View Full Version : How do YOU heal?

This question isn't mean to seek out how healing with 5 toons is done, per se, rather to find out different styles used by various other Mb'ers and maybe get a few pointers. First off, here is who I am and what i do.
I have 2 teams Pally tank, Pally healer, SPriest, Affliction Lock and Frost mage (level 24) AND I have Pally tank 70, Holy Priest 70, Fire mage 70 and Demo Lock 62. I heal using a couple methods. First, I have down ranked heals built into one of the 2 combat buttons I use. So one of my two main buttons has my priest spam Greater Heal Rank 4 on my tank, only. I also use Healbot (btw, if you know how to increase the size of this mods frame please let me know) and I simply click on a toons health when he is low and he gets a heal. This works ok for me, but I am fishing for some other brilliant ideas. Most of the cool healing ideas I have read so far are specific to shaman so any other useful input you have would be great. I don't use a focus system, btw.
Thanks for you input.

Try Clique.

It let's you mousover any unit frame, and you can assign spells to any key/mouse combination
Controll my dpser using the keyboard 1-12 +shift/ctrl/alt keys. My healer/main I use my mouse for mostly. I use GRID, a great mod for solo boxing or multiboxing if you're healing, IMHO.

I also have grid, but I don't use it. Perhaps I'm using it incorrectly. You select your target on grid then click your heal spell?

On my mixed groups (warrior, hunter, warlock, priest and 1 of any class), I use priest to heal and others to help lower damage done to tank. Warlock uses curse of recklessness for weak mobs (no running), or curse of weakness for stronger ones. The less the healer has to heal, the more he can help DPS. My hunter uses scorpid sting to lower damage done (misses 5%). Warrior uses demo shout and thunder clap. Most parts add up so I don't have to heal a lot. My priest uses a bubble at same time warrior charges or range pulls. It happens like .1 sec before mobs aggro, so only tank gets aggro and then doesn't need heal for a while. I have talent that lowers rage loss and I try to end fight with 70%+ rage. That way I can use any move I want and don't have to worry about getting rage (or missing rage from bubble).
On my shammies (only 34), I use 4 healing totems and 1 mana. Very rarely do I need to heal. I use a scatter/stagger lesser heal, 2 at a time. Example:
/castsequence [target=focus-target-target] reset=combat Lesser Healing Wave, , , Lesser Healing Wave (alt 1 and 3)
/castsequence [target=focus-target-target] reset=combat , Lesser Healing Wave, , , Lesser Healing Wave (alt 2 and 4)
It works really well. There isn't any tank, but whoever has aggro gets healed and it ends up sharing damage across 3-4 people, so people don't need heals a lot.
On my hunters (39), I use Gift of the Naaru. For BG's, I use 2 waves of it to only heal my main. Every rogue in the BG thinks he wants to show off by killing my main and disabling me, so I put 3 GotN on my main on one push and then 2 more on second push. I also use potions. In instances, I use pets to tank and hunters to off tank. Mostly send in pets, and if they get hurt a lot, I multishot and pull a couple mobs to me and into traps. If I don't want them on me anymore, I use pets to get them off me (taunt) or feign. All my pets have growl on, so they share the damage pretty equally.
My main goal is to lower damage on mixed group or spread out damage on my same groups. Not sure if that helped.
Mellyjean, you are 2 boxing I assume?
Yes, Hunter and Priest for now. I realize that I'll have to switch to keys for healing once I step up to 5 boxing.
I also have grid, but I don't use it. Perhaps I'm using it incorrectly. You select your target on grid then click your heal spell?
Yes, I use grid. The reason I like Grid more than regular unit frames is that Grid shows me more information quickly. I know who has aggro, who has an incoming heal already, I can see who has debuffs on them, who has low health, ect. I use it a TON in raids with my guild. I won't go into Kara without it.

