two, since I already have two accounts (one for me, one for my GF). If that goes well, I'll try a third as a trial.
Then if that goes well, then that's where the money would come in, since I'd have to upgrade. That's also when I'd decide what I want to do (probably 5 box), and I'd upgrade based on that need.
But then again, who knows, maybe I'll hate it and I can waste my money in some other way. =)

You wouldn't have been on PTR by any chance would you? =)
I referred about 5 people to this site after they saw me playing two Shamans.
Slats and Slatss.
Some guy even asked me if I was Xzin in which I told them Xzin 10 boxes not a mere two. *grins*
In other news I should be up and running with all my 5 box hardware in about 2 weeks. Cant WAIT.

Nope, sorry. I found this site through the wowwiki article on multiboxing, which I found through...I can't even remember what I was looking for.

Since I'll be running on one computer, with only one monitor at the moment, I'm wondering how often you look at your secondary screens.
Say I was running three windowed copies of WoW. How much of the secondary screens would I need to see? Just enough to get a general idea of what's going on?
The monitor I have now is actually pretty small, I need to upgrade. (started saving up to get a proper 5 box equipment upgrade...)
Ran low on funds this week so I have to wait until the weekend to buy Keyclone and finally get going. Over the weekend I realized how much I want to multibox when I had to constantly wait for other people to help with some elite quests and instances.

Finally got keyclone up and running. Right now I'm running with 2 warlocks while my girlfriend plays a paladin. Once I get the hang of everything I think I will start 2 mages or warlocks, and a priest.
Trying to learn macros now, but it might as well be written in chinese.
I need to get a 2nd monitor, running WoW in windows mode makes it hard to see what is going on.
It's fun when I walk up on a lone enemy and I can hit tab to target him. But when there are multiple targets, they sometimes target different ones, which is not good. Trying to find macros for that. Also, when I'm walking and get attacked, it's hard to maneuver my guys into attack position, since they can't cast if they're not facing them.
Going well though, it's neat to see two going at once, can't wait to try three, although three slows down just a bit on my computer.

you should make do-not-pass Tab key. So you Tab enemies on you main char and your toon casts all spells with macro /assist *char* binded to each spell

Good idea, I have much to learn. :)
These macros might be the end of me. I'll just have to start fiddling around with some and see how it goes.

I thought I saw somewhere on here either someone asking or telling this, but I can't seem to find it.
Is there a macro or any button that makes your character face the target? I've been having some problems casting spells because of this.
Also, I'm a really clueless with some of this stuff. On the action bars, there is your main one, then the secondary ones that are numbered (2-6?). What button would you hit to activate the action in bar 2, or can't this be done?
I'm going to spend my entire day tomorrow reading about this stuff so maybe I can get some idea what I am doing...
WoW has no /face command. Some other games have and do have it.
Would be nice - or roll Warlocks and forget about it for most spells.
Or learn to turn all of your casters at the same time.
Or use the /follow command to face with one and have the others follow (and face).

I think I'll have to learn to face them. I'm only going to run two I think, so that shouldn't be too hard.
Thanks.

action bar pages are being switched by shift+12345.... keys. Shift+mouse wheel up/down switches them also.

Ran into some problems tonight. After a few hours of playing over the course of a few days, WoW suddenly doesn't seem to want to run two clients at once, or something.
I was walking along, and both locked up. Completely. I had to turn off my computer completely. Restarted, loaded back up, and everything was okay for about 20 minutes. Then they locked up again.
Then I'd load up one, which would work fine, but as soon as I loaded the 2nd client, it'd lock up.
Hopefully it's nothing serious, I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Two seperate WoW Folders? Wondering if something is having issues with writing to a file at the same time.
Maybe video card overheating? Shouldn't be though, perhaps even a fucked ram chip -- as you reach the upper ends of your memory perhaps.

I have three seperate WoW folders, tried all 3. I copied and pasted them, didn't create them from the CD since I heard that can cause problems.
I don't know much about video cards or RAM, so who knows if that is what it is. I hope not...

Is it locking up as you alt tab?
Or just random?
TheStender

Just randomly. First two times were as I was walking.
After that, I'd load up both clients, and the first would kind of freeze, but not lock up, and my 2nd client would do the loading screen, and the lock up before it would go into my character. He'd show up on my 1st client though, then after a few minutes would log off.
