my shaman have so-so gear right now that gives apx 15-16% crit. with the 5x totem of wrath I should be getting another 15% crit for total of 30-31% crit rating.
However my addon recount tells me I'm getting closer to 42-45% crit rating. I tried to test this by not using my totem of wrath, reset recount and I end up almost exactly 15-16% crit after 20 or kills. So can anyone explain why the totems are giving closer to 4% crit instead of the stated 3%? Are they getting an additional boost from the jewels added to my gear? Is recount just broken. Anyone else getting this high a crit rating?
Not that I'm complaining mind you, I think it's wonderful.
The totems also add % to hit.. so this may factor in. Not sure how your damage dump is calculating crit %- from spells cast or spells that hit.

A spell can either crit, hit or miss. Not more than one of this, so his damagemeters' crit rate is accurate. Hit wont calculate in to crits. Fursphere is right, shammys also have 10% crit from talents that does not show up in characterscreens, therefor you will probably have about 40% spellcrit if you have this talents specced.

I didn't read all the replies but from what i understand for spell hit/crit is that the roll is hit/resist(partial)/crit. So at certain point hit = crit. A fully resisted spell could have been a crit had it not been resisted.
I know i might get some arguments here because i know the melee roll system is different.
I know on my old raiding warlock with 30% crit (character sheet+desto talents) my 30% crit wasn't 30% on bosses until i stacked enough hit.

These do not show up on the character screen, just like warriors who spec for 2handers don't see the +5% crit increase on their stats, but its there.
Theres where the extra is coming from.
