View Full Version : My first experience with my 5-group in Karazhan

I took my 5-toon group into Kara last night (up to Shade). My group consists of my group (a prot pally, 3 ele shamans, and a resto shaman), a prot warrior, holy priest, BM hunter, rogue, and holy pally. Some notes about the run:

Trash: I AOE tanked group pulls and used magma totems since we didn't have a lock or mage. I was surprised at how quickly groups went down with just magma totems + consecration down.

Attumen: I tanked Midnight and the prot warrior picked up Attumen. Simple fight.

Moroes: Started the fight throwing avenger's shield so I got aggro. Shackled one, hunter trapped one, pally feared another, and dps killed one immediately while the prot warrior picked up Moroes. I picked up the pally feared add, and all dps burned him down, then we killed the hunter-trapped one. I made sure to keep my consecration on Moroes while killing adds so I would be second on threat. Simple fight once the three adds were down. Killed the shackled mob after Moroes died.

Maiden: Spread out my team around the wall at the start. Cleansed and spot-healed on my pally. 4x heroism DPS FTW! Easy fight and picked up my Totem of Healing Rains for my resto shaman.

Big Bad Wolf: This was the fight that I didn't want, but ended up getting anyhow. I've only seen this fight once across all 4 of my other single-box toons. The biggest challenge for this fight was reacting fast enough to the clone that was turned into Little Red Riding Hood. Kept up as much threat from my pally and tried to dps him down as quickly as possible. Spam heals for target=focustargettarget so that my resto was constantly healing whoever BBW was chasing.

Curator: We one shot everything up to Curator, but wiped our first attempt on him due to my bad positioning. Make sure to line up in a straight line at the back of the room, and make sure the tank keeps Curator within casting range for Evocations. During the first fight my shamans started the spinning wheel of doom and in my efforts to get them to stop spinning the instead started (and got stuck) running forward. They were half-way to the end of the hall before I finally stopped them. It was too late, though. We wiped (no worries, I can self-rez). I positioned them better on the second time and we killed him with no problems.

Shade: We wiped here three times and called it a night (it was already 1:30am). Mass dispel from the priest makes it easy to get to the wall - out of the way of his blast. Blizzard isn't that much of a problem. Just keep moving and dps'ing. The problem I have is that I need more health on my shamans so they don't get pwned by his pyroblast after sheep. Not sure if grounding totems can be used to avoid the damage, I'll have to try it out. If I can make it past the pyroblast then this fight will be no problem. The focus-fire of my dps takes the elementals down very quickly.

Healing: This was the toughest part for me. I 'drive' from my prot pally, and heal from one of my clones through key bindings and macros. I am able to heal my normal group just fine. The problem is that there are many times where I need to help heal non-tank members of the other group, and my macros are not efficient for that to happen. I will spend some time to fine-tune my macros to try to make them better for dynamic group healing. Circle of Healing is looking sweeter to me every day, lol.

Overall, I had a great time. The hunter in my group is a RL friend that I've run many heroics with. But the rest of the group were pugs who didn't really know what they were getting in to. They figured out pretty quickly on the trash to Attumen that I was multiboxing. Naturally they were concerned about how well the run would go, but after we killed Moroes the tone lightened up and they started asking lots of questions about it. They were really cool about it and seemed to have an entertaining run.

On shade :
If you have keyclone, or any other round robin make a macro like this...

/stopcasting
/cast earthshock (rank 1)

Its a little harder to do without "non-macro" round robin, because everyone would have to /stopcasting.
This is assuming you have shade as target, if you dont, add a /target shade
With 4 earthshocks you can reduce his damageoutput considerably, and most importantly you keep his mana up.
The clue is to interrupt his fireballs and frostbolts, DO NOT interrupt his arcane missiles at any time, this will make him use even more mana.
As long as you keep his mana up, he wont drink and pyro. If you dont have CC for the adds that spawns at 20% ? hp, kill them, they have very low HP, and it really helps the healers if they are dead.

