View Full Version : Any Advanced Strats for Improving Drop Rates? ;-p

Darn Selin (first boss in Heroic MgT) is hacking me off. He (supposedly) drops a very nice epic caster dagger that would be a huge upgrade to my 3 new shammies and 1 new lock.
I've killed him each of the last 6 days and all I've gotten is leather healing bracers and throwing daggers (all DEs). :(
Farming instances is tough when you can only run them once a day and need four copies of a certain drop.
Probably nothing useful here for others, just wondering if any of you have had similiar experiences with heroic drop rates and could share the pain.

In the old days it was believed to be that the leader of the party raid influences the loot tables to such a point that you could get different loot.
Like say, one guild in Molten Core in the old days always had like 2/3/4 loot items that literally never ever dropped if there was always the same raid leader. Ofcourse it's not the only factor so it was otherwise mostly random. So many guilds tried to enter with different raid leaders from time to time, and oddly, many guilds reported the drops dropping that hadn't dropped in the 3/4 months before.

Anyhow, this is all speculation. As far as blue has told us, loot is determined upon entering an instance based on the raidID amongst other things. Other then that we know nothing really. ;p

The loot a mob is going to drop is decided at the time it spawns. That Glowing Brightwood Staff I got in WPL on my first ever toon (a priest) was going to whoever reached the mob first :D
For instances, it's decided for all mobs when the first player enters.
As far as influencing what drops, you're S.O.L.

Random is random... 1st try got the plate shoulders, next two times was the Dagger. Keep trying!

I've heard rumors (somthing on wow radio i think) that blizz were either considering or had at one time considered changing the drops system to apply more to the group that were in the instance, e.g. if no plate wearers in grp, plate wouldn't drop etc.
Dunno if it was something that was considered and discareded, or might one day come into effect. I'd love to see this happen, along with the much discussed potential sharing of rep across characters on an account.

I believe the server load has some effect on them roll. I'm not sure how it relates to instances, but when I play early in the morning I seem to get better loot drops.
When I played Ultima Online people would tame dragons and take them back to their house. You could box them into a room or make a pin from boxes and let them go wild. The longer them dragon stayed alive the more loot they would have on them when killed.
always been a firm believer that the group setup does affect the loot, if it would be the raid leader, the master looter. Ever since we enver had item x drop in MC or BWL and other guilds had a zillion items. The first to enter an instance is a nice one to add to that list. Ill try to change that around for my last totem of the void :(.

Here is something to think about..
You ever did an instance a few times in a row, and each of these times 2/3 items dropped -every- single time?
Now we now the raidID is taken into account, so perhaps, if the raidID's are similar, due to being made one after another in a short time, perhaps that could stimulate on certain drops to drop again. *shrug*
Not really sure you could actually use this to your advantage, I don't think you can. :p But funny anyhow.

Nine days after getting "attuned" to Heroic Magister's Terrace, and running through the first boss every day, I'm....
0 for 9
On a related note, I've run Heroic SP 13 times now, had 2 shammy shoulders and 2 Quag's Eye's drop. That seems low to me as well.
Does God hate me?

Yeah... it's just random. If it's a 10% drop, it doesn't mean that if you run it 10 times, you'll get one either.
It just means that the average drop is 10% based on 10000000 drops.
Keep going at it...it'll eventually drop.

for what its worth (not much!) I have had long strings of the same loot dropping off every boss in an instance 5-6 times in a row with back to back resets... then having the entire loot table for all bosses be different on the next run if I re-arrange my party leader and who enters first...
I tend to chalk that up to placebo effect + random number generator that takes a seed based on some combo of group/names/classes etc.

Without looking at the code I doubt we'll ever really know but more than likely what you are experiencing is a case of Poisson clumping. Check this book out for an interesting read on this kind of stuff. http://probability.ca/sbl/

I've killed Selin 5 times now with my group of 5 shammies. Loot has been (in order):
Plate shoulders, Dagger, Dagger, Plate Shoulders, and yesterday Bracers
... also still need 2 more daggers.
