Need help with addons

so ive never ever used any addons

and really want a damage metre for my mage

so i downloaded "recount" from curse.com

but dont know how to get it working

can anyone tell me how to set it up, or know of any better dps metres and could tell me how to set them up

This (http://www.the-wow-blog.com/how-to-install-wow-addons/) might help with getting the mod installed, if that's your problem. I don't use recount myself, preferring SWStats, but I hear good things about it so it's probably as good as any.

In terms of using / configuring it, mods usually add a button to your minmap. Give that a click and the rest should be self-explanatory.
