Just thought I would post something interesting for the tech heads out there.....

I am currently leveling a Priest / Hunter combo - nothing special there...

However one of my PCs (my laptop) is running Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and wine instead of windows.

Tonight I plan on going home and seeing if I can make Multiplicity work on the Ubuntu box.

WoW runs about the same on the Ubuntu box as it did when I had windows installed - so if I can make Multiplicity work it will be really sweet.

I may not get it working but so far in my quest to dump windows Ubuntu has been an outstanding success - 99% of stuff worked straight out of the box with zero config - and the few things I did have to configure or fix were made very easy by the excellent Ubuntu forums......its something I would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind a steep learning curve.

Is anyone else running WoW on a Linux box? and if so what software have to got to aid multiboxing?

Cheers
Port.

Now this is interesting. I messed around with WoW under linux last year and gave up because I was running into profound mouse pointer lag. (This was on a laptop that ran wow fine on the native windows partition.)

I just started messing around with a special Ubuntu 8.04 build that includes MythTV and am very impressed with it. Anything that can probe a variety of tv tuner cards, configure them and seamlessly walk you through a third party listings service is amazing.

Does anyone know if the maximizer/pip stuff is possible under Linux? I'm pretty happy with my recent system refresh to a Q6600, but am appalled at zone in loading times even using a raptor 150 and minimal addons. One thing I did notice when running wow linux on the laptop was that load screens were much quicker.

Im running 5 instances form a single sata disk and load times are about 15 seconds to load all 5 copies

Synergy works cross platform. Its how I started. (Windows and Ubuntu boxes, warrior + priest)Awesome. I was unable to make multiplicity work and I didnt want to dump my linux box just so I could use a software vkm type thing.

I will give it a go tonight.

Personally my Linux box runs wow just as well as it did under windows.

The ONLY thing that doesnt work is holding shift and clicking on my bags to open them all. I have to press shift+B instead. Certainly not enough of an issue to make me want to run windows.

Overall I am very impressed with Ubuntu 8.04. Before its release I was running 7.10. I had issues with the graphics card, issues with a few other things, trouble playing some types of video and a few other issues that I had to sort out manually. My bluetooth mouse didn't work at all and had issues getting Wine to install..... - so I kept my windows vista partition....

When 8.04 came out - I was so impressed with how smoothly everything installed and "just worked" that I ended up formating my drive to a single partition, dumping my vista all together and running only Ubuntu.

I got wine going in minutes, Wow going 5 minutes after that and everything else has been smooth sailing.......
As tech I find the difference in application of the same set of technologies very helpful in making me understand how that technology actually works (instead of how Microsoft wants you to use it)

So looks like I shall be trying Synergy tonight....failing that I will stick to just using 2 mice / keyboards and a lot of Macros.

Feel free to add more info! :)Great work there. Very impressed. Although thankfully I dont need to worry about any of the symbolic linking as I am only running the one instance of the game on that computer.
I could conceivably run 2 instances on my desktop (and have often done so in the past) but I would rather use 2 separate machines since I have them available.

Seriously - Ubuntu is "the shit". The more I look into stuff the more I realize that you can do everything needed with it, 90% of stuff is free and open source OR you can just use the windows version with wine......Linux is seriously becoming a mature desktop OS and not just something for sys admins and super nerds.

Still requires a bit of re-learning to break out of the Microsoft addiction - but once you kick the MS habbit its pure pleasure.

I gave up on Ubuntu 7.04 because of mouse issues. I had WOW mouse lag and I couldn't assign the buttons properly.
This is great news that 8.x has improved that much. Going to download an iso right now.
