*** EDIT: Added to wiki ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Suvega%27s_Brain_Dump') ***

So, I've been multiboxing for quite a while, I'm one of the original 4 Mage 1 Priest setups, and have been sticking through it for a while. I have a

decent amount of experiance, I would say well rounded. As I rarely speak on the forums (Vyndree does moar than enough for me ;) ), I figured I'll

take some time and brain dump everything I can into this thread. I'll see what I can do to organize it, and I'll fill this out as time permits. Maybe if

it is high enough quality, or peopel request I can post some of this in the Wiki, etc.

Lastly, the intention of this post is not directed at people who have never multiboxed before, as I'm too lazy to go indepth to topics which most multi

-boxers know, nor do I wish to link to references to anything either :P

Suvega's Setup Knowledge

Hardware Setup

For hardware for a 5-box setup, I'm a firm believer in 5 computers. Given the exponential cost of hardware these days, you can put together 5

relatively powerful machines, for under 500$ apeice if you get the parts from NewEgg, and assemble them yourself. For monitors, you can find 19"

monitors (HAAAHHHNNNSS GEEEEEE) for 100$ easy.

Essentaily, you can for roughly the same cost as your "OMG PIMPING QUAD CORE ZOMG BEAST" machine, get 5 relatively moderately powered, but yet

capable machines.

Why 5 machines over 1? Performance, latency, reaction time, and Flexability.
With my 5 box setup, I have over 60fps on all the machines, I can easily react on any of them within a heartbeat, and switch focus to a new machine

instantly
Lastly, it enables the use of hardware keyboard replication, which can be both a) forward proof (less likely to be banned imo), as well as b) faster

reaction in pvp.

For periphials, I chose the X-Keys PRO, as it provides a good easy layout of keys, which I can replicate in game on each computer to easily bind

actions to keys.

**The next section is theory - hardware - craft, as it is something I am thinking of doing, but haven't done yet**

With the ability to switch your 'main' essential in PvP, I'm coming to a limit of possibilities I can do using the software.
This is my current idea for a hardware setup:

Materials required:
1 - 5port or 2 - 4port vetra keyboard replicators
1 - 5port high speed KM switch (notice the lack of a V, its important).

The most important part of this, is the HIGH SPEED of the Keyboard/Mouse switch. You want something that can switch < 250 ms.

The Setup:

