So thanks to StumbleUpon and Zin's awesome write up about it I only discovered Multi-Boxing yesterday.

Sounds like I'm Columbus or something
"I've discovered a new world!", says Columbus.
"Um, excuse me?", says the native American.
"Shut up you," Columbus says, "I name the INDIAN!"
"But this isn't India," protests the native.
"Are you still here?" asks Columbus.

ANYWAY, sorry for the interruption.

Set up a core duo laptop to either side of my main computers screen. Set them all up with Synergy and Keyclone. Got myself two trial accounts. And I was off and running.

Made three mages and had a blast until I couldn't hold my eyes open any longer, reached level 6 at least.

Thoughts and problems and learning curves:
1) VERY FUN. I was giggling like a school girl again, (Yeah, not a pretty sight to see a 37 year old man giggling like a school girl... but I digress).

2) Tried to set it up with the Multi-Boxing version (if that is even the proper term for something that is no longer a version of) Synergy but experienced some kind of problem. It would start out as fine as a cold beer on a summer day but then it would stop communicating with the laptops and every time you tried to move the mouse over to those laptops the cursor would not appear and the main machine would lag to a stand still. No errors seemed to be reported and Multi-Box didn't state that it lost connection. If I stopped the server of multi-box and restarted it it would work again but only for a short period before showing the same symptoms.

3) Expect I am going to have to learn a lot more about macros. The thread here at Duel-Boxing regarding macros helped a lot but it also went to show that there is a LOT to learn about macros.

4) Looked into using AutoHotKey instead of Keyclone since AHK is free and open source... but AHK just goes to show that sometimes a payed for program is the way to go over free. AHK looks like I would almost have to learn a programing language to use it while KC did exactly what I wanted it to do right out of the box.

5) That being said, Robert (AKA: keyclone), you might think about putting some detailed instructions on your webpage. I figured it out and all but for a guy who works in IT it took me WAY to long for something that turned out to be pretty simple once you figured it out. I found the instructions that you wrote for these forums but even a simple How-To on your website may have helped shorten the frustration time. It IS a great program though. Looking forward to getting into it further.

6) Finally, my ultimate goal is to move up to Five-Boxing. It just looks too damn fun to pass up. I know the laptops will run two each as I tested that but what worries me is questing. It was not quite as difficult with three characters and three screens as I first thought it would be, especially with the help of Synergy. But I worry about having two windowed clients on each of the laptops. What is the protocol here? Is it just easier to farm XP rather than work through five characters on three screens to accept and turn in quests? Thoughts?

All in all my few hours playing around with the whole thing last night is going to pay off dividends for many hours to come. Had a BLAST and a big THANK YOU to the members of this community who made discovering and implementing this experience easy. And when I say DISCOVERING I mean "new to me"... I am by no means Columbus.)

i'll try to put up a step by step pictorial explaining how to get up and running. this weekend might be a bit hectic, but we'll see.

as for questing, i think the general concensus is to avoid gather quests... unless you really, really want to.

i had mouse click passing working... but only between machines. multi-clones on the same box just made wow flip out. it would make dealing with the clones a lot easier, accepting quests, trades, etc. hopefully i'll be able to figure it out and mouse-click-passing will return.

i'll probably put in mouse to keyboard mapping first... much easier and i think people would like it

Wow. I don't know that I need a picture book! Just a nice write up would do... I'm a monkey not a donkey!

But yeah... for the general computer public (though I don't know how many of those would be interested in multi-boxing) pictures might be nice.

Maybe a pop-up book?

i was thinking a pictorial would help those that don't speak english... as i understand the translation from babel fish isn't the greatest.

Let me give you two advices from a 5 boxer who is in his thirties:

1.) Enjoy your boxing experience and do not get discouraged by the whipes that will happen.
and more important
2.) Find a gentle way of telling your wife that you plan to play 5 computer games at the same time. Women tend to not fully appreciate that :P

I will sacrifice a hundered goats to odin if a woman who can appreciate multiboxing shows up in my life, hoo boy.

I'm doing a little something on multiboxing for my personal site, been thinking about pictorial to make it more user friendly, reader friendly. Go here, get that, do this then that.

keyclone, I think you did an incredible job on that tutorial, it helped me make the decision to buy it.

The only thing I would change on your site is the small size of the box for text, the warcraft tutorial page for example.

I might actually get a better machine soon to run more WoW and was wondering if I will be able to transfer keyclone to that new machine? I know I need a keyclone license per machine, wasn't sure how this was handled though for re-installs.

i can do a transfer... just takes some manual intervention. drop me a PM with the old and new system-id and i'll move it over no problem.

Man that's easy. Just pick on her till she demands you go play your game sternly! Not that I... uh, have ever done anything like that.

I might even be able to get my girlfriend to dual or triple box with me...

My wife dual boxes a Warlock and a Mage for mote farming

In fact, although I have more characters she has more level 70s (5) than me (3).

And, no, we didn't meet playing online games. We're celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary in October!

Bah some of you have all the luck. My Wife will never play mmos. I got her to Play EQ2 with me for a few hours. Gave her an account and everything. But she never logged on again after that. I can get her to play others like warcraftIII.

I once let her kill a grey with my rogue and she laughed. But that wasn’t enough. Surely you guys had to drug them or something: lol:

My wife played WoW for a decent amount of time. Though, my idea of multi-boxing has kind of scared her away from the game (probably afraid she'll get sucked into boxing too). But I'm slowly bringing her back into the fold. Though, I think it will end with me giving up one of my characters for her to run and me just 4 boxing on those evenings that she wants to play too. anyone ever have any experience with that? dropping from 5 boxing to 4? I don't mind having some setup be necessary in order to switch back and forth. But if it's gonna be a huge headache I'll just tell her she's gotta get her own account :-P

In that situation I think I would start a new crew to box four that only groups with the person who plays occasionally.

I box five but am setting up a group of three to play with my brother and his friend.

Good advice.

Well, it must be good because that's what I do :D

I have a few teams on the go (mainly because it's absolutely soul destroying to play without rested bonus - roll on the faster levelling Blizz have talked about!!!), and while most of them are "just for me" I do have two team specifically for playing with other people.

One of three, which I regularly play with my wife and a RL friend (I just provide the DPS and crowd control - relaxing, if mind-numbing, bliss!!!) and one of four which I only play with 'er indoors.

Works out really well, although I must say that it's really not that difficult to swap characters out when you want to. I often play only two characters for gathering / farming for example.
