I've been using macros for a long long time, and yet I don't know if this is possible.

When I do a macro I generally create the macro - drag it down to my action bar and then bind a key to that action bar slot.

Is there a way of creating a macro that is triggered directly by a key directly and doesn't need to be on the action bar. e.g

I don't want the macro to appear on my action bar (that's set up the way I like it) but say I wanted to use the t key to trigger a castsequence macro that dropped totems.

My ultimate aim is to have my hunter, shaman and warlock pvping in bg's. I'm having a hard time mapping the various abilities on to the action bar, so would prefer to have the ability to trigger macros that aren't in the action bar.

Hope I make sense.

Did some research - doesn't appear it is possible.

Not a problem as i've thought of ways to implement the behaviour i want.

Lookup keybind on www.wowwikki.com It should tell you what you can do.

Trinity Bars 2 to the rescue - geez I should be on comission ;)

With trinity you can have a stack of stored buttons that are exactly like all the other buttons except they are only accessible (modifiable) from the trinity options interface

If you don't want unlimited macros though you could just use bindpad

Yes it's possible - there are addons that permit you to bind directly in your spellbook.

You and your blasted Trinity Bars. I guess I'm going to have to give them a try some time this week... now that I've finally got pitbull tuned.

Try BindPad:
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=6385&so=&page=5AMAZING mod, thank you so much for sharing. I'd been searching for hours for a mod that would do EXACTLY what this does: let me bind macros to a key without taking up an actionbar space, without some fancy bar mod that I really didn't want. I tried bongos (2 and 3), dominos, trinitybar (2), supermacro, everything... and either none of these had that functionality or I'm just stupid and couldn't find it on any of them, which is very possible. Probably the most frightening/confusing part of my search was when I started with bongos3 and none of my normal UI actionbars were on screen--though the key bindings on them still functioned. I tried fiddling with the configuring and couldn't get them back. If not for that I probably would have liked Bongos.

I'm totally happy with just Bindpad right now, but curiosity makes me ask: anyone know if there is some way to quickly get the default actionbars back on screen in Bongos3? I know I could just make new actionbars but that would involve putting all my skills on the new bars, redoing my keybindings, making sure my bongo actionbars line up across WoW windows for multiboxing... just a big mess. I'm thinking there has to be a way around all that, else what a broken mod in my opinion. Bongos would be cool if I could use it to make additional actionbars without destroying the defaults...

But yeah, Bindpad really made my day. :D I should've known to check the forums here first.
