View Full Version : Thank God for focus! A new multiboxers RFK experiences.

So I'm a relatively new multiboxer - my 5 shammys being my first levelling team. Until recently I was using macros that mentioned my characters specifically (a la "/assist asixz /cast Lightning Bolt") but knew I really should investigate and start using focus setting macros.

Fortunately, I did.

So, now, I'm in Razorfen Kraul, and have just finished dropping the main boss (Charga Razorflank) and collecting my (5) hearts. I'm reading up on WowWiki for the next quest (an escort quest) on my second screen, something I have to do because, amazingly enough, despite all my Horde characters this is my very first time in RFK (I usually just skipped the instance). According to the Wiki, it's just a simple matter of dropping off down the ledge below Razorflanks hut - looks easy enough and I can already see the golden "!" of Willix the Importer up ahead. So, I drop down.

Into 3 priests and 2 guardians.

The 3 priests are casting, and before I've even dropped either of the guardians, a 4th priest wandering past has joined the fray. I've now got 6 mobs to deal with. Guardian #1 drops nice and quick, but my main is taking a tonne of damage, and my healing of him is only just barely keeping up. Guardian #2 drops, but then a wandering patrol of a Hunter-type mob and his pet joins the fray. That's now 8 mobs - though 2 are already dead. I drop the Hunters pet and then another Guardian, but my main dies doing it.

Whipping out my quick focus re-selection macro I transfer focus to asevenz and 8,9 and 10 are now following and assisting him. Unfortunately he's already half-dead so I quickly heal him. Out of absolutely nowhere, I swear that a wandering GM deliberately spawned it on me, yet another Guardian joins the fray. That's now 9 mobs. Asixz is dead, Asevenz is nearly dead and there's still 5 mobs left. Before I get even another one down, Asevenz joins Asixz in the afterlife.

So now it's 3 versus 6 and my 3 don't have a huge pool of mana left. My trusty "re-select a new focus macro" gets another work out and now my remaining 3 guys are following Aeightz. The last guardian gets it, followed by the Hunter. Aeightz is hurting bad, so I fire off a group-on-him Lesser Healing Wave with about the last of my mana, and it's down to the 4 priests, still standing a range and casting bolts at me.

In we three brave hardy Shamans charge and the first of the four priests drops. The second is almost done when Aeightz dies. Time to re-elect a new focus, for the third time, and now my hopes rest on Aninez' leadership skills, with Atenz assisting. We quickly finish off the near-dead priest - and now it's a 2 versus 2 fight. I charge in at the next priest (I'm basically out of mana now) and manage to get him down, though Aninez comes within a hair of dropping doing it - a handy health potion saving his butt. With 2 versus 1 now, I despatch the last priest.

All up, there's 12 bodies around me, and 3 of them are mine. My guys were level 25 at the time, and the mobs were all level 25 or level 26 elite mobs. I had to change my focus-leader three times in the fight, pop a couple of health potions and deal with 6 mobs simultaneously at points.

I say that, not to big note myself, but in fact to thank this community for their help, advice and suggestions. As a new multiboxer, there's NO WAY I'd have survived this fight if I was still using my crappy old macros. There's NO WAY I'd have survived if I hadn't been reading up on all the good guides here and sucking in as much information as I could.

So, thank you "focus" and thank you community. My last two Shamans sat down, drank up, ressed the rest of my party and I proceeded to loot 9 mobs worth of drops....lol.

In the end, I completed RFK at level 25 with only 4 deaths (those 3 and one other) and no wipes (a first for me with this team).

Thanks all for your help. :D

Good job, I see you added all the group id's to the focus cascade. I was going to do the same thing. Still deciding if I want to use 5 Shamans or 4 Shamans/Paly.

I really think the macro system was revamped (focus) in 2.0 because Tigole missed his effective multiboxing from EQ. I know I miss the days of using macroquest but wow's macro system can exceed automated scripts if you just plan properly.

Very nice story Oz, and glad to hear the suggestions worked for you though I was expecting a wipe with one mob left at the end there :D

It came close. Fortunately all my guys had that blue staff out of Wailing Caverns so they can melee quite effectively (when they're all up). With just 2 left, and no mana, it was a different story. If this tragically comical situation had happened in say RFC, there's no way I'd have avoided the wipe.

Once I hit 30 and get the Shammy self-res, I hope (and expect) to be virtually unwipeable with that.

Wow, that is a pretty amazing story...

I, too found myself in a similar situation in RFK and I conceded defeat pretty early on. My Pally at the time had very low HP so he went down really fast... Thankfully, they created a new graveyard closer to the RFK portal (walking all the way from Camp T was the biggest pain ever!).