-- = single connection
~~~ = 5 * conection (like out of a replicator or kvm, has 5 cables)
Xkeys --------------+-------- Keyboard Replicator ~~~~~~Y-Mice --- Computer
Main Keyboard ---/_____________________________/
Mini Keyboard-------Hispeed KM switch~~~~~~~~~~~~/
Now, you use your main keyboard for everything, and the mini keyboard to type individual events to one computer. (like chatting).
Macro setup should not be reliant on a key being pressed on one computer only.
Bind WSAD on the main comptuer only, then when that character dies, use mouse movement (hold both mouse buttons) to move.
Software Setup
Currently I use a software setup, which I will describe below. I use a combination of Synergy(non-editted ver) and Multibox.
Why?
Synergy has a MUCH better monitor management system, and since my monitors aren't of equal size, the boundries for each don't line up. Thus
Synergy's ability to define boundries is priceless.
Also, Syn allows when you move your mouse to a computer, to only type on that one (even when multibox keyboard replication is on!), which I find
really convienent.
Multibox can broadcast keys. Enuff said.
To set these up in unison, requires some fenagling.
First off, open synergy on your main computer, and setup all your boundries. Remember, you need inverses too, so for every "right" of the center
monitor, you need a "left" of the right monitor.
Next, you don't want to spin like a top on your off comptuers. I personally like to toggle locking to a screen (instead of doing everytime you right
click or left click), as it doesn't mess up action bars or dragging items, etc.
Go to the options, and turn on relative mouse movements.
Next go to keybindings, and bind middle mouse to toggle lock to screen.
Now, when you want to move a character, move the mouse to the screen, middle click, and your mouse is locked to the screen, and you can move like
you would on your main. When you want to leave that computer, middle click again.
Now multibox. Just set it up like normal, open the server on teh main box, then the client on the main box. Then open the clients on all the client
machines.
Ensure that you don't setup monitor placements on multibox, just leave all those boxes blank.
Lastly, the uber trick. Ensure that the synergy server is ALWAYS OPENED LAST. Therefore most likely at the very end you'll have to close the
synergy server and open it up again, to ensure that it was the last opened. This is to ensure that they Key grabs from Multibox and Synergy play well
together.
Now, you can toggle keyboard broadcasting with your hotkey (I use Tilda ~), and still use synergy to switch between monitors.
If you did everything correctly, you can have keyboard broadcasting on, move your mouse to a single computer, and start typing and it won't
broadcast to every machine. Then move your mouse back to the main computer, and broadcasting should continue. YAY.
UI Setup
The trick to great UI setup is a combination of GLANCABILITY, and ease of macro change.
<< TBD, insert screenshot of UI >>
As you can see, I prefer XPerl. This allows me to see what each of my party members are targeting, and align it up in such a way as to compare it to
what I'm currently targeting. This is essential due to how I setup macros (to be covered later). Xperl also shows raid icons on everyone's target, thus
I can assign sheeps quickly, and ensure they are targeting the correct mob, by glancing at my party and ensuring that they are all targeting different
raid icons.
Next I use bartender to setup action bars in teh form of the XKeys Pro (seen small on the right in the screen above).
I'm thinking of changing to trinity (I think) bars, as it allows much easier macro management. Vyndree will help me switch and I'll comment more
later.
Zomg Macro Setup
I am a FIRM believer in the the /assist macro method. It is FAR more flexible, as it allows your main to be targeting something that your followers are
not. This is ESSENTIAL for PvE, as many times you want to kill something, while building threat on another target.
How does this work? SIMPLE! VERY SIMPLE!
I use 'f', and the macro on every character is the same:
/assist [target=Char1name,nodead]; [target=Char2name,nodead]; [target=Char3name,nodead]; [target=Char4name, nodead];
[target=Char5name,nodead]
for follow, I use:
/target [target=Char1name,nodead]; [target=Char2name,nodead]; [target=Char3name,nodead]; [target=Char4name, nodead]; [target=Char1name]
/follow
/targetlasttarget
If you're wondering why only 4 character are labeled above? Its because if you get to the 5th, that means the other 4 are dead, and don't need to be
/following you :P
Why no focus? FOCUS IS FOR SHEEPS YOU NOOB! :)
On main character (party leader): Bind the key to "Mark Star raid target"
On mage 1 character, bind the key to the /assist macro above followed with a /focus.
Repeat for each peice of cc you want to do.
Next bind one key on all characters to perform their cc on their focus
/cast [target=focus, nodead]; [target=target, nodead] CCSPELLNAME
This means that with the UI I described above, you mark targets and have each mage assist and /focus. If you glance down and they are all targeting
a diff raid target then you're good. If they're all targeting the star, then you're a little quick and not accounting for lag on target changes.
Smash the CC button and you're golden.
Suvega's Leveling/Money Knowledge
Leveling your Characters
There is two popular methods to leveling your characters in the old world, "boosting" and questing. Both have their ups and downs, with the first
being a lot less time consuming. I'll split it up into the two sections:
Questing
Questing is by far a quicker way to method then going in dungeons (non-boosting), it provides a phenominally good XP / time, and also gives you
