View Full Version : Prejudice Against MultiBoxing

First off, this is my first post to these forums so don't be too quick to judge what I have to say, just trying to see if anyone else is facing this.
I've been multi-boxing since I first started playing WoW over two years ago. Didn't think much of it, but didn't really do it seriously until a little while ago. These forums have been helpful in trying to figure out setup and ease of load. I'm still improving and will post my setup soon, but I'm waiting on my fifth monitor and mount lol. But anyway, here is the main crux of this thread, people who don't box hate those who do.
I don't know why people get so insanely pissed at someone who is playing the same game they are just with five chars at a time or more. My main chars, are all in a single end game raiding guild and people ask me why I have chars that are the same class, and how I have so many. I told them I leveled them all myself (which is true) and the fact that if you know how its easy. Well, I finally decided to let them know I multibox and the next thing I knew I was the butt of tons of jokes about having 5 boxes, and tons of other comments on how stupid it is and that it doesn't make sense. I'm just wondering, why do people have to get so jealous that it turns to hate? I mean, I'm jealous of Xzin, but you don't see me posting hate in the forums like "God, I hate you, you are stupid." No instead I see inspiration to do more and do better. The good thing is though, some of them have taken it in stride and I'm apprenticing two other people how to dual box which is great. Here is a little humor that someone posted, I think we can like it just as long as you take the time to laugh about it.

I know. We had this huge fight on a norwegian board over some guy posting how he hates multiboxers and that they should be banned. Turned out to be a several pages long flamewar

My thoughts too. /ignore and if it gets too bad /report.
I'll spend any amount of time talking to someone in game who is interested in what I am doing, but the moment it becomes "you're a hacker" or "you're fat and gay" or anything other than genuine interest or good natured amusement they go on the ignore list.
I get a TON of positive response too.. but then I take the time to do a little Role Playing with the girls. I think we have a slight, I say SLIGHT, responsibility to entertain and explain. Seriously, even if Blizzard has given the "nod" to us, it hasn't been in any official way and if enough of their GM's times are taken up with complaints regarding us... well, cost+time vs. pissing off a very few multiboxers... do the math.
So I do what I can to do a little PR work for the community while in game.

i agree with ITMonkey 100%... definitely the healthier, long-term attitude. (i can attest to the results of not being nice ... look to shadowbane and the nuclear bomb that went off amongst the carebears when i first pulled out keyclone.. wolfpack ended up changing the game to make its impact less)
wow shouldn't have this issue due to the sheer number of servers... and pvp / rp difference

I went into BG's at 18 with my 5 shaman team and I can tell you most of my team was fairly annoyed and made comments about it for whatever reason (I wasn't paying much attention). After I saved the day with my excessive flame shock spamming a few times they started to like it.
I've also talked to quite a few people who understand the concept of multi-boxing and they just want to know more about it or wish they could do it.
There will always be those that don't understand it and send stupid tells and I try to point them to this site to make them understand but other than that I tell them to report me and enjoy when I don't get banned.

I love the prejudice that we're all neckbeards living in some parents basement, feeding only on cheetos, when it turns out that so far, every single one who has presented themselves here, has been a socially capable and intelligent human being.
We have more time and money and ideas, dreams and goals than other people, that's for sure. I even dare say that we might have a bit more grey matter in use from all of this.

The one question that I most often hear in the discussions gone bad has a lot to do with paying for the 5 accounts. The stance is typically that only a "loser" would pay for 5 WoW subscriptions.
But the fact that a person is saying something like this reveals a great deal about himself, enabling us to assume that:
he might be a kid who hasn't paid for anything in his life
or
he might have a unsatisfying job and probably very limited income
Now I'm not saying the reverse is true, that all kids or people who don't have a lot of income behave like this, if you catch my drift.
My point is that these particular bad apples probably view WoW as the one domain of their life where they can "excel" in their own sense, without the usual constraints of money and power that they may lack in real life. Now when they meet someone with the resources to do 5-times what they're doing, and pwn the shit out of them, their reaction is expectedly straight-forward and simple.
If an individual truly fits with this description, I think that our attitude towards him shouldn't be one of animosity, but one of pity... more along the lines of "there there, I'm sure that... one day, you'll get a job good enough to know that $75/mo is pocket change"
[Before anyone takes this too seriously, I'd like to point out that this post is satirical]

Ya, I love the "you have no life" comments from someone with an epic dragon mount and tier 4/5 items.
There are stupid people. That is a fact of life. Ignore them and move on. Do NOT get dragged down to their level of stupidity.

