My alts are now at level 43 and I'm practically done with the Cathedrael. The experience returns are far too low.

What is the next logical step to go in order to get them up to the level of the main character (who is a level 60 and has been boosting them)?

I would have thought somewhere like Sunken Temple or Marudon perhaps, also the wiki has a lot of info for instance levels and such like.

Edit: How could I forget ZF? :P

Yup ZF is good. Can stay in there till your 50's.

I did ZF myself, but when you hit 48-49 there are several good places to quest.
Hinterlands is kill quest heaven. Make sure you have questhelper and you will finish 90% of the hinterland quests in 2 hours or so and probably lvl by quite a margin.
Ungoro is then pretty open for you, although personally I avoided it as I hate the place. Then questing in felwood, and western plaguelands. There is a quest at that place just before entering western plaguelands that talks about some cauldrons.. it is the easiest quest yet brings in around 40k xp in a matter of 30mins.
If you did go to ungoro, you probably should already be able to go to winterspring and from there silithus. although I personally was too impatient and went from winterspring straight to outlands.

Do the occasional BRD run too :) or LBRS for some gear and xp

I believe that you can only get the cauldrons quests starting at lvl 50.

If you are 43 now i would go to zf and grab the quest there. There are about 4 pick up quests that has no chains (3 in the town and 1 in the shimmering flats). 1 run should get you like 6 bars (don't forget to get the 10% bonus by dancing at the pole out of the town). The quests should at least get you a half a lvl. So just running zf once will get you about a lvl in an hour (that is how long it takes my rogue to do it).

Oh i forgot the quest in shimmering flats you need a hammer to summon the boss for the drop. To get the hammer is a little quest line, kill a mob in hinterlands (100% drop, not a quest but a drop). Take the hammer to a tower in Hinterlands to "charge" it, and then you have done.

What i am planning to do with the 44s are to go to Felwood and kill the Timber guys for some rep until lvl 45. Then going to do some scholo till 50. At 50 do the cauldrons quests (should put me to 50.5 or 51) then go back to scholo till around 55. Then grind some rep in outlands. The only thing is i thought that the timber guys where low to mid 40s, but i looked them up today and they are 48-50. So after work going to see if i can kill them. If not then 3 more zf runs should put me to 45. I don't mind zf too much it is just that it takes me an hour to clear that place (skipping the stairs) and only getting like 5 bars, i think the best place where i get my xp from is the dirt piles which spawn dead trolls, i get about 3 bars just in that area.

Do you guys think that a team of 4 shams at lvl 44 take out lvl 48-50 mobs?
What about a team of 2 lock and a priest?

(The 2 teams that i have. the second team is missing a lock because she is already lvl 70)