You should check out Healbot. It shows buffs, health and all you have to do it click on their name (either left, right or middle button) to apply a heal.

im not running a mixed group, but just to add my 2c.
im running 5 shamans, using the /focus system to assign targets.
first off on my nr. 2 key i have:
#showtooltip
/cast [target=focustarget, help]lesser healing wave(rank 5); [target=focustarget] Lightning bolt
and on my nr.3 key:
#showtooltip
/cast [target=focustarget,help]Chain Heal(rank 3); [target=focustarget] Chain Lightning
(i got a seperated bigbang macro using trinkets and EM + CL)
what this allows me too, is first and foremost to target dmg spells.. but second of all, using my main (having focus) to cast healsx5 on partymembers AND nonpartymembers.
In addition to this, due to lag with getting a targettarget, i also use my F1-F5 key's for direct heals
F1 key: /cast [target='name1']Lesserhealingwave rank highest -2
F2 key: /cast [target='name2']Lesserhealingwave rank highest -2
etcetc
this allows me to INSTA heal x5 on one of my own, especially needed in pvp or pve when 1 target is getting hammered (side effect, agro gets switched too :D)
reason for using highest rank-2 is cause at that rank total healing done x5 = equal to max healthpool.. would be a waste to use a higher rank.
edit: pressed submit too early
what i also done was using Grid to show party healthbars horizontally, and aligned those above my F1-F5 key's on the screen (check my profile for other posts of mine to check screenshots of my UI). this way i can easily spot which character is in need of heals and mash the right button..
problem though if i switch screen/focusmaster grid shows the back lineup (new master becomes Party1 on his own screen :S), but you get used to it and mentally adept. at least i do :D

The following is my healing macro as it is now, i've got a different button bound for each toon on numpad, this is more or less my healbutton :P, holds a lot of fallback logic so when switching main I can still use it, and I where in a process of switching to targeting instead of focus, but I skipped it midway :P I guess the logic is pretty self explaining but feel free to ask questions :)
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast [target=focustargettarget, nomodifier, exists, help] Healing Wave(Rank 4)
/cast [target=focustarget, nomodifier, exists, help] Healing Wave(Rank 4)
/cast [target=targettarget, nomodifier, exists, help] Healing Wave(Rank 4)
/cast [target=target, nomodifier, exists, help] Healing Wave(Rank 4)
/cast [target=focustargettarget, modifier:ctrl, exists, help] Lesser Healing Wave
/cast [target=focustarget, modifier:ctrl, exists, help] Lesser Healing Wave
/cast [target=targettarget, modifier:ctrl, exists, help] Lesser Healing Wave
/cast [target=target, modifier:ctrl, exists, help] Lesser Healing Wave
/cast [target=focustargettarget, modifier:alt, exists, help] Chain Heal
/cast [target=focustarget, modifier:alt, exists, help] Chain Heal
/cast [target=targettarget, modifier:alt, exists, help] Chain Heal
/cast [target=target, modifier:alt, exists, help] Chain Heal
I have eleven keys dedicated to healing on my Paladin, Resto Shaman, 3x Elemental Shaman group.
The first five correspond to the five characters and make the Resto Shaman drop a heal on them, the second set are alongside and are the more urgent heals where everyone will heal apart from the Paladin who'll try and pull agg/protect them, finally there's a single button for the "Oh God" healing where the entire party's taking damage and everyone'll heal another character. I also use that to 'top up' the party between fights quite often.
In addition to this I also run Clique to let all of my characters do healing with mouse presses. This is often used outside of instances where I can afford to be lazy and so the Resto Shaman becomes another DPS and the Paladin takes over the healing role- just a quicker way to kill without needing to go through the entire totems/pull/aggro/kill cycle.

Prot Paladin (Party1 or Focus)
[ - Mana Tap
U - none
I - none

P - none
; - macro for daily quests
ELE Shaman 1& 2

O - /cast [target=Party1Target, help] Healing Wave; /cast [target=TargetTarget, help] Healing Wave; /cast [target=Target, help] Healing Wave
P - /cast [target=Party1Target, help] Chain Heal; /cast
[target=TargetTarget, help] Chain Heal; /cast Chain Heal
; - macro for daily quests
Resto Shaman set focus on tank

Since I have a tank, all 4 shaman have a macro dedicated to healing the tank directly, and I have a chain heal macro that targets the one down the list from them without targeting the tank.
