Depends what you want to do really:

1) PvP - I rather suspect you'd be decent honour farming with 5 x Mages (with perhaps the exception of Undead Mages)

2) PvE - 5xMages aren't going to cut it in Heroics. They may be able to do normal Outland dungeons.

3) Outside questing/levelling - they'll do well there, most stuff is going to be one-shot.

If others have more expert opinions I'd be interested to see how 5xSquishy-Glass-Cannons are going.

IMO you're gonna want a healer for either PVP or PVE.

QFT.

Mages are squishy, and while warlocks have soulstones for that "oops!" kind of moment every 30 minutes, having to run just one character from the graveyard is very frustrating.

I've thought about this too, I have 3 mages at the moment and was thinking that 5 would be interesting for PvP and general questing, although how they would go in instances is a worry due to the squishy factor. I think for survivability you'd have to have the brain as deep frost for mob control (improved blizz etc) and the other 4 arc/fire or maybe fire and frost up to ice block for aggro redirect, although later on you will have invisibility for aggro wipe. 5 CC is nice though, it would be interesting to see how opposing teams would handle being sheeped by 5 mages. A thought occured to me a while back about the diminishing return of cc in pvp, maybe if the mages rotate their pvp targets then all targets would get max time sheeped, although I'm unsure whether the DR is based upon the mage sheeping or the target.

It would be so funny aoe people down in bg's, and maybe even win some matches in 5v5. 5 Aoe'ing mages will actually hurt.

But I guess it's not worth lvling a team to 70 just for that bit of fun, should lvl a stable team instead then ^^

Would Mages be able to AOE grind instances for EXP?

Sorry for the crappy video, but I was pulling 8-12 elite mobs Yellow conned, 1 - 2 levels higher than my crew.

For BGs and Arena, I would pick Shaman. Mages are very squishy.

Here's something I wrote awhile ago that happened while multiboxing my team with mages.
3 shaman or 2shammy/1mage? ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=68057&highlight=mages#post68057')

I'm leveling my mages now have 3x56 and 1x45.. thinking about brining that 45 to match with the other guys. I already have 4xlocks at 70 but for pvp they're just too slow at killing stuff .. dots take forever. My shammies are at 38 but too be honest I'm having more fun with the mages/locks. yeah they're squishy but the idea of running into a group and just aoe like crazy puts a smile on my face hehe With the priest spamming holy nova and mending hopefully that will give enough time for some carnage :)

Then there's that not-so-priceless moment when all 4 of your shammies are out of Ankh. *****

This should automatically deduct 1 level from every Shaman involved. ;)

If you use a mod like auto-refill, then you won't have to worry about running out of reagents.

i run 5 undead mages. they are to squishy to do heroics or any 5 man equal to their level. running 1-5 mages back on bad pulls just sux.

having 5 sheeps is great. AV is fun aslong as you have mana. and running invis into draks room dropping a massive AP inviso bomb killing 20+peeps in a few secconds is hella good times. having 5 fire blasts and leveling a level 70 mob is hella funny. 5 VS 5 arena is super quick kill or be killed matches. almost any group combo of people will destroy you aslong as they are agressive. questing and daily quests is hella easy. just avoid crappy drop gather quests.

I have leveled two mages(non-boxed) to 70 and I wouldn't recommend a 5 man mage team, it just limits you quite a bit. I would recommend using a pally in that group, cause a pally is a mage's best friend. Slapping down consecration so we can aoe our hearts out is priceless.

As a mage we are always on the verge of death and if you have everyone following you they will be a second slow and die many times. Then you have to corpse run... Add the Pally and you won't regret it. 4 x POM pyro is pretty sweet too.