Healing will also be easier if you make a macro to heal shades target.

Hope this helps, and GL getting your badges and lewt ;)
There are several members that have MBed kara, so feel free to ask anyone if you are stuck.

hehe tanking healing and dpsing in Kara! nice one :) Raidhealing through keybindings is going to be tough :S all i could recommend is you somehow bind Shift +F1-F10 and align the raid window so you can easily see the health of 10 ppl and press ur corresponding one.. although ur group you should already have covered :) hope you get some more HP and get aran down :)

As said above, the trick to Shade is to never let him drink by making sure to interrupt every Fireball and Frostbolt he attempts so he won't go low on mana. That and good dps, and you'll never get to the Polymorph part. Grounding totems do wonders for the spells that do get through. Also, if you interrupt Arcane Missiles, I think that's what causes him to move around, which can really make things messy.

I burn Heroisms during Flame Wreath, since that's one time that you know you won't have to move around. I've used Earth Elementals a couple times during the Elemental phase, but to be honest, I don't have a clue if they did any good. Fire Elementals on Illhoof though is the greatest show on earth.

Updating with my most recent events:

We had Wizard of Oz last night for the first time. The fight was a little rough at first since we had a couple of people who didn't know the fight. The lock feared roar, mage took strawman, and I frost-shocked tinman and kited him and toto around the room while killing dorothy. Once we killed everyone and the witch came out, I popped heroism and basically burned her down while ignoring the tornado.

I continue to have problems with Shade. I know what needs to be done to win the fight, but I am having problems executing the strategy. I didn't want to waste any time last night, so we just skipped him completely and went straight to Chess and then Prince after Curator.

My group has been successful killing Prince each of the past two weeks. I am tanking Prince with my tankadin, healing with my resto shaman, and dps'ing with the other 3 ele shamans. Last week we killed him on our second attempt, and last night we killed him on the first shot. Last night the group composition was my five team plus a BM hunter and lock (both guildies) and a pug disc/holy priest, OT tankadin who put on what little healing gear he had on him for the Prince fight, and mage. One of my ele shamans (Ultralisk) picked up the Nathrezim Mindblade, which I tried and tried to get on my mage but never won back when I was single boxing.

That is amazing to control that many different roles at once, I'd love to see your UI

I seriously don't know how you can tank AND heal AND dps - that's some skill for sure.

I just did Kara for the 4th time with my 5 shaman (all dps) - no wipes. This is the first time I've had 5 in there for the entire run. Usually I end up just replacing people who leave with a shaman.

The group was - 5 shamans, druid main tank, priest healer, pally healer (my 5's partner), dps warrior, prot warrior. The dps warrior and prot warrior were way undergeared. The two healers were t5ish gear.

So basically I was the only dps there and did over 90% of the raid dps (did about 1000-1200 dps per guy). We did all the bosses except for netherspite - too much of a pain to worry about the beams. I also got another lightning capacitor from illhoof.

I have to say - mana was the biggest issue on all boss fights - next time I'm going to have the pally wisdom me vs. salv - and I'll just use a salv totem.

On prince, the priest died at 50% and our pally healer 1 healed the rest of the fight - pretty impressive.

Nice! Yeah, I have mana problems on Prince, too. But I have Mana Tide Totem on my resto shaman, so that really helps out a lot. The rest of the fight I just chug mana pots as often as I can.

Two of the guys that were in the group with me are guildies, so I have macros already in place to heal them that I'm used to using when I bring them in with me in heroic runs. The other PUGs in my group I assign to my Z, X, and F keys once they join the group. I hard-code their toon's name in my Z X F macros to make it easier for me to heal them. My DPS is always [target=focustarget], and my main heals are [target=focustargettarget]. I drive with my pally, so I use more [target=mouseover] and shift+mouse buttons on him so my dps do not lose their targets.
