Just curious what professions everyone is using (if at all)?

For my team of 1 x Priest and 4 x Locks, I went with:
5 x Tailoring
1 x Mining
1 x Herbalism
1 x Alchemy
1 x Jewelcrafting
1 x Enchanting

I wanted tailoring for the awesome craftables available for the mastery specialisations, as well as making money selling selling off shadowcloth, mooncloth & spellcloth.
The Herbalism and Alchemy tie in nicely together, and can be good money makers as well.
Mining and Jewelcrafting also compliment each other (prospecting FTW!). I don't expect to make any money out of this (maybe at higher levels?), but the idea is I can craft my own gems at higher levels.
Enchanting not just for the ability to cast enchants on my toons, but also to DE any crap greens and sell off the enchanting mats instead.

I chose these professions with the main goal of being self sufficient and making money at the same time. I want to channel every spare copper I get into getting my epic mounts, rather than pay for someone else to craft / enchant what I need. I also never have to pass up a herb or a mining node I come accross!

A word about skilling up - I only mine and herb the nodes I come accross while questing / grinding, and at level 35 im about 160 in mining and 220 in herbalism. Tailoring is at 150 on 3 of my toons, 100 on the other 2. It would be higher, but I haven't bothered to grind any humanoids yet. :) JC is arounf 130, mostly cuz it's a PITA to get to the trainer. Echanting was the surprise package - I thought it would be a slow leveller, but actually it's the fastest - not only do I DE the crap greens and any BOP's I can't use, I can also DE the tailoring and JC crafted items I make for extra mats.

So does your main have the gathering professions and everyone else has the 'making' ones?

Hows it work if the alts have the gathering?

Yep - my main is the herbalist, an alt, with screen to the left of the main (I'm running a 5-screen array), is the miner. The mini-map for the alt is in the top right of the alt's sceen, which means it's right next to the top left of my main's screen - in other words I can monitor it while still watching my main's screen.
Additonally I use the gatherer mod and set it to display mining nodes on my main's mini-map as well, just for redundancy.
You only need the mini map for two gathering professions (herb & mining), so it works quite well. Would be a bit harder for someone running multiple sessions on once PC though...

My 5 clothy group does have the exact same professions for exactly the same reasons and I never wanted to change any of them. Everyone is a tailor for the craftable epics and I wanted a jeweler and a alch for the transmutes. I am not sure if the jeweler is necessary but i just wanted one :D .
I did make the mistake not to level the gathering professions till i was in my fifties and had to spend a couple of hours to catch up - if I had to do it again i whould level the gathering proffessions while leveling up.

You have my respect :) myself I have 5 chars with 125 enchanting and 2 chars with 150 tailoring. After getting that I decided just to bank all the mats and at lvl 70 powerlevel all professions to full :)

my nightmare is enchant leveling: switching between screens, pressing "enchant" button, selecting item I want to enchant, press "accept" on question about enchanting enchanted item... rawr

Why do you have 5 Enchanters? If you don't mind me asking.

Paladin (Main): Mining + Herbalism (The Collector - I don't want to switch to another char each time that I see something on the map)

Priest: Tailoring + Enchanting (he disenchants the BOP Items)

Mage #01: Tailoring + Alchemy (he gets the herbs from the Main)
Mage #02: Tailoring + Jewelcrafting (he gets the ore from the Main)
Mage #03: Tailoring + Inscripting (Inscripting = new profession in "Wrath of the Lich King")

I wanted to be able to disenchant all quest bop's and at lvl 70 be able to use ring enchants. You know no one but you can make you ring enchant.

My 3 druids are kind of an experiment atm, but I also wanted to skill up as I went instead of grind. I have Skin/LW, Miner, Herbalist. I haven't chosen any 2nd profs on the other two yet. But it was important to me to have all matching gear and so LW was a must. Plus with my main skinning, Every critter we kill adds to the pot. I also don't mine/herb unless I come across it naturally and my skills are laggin a little behind but not enough to stop me. I also have the benefit of crafters on my other accounts, but you guys are giving me some ideas.