good experiance in how to play your characters. Multiboxing is tough, and it requires a large ramp up time, so my recomendation is:
If you are new to multiboxing, you should level your charcters through questing, mixing it with instances to kill the monotony
Yes, you can get boosted, is it worth it? Probably not. You'll be a noob for much longer, still getting used to all of your macros, how to use them,
what you need to setup, etc. DON'T SCREW YOURSELF, LEARN TO PLAY WHILE LEVELING. :)
Ensure you have the following professions on at least one of your characters:
Herb
Skin
Mine
Ench.
DON'T FORGET TO LEVEL THEM. YOU WANT THESE AT THE RIGHT LEVEL IN OUTLANDS.
Next, you will ask me, "Well what quests shoudl I do?", and I shall respond with:
Buy a leveling guide. (yes buy, don't be a cheap ass). Jaina's lvling guild, and Brian Kopps are by far the best. If you can see if you can get the
pre 2.3 version. If you use the pre2.3 version, just skip the collection quests that take a while, and you'll be fine. If you get a post 2.3 version,
you probably want to stick with the quests given, unless you feel like instancing to make up the xp gaps from skipping collection quests.
Lastly, wait until 60 for outland. It's worth it, and it won't mess up your XP curve in outlands. Believe me, the EPL and WPL quests are nice and easy.
Just do em.
Boosting
Boosting is by far the fastest way to level your characters. Period. In the time it takes you to quest out one 5 box group, you could boost 3 groups.
The XP /hr is rediculous and people have gotten rediculous lvling records (28 hours for lvl 70? wut?). However, there are a few downsides:
1) You will have no money (you aren't looting stuff, that slows you down, ALOT).
2) You need a lvl 70. If you're playing the lvl 70 AND your toons, THEY MUST BE IN THE SAME NAME. Otherwise enjoy the banorola
3) Its monotonous. Like seriously, its alot of just -pull-kill-repeat.
4) It is on its way out. Blizzard knows the issue, and is working on ways to fix this. It's not going to stay forever.
So how does one boost you ask? Let me give you the short sweet version:
First you need a lvl 70, in order of preference, you want one of hte following:
1) Prot Paladin - BY FAR THE BEST
2) Warlock, affliction (siphon life)
3) Mage
If you have a VERY giving friend, he can do it for you, and you can just follow around.
If you are going to do it yourself, (5box, 1 lvl 70, and 4 charcters to lvl), THEY MUST ALL BE IN THE SAME NAME. Let me reitterate once more. EVERY
ACCOUNT YOU EVER MULTIBOX NEEDS TO BE IN THE SAME NAME. PERIOD. YOU WILL GET BANNED. YOU WILL GET BANNED. GGGGGGGggGGgGG. :P
Order of instances:
(Clear the instance until you can get in the next one, then switch).
1. Deadmines/RFK (the one in orgrimar)
2. SM. Do the armory, then the cath, then reset.
---- If you have a prot pally you can continue ----
3. STRAT! Undead + prot pally = nice.
Stop at lvl 60.
Hitting Outland
Grats your 60! Yay. Take some screenshots, cheer to your self, Oh wait, there's Burning Crusade. DAMN. Go out pay for the expansion, load up
fraps and hit the portal :)
Now, here is your choice. You can either:
1) Plan ahead, take some time, but be financially secure
2) ZOMG I WANT 70 MEOW, RIGHT MEOW.
For 2? Just go ahead and follow the lvling guide all the way to 70. Have fun!
I personally chose 1, and I am VERY happy I did. Therefore, I recommend 1, because its the best idea imo, and I will explain it below :D
First off go do all the hellfire quests. You want to do these because they basically replace all the crappy gear you have with a COMPLETLY new set of
gear. Enjoy free epix! (err greens that are better then lvl 60 epix).
Next go do the Zangar quests. Yeap, you can do all of em. Why you ask? Because at lvl 70, these quests are grey, they give very little gold.
If you want, you can do the first half of the terrokar quests, but its not really needed. Don't do any lvl 64 + quests.
Next Hit instances! You want to lvl the rest of hte way in instances. It's going to be tough, but its worth it. You'll learn how to play PvE with your
group, you'll get decent xp, and most importantly:
****You save your quests for lvl 70.*****
For instance lvling, I suggest the following:
60-62 - Ramparts
62-63 - Blood Furnance
63-64 - Slave Pens
64-65 - Underbog
65-67 - Mana Tombs
67-70 - Sethekk Halls
Get your mounts (epic, its how I roll baby)
Now, that you planned ahead (right? :) ), you have all of these quests available to you at level 70, this is exactly what you want.
Take the money you have from doing instances and selling Large prismatics, and other enchanting suplies
First off, go do the prequests for daily quests, (ogrilla and skettis). Every day do your daily quests.
Let me repeat myself:
EVERYDAY DO YOUR DAILY QUESTS.
Next, go through and in each zone, pickup every quest you see, and do them. Take your time, enjoy the lore and actually read the quests (if you
want).
Now for the fun part, by the time you're done with all these quests, you'll have over 26,000g.
TWENTY SIX THOUSAND GOLD. OH EM GEE
Move it all to one charcter, take screen shots, then by the epic mounts.
Next, start working on the Netherwing quest line (you want dragon right?). Get that all completed and keep doing netherwing dailies until you unlock
all of em (with rep).
Suvega
Cashing in on your financial investment
I argue, that BY FAR the BEST way to earn money over a long period of time is DAILY QUESTS. In 2h40 mins I can complete my circle, gain a ton of
rep with SSO, and also pickup around 1500g + Many Greys + Many Greens + Aldor stuff + scryer stuff + etc.
Why did you just spend 26k gold on epic mounts you ask? Because it speeds up dailies A TON, as well as unlocks the netherwing dailies
