i am creating a step-by-step guide for keyclone and i'd like some input from users that have gone through it. my goal is to be as picture oriented as possible to avoid language issues (and yes, i will be looking to add multi-lingual internationalization to keyclone in the future). once completed, by some folks here can help in providing a proper translation.

here is the current page... not too spiffy, just a bunch of screenshots in a table.

http://solidice.com/keyclone/tutorial/

if you can check it out and let me know if i need to expand an area or i missed something all together, that'd be great.

Not being Offensive, but most of the documentation (and indeed the program itself) doesn't have much in the way of grammer. Personally I think this is something you should alter, if only to give Keyclone a more professional veneer.

This is one guy with a busy schedule, you can't expect miracles ;) Unless you're willing to go other all that stuff and fix it for him for free? :P

i had 'slapped' those screenshots together as a starting point for a how-to manual. seems people are overwhelmed by the number of controls on the main screen... so a step-by-step manual seems to be needed.

i was on the way out for a barbarque earlier today... so i offered it up before it was completed thinking someone might throw a paragraph or 2 together... helping to move it forward a bit... nope, nothing.

and exactly how do i add grammer to 'add', 'remove', 'setup', and 'connect'?

(radically toned down response...)

A lot of the program & the documentation lacks capitalization, basic stuff like Keyclone instead of keyclone (Its a product name, it should be capitalized), First letters in a new paragraph or sentence should also be capitalized. Its not a problem if you don't, but to me it just doesn't look as 'professional' as it could with some (relatively minor) changes to the program and website.

Again, this is not a dig in any way, Keyclone is a reflection on you, and you don't want to sell yourself short.

Thanks for posting this.

Have a irl friend that bought keyclone (e-check). This will come in handy.

=)

it's simple. i prefer it without caps.

im not a programmer.. i found even AutoHotkey to be impossible to use effectively..

but i found keyclone very intuitive. it took like 3 seconds to set up and all of the options.. round robin, do not pass, etc.. are all very self explanatory. unless you start getting more complicated (macros, scripts, etc)i dont really see the need for detailed docs =)

i have had a number of people say that they need something more (i had the FAQ and a wow setup.. going to the next level to help eveyone)

it might be a language barrier thing... so pictorials with minimal wording might solve it.

I found that using keyclone was a snap. It took literally 2 minutes to configure the basic setup and you're good to go.

As far as the grammar comment, it's an FAQ not a literary review. Don't really see a problem.

well, if there are grammer issues, not syntactical, then please...point them out and i'll gladly fix it.

for now... any help and/or insight into fleshing out the how-to guide would be more useful. it's been almost a year and a half since i started using keyclone... and since i created it, i do not see the complications someone would using it for the first time.

I'm the complete opposite, wouldn't never spend money on an Apple product when there are plenty of alternative that are much cheaper and do the same thing. ;)

It was just the first example to come to my mind.

Yeah but Apple products are good for your Karma. ;-)

yea, unless you expect to hand your songs to your friends or kids... at which point you can't... unlike albums, tapes, or cds, which you could sell, give-away, or play in 30 years.

and yes, you won't be able to listen to your ipod music in30 years... because by then you will have moved them between the maximum number of machines.

MP3s forever.

of course i should mention that i had an ipod briefly.. 1 month... then drop kicked it for a zune. the zune has been much better so far, with the exception of the iTrip car stereo thingy. both pretty much su*k but the iPod one was a bit better.

the zune also has added features like a better screen, easier interface for song uploads, and will interact with an Xbox (push movies from your zune to your tv via zune wireless... very cool)

perhaps the keymap can do with a full screenshot (all edits filled in) but for the rest i like it

ok, i just purchased keyclone because I want to dual box on a single pc. I got it working with basic passthrough's.
I white listed the 'F' Key's & created macro's on the slave box. easy enough & it works great.

However, I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what the keymaps are for & how to use them. I like that you created the faq page, but you breezed right over what I deem as the most complex piece.
I spent almost 40 minutes trying to just save a keymap until I discovered I had to give the name an extension.
What is a hotstring, what does it do, what do the names mean. Can I map one key to another key?

Do Alt keys work? I tried mapping Alt 1-5 through & they would always hit the regular 1-5 on my slave box.

Sorry for the question, but I'm just trying to help you help the other dumb customers you're going to get (like me) :D

does this help?
http://solidice.com/keyclone/faq.html#kc_faq_10

or this
http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums2/viewtopic.php?p=6407#6407

if you think of keymaps as translators changing a key into a 'hotstring' ... then the other keymaps would translate back from the hotstring back into a key

the default action is to ignore the hotstring. any key that is in the keymap of the active window will not be sent to the other clones... only the hotstring gets sent

the purpose would be to allow you to generically map to different keys depending on the window (or function of the character). this should give you plenty of key combinations and potentially finer control over your clones (ie: one key to order all types of casters to do a ranged attack)

if you'd like to take a crack at writting up a guide, i'd gladly put it in the FAQ/hotstring area (with proper credit, of course)

Hi keyclone,

Firstly, a quick thanks. Just got the app and it makes life a lot easier.

The tutorial is good as a basic "get it up and running" guide.

thanks Druid.

i definitely have to revisit the tutorial... and add more advanced stuff as well as update it for the new features (the tutorial shows v1.6b...)

if you have any suggestions or requests, just let me know

Apart from having a brain ache learning macro's ...

All I can think of would be to divide it up into chapters:

Chap 1 Download & Install
Chap 2 Setup (1, PC, Multi-PC, etc)
Chap 3 Other stuff
Chap 4 Even more advanced stuff
Chap 5 Etc

It would make things easy for beginners and advance as they would go straight to the section that interested them.

Plus you can concentrate on a particular area without having to try to remember everything :P

Just some quick ideas

I've tried making a tutorial for it at
http://home.comcast.net/~iamnotaloser16/tutorial.html

Since keyclone already has enough to do (korean and japanese language support ).

I haven't added the Keymap Editor, Mouse-Map, Command Editor, or Proxy sections. If someone could explain those to me please PM me so I could add them (with credits to you of course).

Ty :)

I still need to figure out what all the other sections do that I didn't know about.

very nice penguini... i think you have the right direction.

once you get it completed, including appropriate crediting of course, i'll include it on the main site if you'd like.

fyi... new version coming out tonight. a bunch of updates and new components.

doing language support with a changing feature set bites... you end up re-translating everything... so i've tried to push through all major requested changes before proceeding on language updates. (if you have ideas... speak now...)

Yea that would rock.

Oooo new stuff to play with.

looks good... but it needs more pictures. pictures along with text helps users with the context. highlighting the appropriate parts of the image would help even more... but i didn't go that far ;)

also needs more sections. at least 1 per setup area. maybe even a detail wow setup (ie: formations, macros, etc)

looking good... keep it up :)