I'm glad this thread has popped up and others are showing good positive experiences on how to deal with it.
Currently in the 70 BG bracket my 4 Shamans get quite a bit of flack in every game I join, but I've found a method that works great and those sneers of 'bots/hacker' diminish quickly.
Kill them with kindness -give them nothing they can use as a negative comment or fuel to go on more, and show your a real person behind the character.
I've had many occasions using this method having it completely revert and they want to get into multi-boxing and just 5 minutes ago stated I was being reported and how much of a cheater I was.

I don't get much negative stuff ... if the person has heard of me from the class forums then they know what to expect. Of course I can't really post much cept at the wizard or warrior forums and not get a ton of flames (not for boxing though).
If the person has not heard of me they are just stunned someone is playing 24 characters at one time. "Why do all these character look the same with simlar names" "Are you all friends irl?" "Is this a GM event?" "Hey what illusion spell is that?"
Zek is kinda small population now a days, all the old schoolers know me already, I get the pvpers who try and kill me for the bragging rights but the others just want buffs or "are you the guy that does raids can you kill mob X for me" heh, (actually I don't do raids yet but people expect that from a 24 boxer).
All the converstaion on Zek is pvp orentated about who can kill who and all that, not really about boxing.
And anyone tells me that "you have no life" I just say: "I already won at life, now I am working on winning at EQ". Or my ever popular quote:
You can play EQ all day and lose at life, or you can win at life so you can play EQ all day. Either way you play EQ all day.

ive never understood the 'omg you have 5 toons you have no life' thing.. doesnt having multiple toons increase your efficiency? especially if youre running 4 mages/priest.. best aoe grinding combo in the game. supply your own buffs, water.. people dont think before they speak.
people will whinge about any excuse they can find when they lose. if it wasnt multiboxing theyd be whinging about your gear. if it wasnt your gear theyd be whinging that youre higher level.. or that your connections faster.. or that jesus loves you better.
no matter how much you try to justify or explain or rationalise with stupid people.. you just end up confusing them. just /autoreply QQ and eventually theyll get frustrated that youre not taking the bait and shut up.

Yeah, I love the people who claim you are cheating at the game, when in fact you are making the game harder for yourself. The whole reason I started multi-boxing was the same reason the zin's did it. I got bored with the normal game and this is how I have fun now with it. Raiding is boring even though I'm in a high end progression guild, but when I dual-box heal it turns into an adventure lol. I'm working on ten boxing karazhan but who knows when that will happen.

My Guild just think its crazy to spend the money on a game - but what they dont realize is that a hardware setup can move to another MMO.

I can't remem the name atm, but there used to be an addon that increased to number you could have in your ignore list (think it had no limit on number of ignores).

I think you can get in effect the same effect from some chat addons that will filter incoming chat, rather than filter for GOLD or www. (to remove annoying gold selling chat) you could add the names to that. Personally I use Prat, and I know the functionality is there, I just have no use for it yet. :D

Good news, if you multibox and can play on US servers, Mag is the place to go. Just from the community I experienced last night there is no other place for me

Try asking anyone how much they spend on an evening at the pub or bar nowadays and the answer is about 50 to 100 euro ... My answer is usually "great, that's the ammount it takes me to have fun ingame for about 30 evenings in a row if I wanted to :), now let's not talk about it anymore".
Usually also helps to point them to this awesome forum (which I can even post on with ma freaking BB).
The odd /target /assist party1 /dance is always a good way to break the ice off course :)