(DRAGONS!)
I just started doing this on a regular basis (as regular as I can), currently I'm sitting around 40k gold in the bank.
So for your pleasure, I give you the Suvega Daily Quest Walkthrough.
Initial Quest Pickup
1. Port one character to Isle of Quel, and pickup More Ata'mal Armaments and Discovering your roots
2. Hearth back to shat, and share with your group.
3. Pickup in Shat Sunfury Attack Plans, and the Nagrand Survey quest.
4. Fly North East to the razorthorn ledge. Kill any flayers you see. Loot them on different people
5. Everytime you get a gland, use it on a ravager to tame it. You can only have one pet per char, so ensure to loot the flayers with other chars now
13. Turn in the quests, fly directly south (kinda east ish) to Shadowmoon
Shadowmoon
14. Fly to where its says "THE BLACK TEMPLE". It should look like a backward ] on your map. You want to be on the north part for the Ata'mal
armament quest
15. There is a nice row of mobs on the outside of the plateau ish area. Run down the row gathering them all up and kill them.
16. Keep killing them until you have all your Ata'mal armaments (5 each).
17. Go to either the Aldor or Scryer Quest hub, and pickup and do the gorup quest The deadliest trap ever laid
23. Fly up north to just south of the warden place, kill all the lizards in the flames to get glands for A slow death
24. To get more, fly up above hte warden place and kill all the lizards there too. Kill both areas, you should have at least half by now.
25. Fly west to Terrokar
Terrokar
26. From shadowmoon valley, fly through the south east of skettis northwards, passing by the two spots that the escort quest can spawn. If you see
it, drop down and do it.
find the escort as no one does these quests anymore.
28. Turn both in.
29. Fly directly west to Nagrand.
Nagrand
30. Right when you enter nagrand, put on your surveying helm on your main. (30 sec cd :) ).
46. Fly back to shadowmoon valley
Shadowmoon part 2
47. Kill any more lizards you need to get all 12 of your glands (it's wise to loot a few extra on another character incase a poison bugs)
48. Fly south to the ledge, and poison your peons. Always ensure that a group you want to poison has MORE THEN 1 peon, and that the peons are
moving. Next plant it 15-20yrds away from them, so they won't get bugged on crstal formatinos.
49. Finish slapping your peons with your booterang.
50. Turn in ALL of the netherwing quests.
51. Fly / Port back to shattrath
Shattrath
My team are all 64 now. I think I will follow your advice and start doing instances. I was wondering about the issue of healing. I read that a lot of paly/sham teams have one shaman speced resto. is this good to do once I start farming instances? like now at 64? or will that not be necessary until I hit 70 ?
Erm, guys i dont get something. I saw a lot of posts saying "ooooo, im getting 1500g from SSO doing the dailies", if it is said about doing dailies on the island i have to say its not true, just correct me if i misunderstood something. So, you can do 25 dailies quests each day, i dont know how many are at SSO but it must be around 10-15, but lets say 15. You get 10g for each avarage. Lets count, 10*15=150, ok lets count the greys and greens what you can vendor trash, lets say 35g (and i was generous), that is still 185g, so how the hell you make 1500g from dailies a day?! Its not even possible with the 25 daily cap, with the avarage 10g for each quest is still only 250g, ok lets count in the daily heroic, lets say 150g, that is still............................................ :D OMG, i LoL at myself, dont beat me so bad, iam enlightened, multiboxing............... 5 chars, so thats all *5 :D.
Ok, forgive me, im new to boxing, well, newer then new, just started to lvl up 2 locks for later boxing, my brain has to switch to think about 5 chars :). And sorry for the wall of text, i just didnt want to delete and i laughed a so good on myself. :)
Call it an average 10g payout and you are at 1150g without a single coin drop. Sell or DE the greens, pawn the grays, buy a blue cloak EVERY day that DE's to a large prismatic... random heroic badges from the bags, etc etc...
I don't do nearly this many quests and average 1000g daily. I *WILL* be doing the netherwing ledge prequests so I can follow this guide though, I'm currently spending around 2 hours...
In your macro section, I can not get teh source code for your follow macro to work when I input my characters names inplace of the "Char1name". However if i change the /follow to a /target, then put in my conditions, and pop a /follow on the next line, it then works.
Am I doing the posted macro wrong or is it a type o?
Its not even possible with the 25 daily cap, with the avarage 10g for each quest is still only 250g, ok lets count in the daily heroic, lets say 150g, that is still............................................ :D OMG, i LoL at myself, dont beat me so bad, iam enlightened, multiboxing............... 5 chars, so thats all *5 :D.
Ok, forgive me, im new to boxing, well, newer then new, just started to lvl up 2 locks for later boxing, my brain has to switch to think about 5 chars :). And sorry for the wall of text, i just didnt want to delete and i laughed a so good on myself. :)
Heh I said I can get around 1500g a day from doing dailies (not just SSO, all dailies).
25 dailies, minimum is 9g a peice, maximum is 18g a peice (2 that I can think of).
End gold from quests is around 279g each. That coupled with grey's greens, d/eing, etc. 1500g +
Terrokar
26. From shadowmoon valley, fly through the south east of skettis
northwards, passing by the two spots that the escort quest can spawn.
