Hi all, couple quick feedback type questions on something I've been tossing around lately. I'm trying to avoid sounding like I'm asking for a rate my group setup thread.

Currently I box a 70 Paladin, 70 Priest, 70 Warlock (destruction using fire with the mages' scorch bonus), and 2 63 Mages I'm trying to get caught up. I'm starting to feel the effects of the glass canon stuff already and I'm getting a little bit nervous. I think the synergy is great, and the damage is pretty nice. In their outland's starter gear the mages are putting out close to just over 200dps each from what I can track in omen. I'm sure this could be better, but I'm still working out the proper rotations for their arcane / fire spec. Mobs fall, albeit slower than I imagined and the dual sheeps are awesome. However, they are so fragile its getting frustrating dealing with bosses that have any sort of AoE or situational awareness gimmick, because the 2 mages go down like flies and half my dps vanishes. Before you mention it, I realize I'm doing dungeons setup for characters leveled alot higher than they are, but I feel the effects in Ramparts as well most especially the final boss. At any rate, so far we have managed full clears of Ramparts, Shadow Labs, most of Slave Pens (did not try Quag because I ran out of time), and have taken down Pandemonious once. All of these are non-heroic accomplishments and most of the credit going to my 70 trio.

I've recently been toying with the idea of just going back to the drawing board all together, and as hard as it would be to see, dropping everyone but the paladin to follow the gospel around here and roll up 4 shaman. The problem is I'm not all that familiar with what shaman bring to the table. Looking at their spells it looks like their buffs are nice and all but not knowing what stacks and what doesn't it's a bit confuddling. I guess what I'm looking for realistically are what kinds of things I would gain, aside from the obvious management perspective, from doing this? Would I see any pitfalls or gaps? Am I just doing something horribly wrong that I need to look harder at how my current team is operating to make it work better? In other words, what could I do better as the new group, or what could my current group do that a new group could not? If currently my hybrid group is close to pushing 1k dps, what might I experience in similar terms of damage with a 1 paladin + 4 shaman setup; ballpark figure? Please keep in mind my ultimate goal is just heroic farming; I could care less about pvp. I'd much rather play chess than dodge ball. ;)

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Max

What I recommend while you think about it is, go a head an spend a couple of hours to get your 4 shammy team ready and park them outside an instance(RFC to start). You can boost them with your pally when you are bored, or switch over to them if you want. Just build up that rested bonus. You will thank me later.

Thank you Fur. I really appreciate your insight. Your accomplishments thread really got my head spinning actually, and where a lot of this "theory-crafting" came from. Thinking "hey look what they can do" made me start to drool. It's good to know that it is possible. I'm just worried about setting myself up for frustration in the future, or having to over work to accomplish the same thing a pally shaman setup can accomplish with lesser requirements. In other words, I don't want to have to spend months compiling badge gear to run an instance that a pally sham group can knock out in vendor greens. Know what I'm saying?

Thanks again!

I had a major revelation today, but I don't know if it's the right choice. I hate the bandwagon so instead of leveling my 5 'all heroics cleared all enemies crushed' shammy group, i went back to my alliance 70s. Paladin, Priest, Mage and Warlock (I only have 4 in the US, my others are in EU :( ). I have read dozens of threads about how 5 shammies or 4 shammies + a tank trump all, but I feel like I should be able to clear everything 5 man with a mixed group, if my coordination is good. Am I right or am I missing something about 5 boxing a mixed group at 70?

edit: all I am doing is PvE, btw

hmm i am wonderin if the addon that shows my DPS is bs... Its called violation, it shows my shamen between 600-800 each at 65... BTW... i think shamen are the best by far for MB'in.. but im sure i will try something else in the future when i hit 70:) can nuke/heal/rez/tank/pvp like crazy... no need for anything else...

There only lvl 63 what yeh figure yer other guys where just as fragile at 63 :P Dont forget iceblock and/or use mana sheild.

Once yeh get em to 70 and geared up some more, they aint all that fragile.

I don't know ... maybe I'm doing it wrong, but with my group (which is identical to yours) my mages are not nearly as glass - but then again I have them as Frost with just enough Arcane to get improved CS. Ice Barrier is great for any time I want to AoE, and Blizzard works great at the same time as my rain of fire. I put up Curse of the Elements and Shadowbolt/Frostbolt spam - since my mages and lock have reduced cast time on those spells they are all in sync - making management of spells a whole lot easier. I may not have the uber DPS other groups have, but I've been clearing every instance I've tried. Also, for boss fights Icy Veins and the elemental make for a wonderful "oh shoot gotta crank the DPS NOW". Am I going to put together a Shammy/Pally group? Sure - but only once I get bored with this group
