View Full Version : How much can my 1 computer handle?
Wow... after about 5 minutes of playing with 2 accts and Keyclone I'm absolutely hooked and my mind is racing! So before I get ahead of myself and my finances, I'm wondering if anyone can help at a glance, to tell what my 1 CPU can handle... Before I spend half a day loading trial accts I figure I'd ask =P And if there is another post on this, I'll take that, heh.
ok here's what i assume is relevant info::
dell xps 400
pentium D 2.8 GHz
1GB ram
Nvidia geforce 6800 256mb
I've been toying with my 2 accounts in minimum quality and seems like theres no stress at all on fps, and I can definitely deal with the visual deficit for the mega-increase in fun.
Anyone wanna hazard a guess for me? Or dash my hopes? lol
3-5, depending on ram, memory card and if all are full screen or not.
Be sure to test in crowded places and not just starting areas with no UI mods.
Thanks guys! Installing 4th right now! Though the day may come where the monthly cost to play will induce vomit... it shall not be soon!

Power bill will probably exceed monthly access... tho perhaps not if you play on a single box.
Yea, I know you can copy directories... but how do you input a trial key to make it a separate acct?

Why do you guys create separate wow install directories? I been running from the same install no problems.

While it make work using the same directory, it also may cause a crash or disconnect, since it is trying to use the same directories to cache information.
As far as inputing a trial key to make another account, just go to the main WoW site and create an separate account using your trial key.

I'm a recent convert to the whole "multiple WoW on a single machine" thing, and gave this a bit of thought ahead of deciding how to handle it.
Apart from the potential for file access problems and data corruption / loss for any mods you might be using, the single most important thing for me is unique key bindings per-instance of WoW.
On each of my machines, I have a "WoW Master", which has all my regular keybinds so I can play any of my characters directly, and one or more "WoW Drones", with fewer key bindings (like movement keys unbound for example).
Apart from my multi-boxing, I still enjoy playing a single character from time-to-time and that would be close to impossible with my personal key setup because it's quite different between the master and drones.
I keep everything up to date with a simple sync relationship across machines and across installations. Update one, sync binaries, all done.
I'm glad to hear a single install is working for you though. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)
To the OP... let us know how you get on with that machine. I don't recall seeing any specific metrics for this sort of thing other than my own experiment with 5 WoW running on a 2Gb Vista laptop when somebody made the mistake of telling me it couldn't be done ;)
tyvm gang, I've got 4 windows running and I seem to have avoided the /follow disconnect problem with a "spread out" macro and not maximizing any window while peeps are on /follow. Seems everytime you get out of maximize you got to put in 3 more passwords lol =(
so 4 accts on minimum video quality is def playable, though before I hit shatt I'll be buying another 1gig stick.

There was some post at lavish about using one directory or many, at least for EQ, lax concluded one directory was best. I use one directory for 4 instances all the time with no problems.

So I tried running from separate install folders and I actually got worse performance. Kinda makes sense though, now instead of reading from one cache, it is reading from 5. Maybe thats why I was getting far greater disk usage?

Try to test in the highest populated areas you can reach on your trials. I entered Orgrimmar with three and /follow broke easily, two was perfect for my smelly old computer (Athlon XP 2400+, R9800Pro128, 1gig Ram).

ok, thanks for noting that Gig... i just tried running from the same directory, no DC and much less strain on machine. tyvm!!!

I am running two per laptop with the same install... No disconnect problems no real lag problems and no problems with different keybindings or macros. Those are all kept in folders per account names.
Just my 2 cents.