If you see
it, drop down and do it. Just a small nit pick, there are Three places the escort quest can spawn
Otherwise awsome post
Yeah, I pass by the two on the east side on my WAY to the quest giver. If I see it I do it. Otherwise pickup the quest and head to the west one. Fly around until you find it idea:)
In your macro section, I can not get teh source code for your follow macro to work when I input my characters names inplace of the "Char1name". However if i change the /follow to a /target, then put in my conditions, and pop a /follow on the next line, it then works.
Am I doing the posted macro wrong or is it a type o?
Any who.. Awsome guide... especially the questing and crowd control sections.
Good find, I changed the macro to def work.
I added this guide to the Wiki ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Suvega%27s_Brain_Dump') because Suvega was too lazy to do so. ;)
This is a great post, by a really creative guy. Just wondering: why you would get banned with accounts in diff names? And could controlling several toons with one keystroke be considered a form of automation? New to this, sry if this is noobish.
Accounts Info ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=8272')
Establishing an Account.
You may establish one (1) user account (the "Account") on the Service for each Authentication Key you receive from Blizzard. To establish an Account, you will be required to provide Blizzard with certain personal information and the Authentication Key provided to you by Blizzard. Your failure to supply accurate information to Blizzard when requested, or to update that information as it changes, shall constitute a material breach of this Agreement.
During the registration process, you will be required to select a username and a password that are unique to the Account (collectively referred to hereunder as "Login Information"). You may not share the Account or the Login Information with anyone other than as expressly set forth herein.
Blizzard’s Absolute Right to Suspend, Terminate and/or Delete the Account.
BLIZZARD MAY SUSPEND, TERMINATE, MODIFY, OR DELETE THE ACCOUNT AT ANY TIME WITH ANY REASON OR NO REASON, WITH OR WITHOUT NOTICE. For purposes of explanation and not limitation, most account suspensions, terminations and/or deletions are the result of violations of this Terms of Use or the EULA.
Limitations placed on Account Access
The ToU speaks extensively about what you may and may not do with a World of Warcraft account. This section highlights a few passages from the ToU that are most relevant to this policy. The core message is that you, and only you (with the exception of a minor authorized to use an account by a parent or guardian), should be accessing an account registered in your name.
Blizzard Entertainment does not recognize the transfer of Accounts between individuals. (Section 1E of the ToU)
You may not share your Account or password with anyone, except that if you are a parent or guardian, you may permit one (1) minor child to use the Account instead of you (in which case you may not use that Account at the same time). (Section 1A of the ToU)
You are liable for all activities conducted through the Account, including any activities which may be conducted by your minor children that you allow to use your Account. (Section 1A of the ToU)
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your User Name and password, and you will be responsible for all uses of your User Name and password whether or not authorized by you. Security of your account is your responsibility. (Section 1D of the ToU)
And, finally, our dual-boxing.com Community guidelines:
http://dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Board&boardID=31
If it is against the ToS of the game you are discussing it is against dual-boxing.com’s community guidelines to discuss ways of breaking said ToS. We are COMMITTED to keeping our hobby 100% compliant with the ToS of any game we play.
This is not a gray area. People HAVE gotten banned for account sharing (including multiboxing using a "gifted" or "wife's" or "fake name" account). Take this thread ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=63111') as a recent example. Or this one ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=42576').
And could controlling several toons with one keystroke be considered a form of automation? New to this, sry if this is noobish.
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/GM_Conversations#Automation
Semantics issue #1:
Is using one keyboard to send signals to multiple instances of WoW automation?
In other words, what is the definition of automation as it applies to WoW?
Using a keyboard setup like what you're describing? Not automation.
Setting up a macro with said keyboard that would, for example, automatically press Fireball each time it was available? Automation.
Great post Suvega. I especially liked you suggestion to instance grind to 70 and save quests for cash, and your daily quest route.
I have a team thats been 70 for about a month and a half, and I've been too busy with my raiding schedule to do my dailies everyday, or to finish the overland quests (I'm about 1/3rd into Netherstorm). I've been doing the dailies when possible, and finishing quests when I get a large block of time on the weekends, after I've done all the dailies.
* Do you think the travelling daily quests should be avoided before you get flying mounts?
* Should I focus on finishing up the non daily quests, or continue doing dailies first, then non-dailies?
I have two 70's from before multiboxing, and I was never good at doing dailies.. I usually just ran raided / ran heroics. They have nice post Kara gear, but don't even have epic fliers.
