View Full Version : Is leveling supposed to be kind of slow?

I'm leveling 3 mages, and I have just about everything down, other than extremely advanced stuff.
It takes me about 3 hours to get a level, possibly even more.
This is my 5th day since starting, and I've gotten to 12, and its still going pretty slow, maybe its just the collection quests, but I just have a feeling if I skip those I will regret it.
I've been doing every quest plus more than I usually do when leveling from 1-70, which I've done alot.
Anything Im doing wrong?

Depends how you look at it.
If you're leveling 1 character by yourself, you get through all the easier quests quite fast, but you will always need help with the harder group quests which are quite hard to solo.
If you multibox toons, you have to do the quests x amount of times but you can get them all done without much effort.
Depends how you look at it. When I get a quest now i just look at the quest objective and multiply it by 5 and just take it as 1 quest now >_<
I skip the collection quests, unless they seem very easy. They just aren't worth the time for me. It does seem a little slow to me too, but keep in mind that you're leveling up 3 toons, not just one.

yeah I get that aspect, but have you ever leveled toons like that before? Skipping collection quests?
Im a real hard ass about not finishing up a zone when I think I can finish it, which usually takes awhile.
But I guess I'll see, I just get bored easily, maybe once I hit 20 things will kick off.
I would pay another 20$ for a Dual and Multi-Boxing guide rofl.

I enjoy doing the collection quests in a sort of masochists sort of way. It's a way to grind up a little bit of xp you lack from always being in a group.
But compared to other multiboxers, I tend to skip doing instances more than once unless I'm leveling 4 or less characters.
Since you're leveling 3 characters, you could always use the Athene's method of leveling. But this requires a prot pally and a mage friend willing to help you out.
I really hate this guy's attitude but the leveling method is solid. It uses the tap system bug.
Also mods, from what I've seen and heard this method does not break any rules, however it is a bit on the iffy side of taking advantage of game mechanics bordering exploitation. If any mods deems this as against the rules, please feel free to remove it.

This is the first time I've played Draenei so I'm milking the starting zones for everything. I'm doing all of the collection quests on all my toons. This should take me to about level 20 and I'll hit the DM/WC/SFK/BFD/RFK grind after that. I'm looking forward to doing the instances.
I'm not in any rush to level. I really should spend some time on my macros and set up my X-Keys Pro though.
Off-topic: I'm a big fan of Athene. His boundless self-belief is a refreshing change to all the whiners who hide behind their level 1 alts and the anonimity of the forums.

At this stage I doubt the Athene method will be banned from discussion here but Blizzard are examining it and blues have posted that it is borderline exploit so I'd recommend not actually using it, especially given there are already methods proven to work safely for getting 1-60 in about 2 days.

Hmm. Do a lot of multiboxers grind out instances a lot?
I find doing quests would be simply easier, although on my server ,due to the lack of multiboxers, I tend to attract a lot of attention from horde and alliance alike. Horde attention usually ends up with all 5 of my shamans dead though :(

This is specifically what I want to avoid. It might have been more sensible for me to roll on a PVE server but I didn't. I'm quite happy leveling solo on a PVP server but as my progress so far has been quite clumsy, I can guarantee that I would not hold my own against gankers whilst five-boxing. Besides, it's a long time since I spent any real time in instances at the correct level. It'll make quite a refreshing change.

As a 3boxer, Collection quests weren't so bad...easy to alttab between 3 windows...asa 5boxer though I'm having nightmares keeping straight which window is which let alone whether I've tabbed to that window to turn in quests or not...if you make up for it grinding/instancing later, you can skip the collection quests, pretty much up to you. Doing all teh quests my triboxers kept up with zone requirements fairly well
Also, Knytes, what is the "Athene method?" I've not heard of this...and what 2day 1-60 method is there? seconded for more info :P

I keep track of which window is which when doing collection quests on my 5 shamans by just simply keeping all the windows open at once. Maximizer is wonderful and a must have for multiboxing. Alt tabbing works for 2-3 boxing but anymore than that and you'll have a nightmare trying to figure out which window is going to come up on alt tab next.
I cleared DM last night at level 20. Healing stream totem made the entire place completely trivial. Going to have to do Stockades once for the quests and I'm thinking about doing it sometime in the late 20's.

Just wanted to chime in on something here, for keeping windows straight, its part of the reason i use WinEQ2, it assigns all the windows hot keys (ctl alt+ number) as long as I opne and log them in the same way each time, I always know which window is which character, makes it a lot nicer... at least to me :D
[...]Im a real hard ass about not finishing up a zone when I think I can finish it, which usually takes awhile.
Change that attitude and gain time :P
If you have enough characters you can do instances too. I almost exclusively levelled through instances and instance quests for the last couple of levels (22-28). It takes some time too, but it depends on the instance and your tactics. The loot and money is great though!
But I guess I'll see, I just get bored easily, maybe once I hit 20 things will kick off.

Don't forget to check our *free* wiki pages (http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)!

Just to reply about collection quests and losing track of which window is which. If you're on a Mac, you can use the Exposé function. I have bound to my middle mouse button (default is F9). So I have my main running along killing things or finding items that have little sparkles, click the middle mouse button and it gives me all five windows. The first window will be your main, and the second will be your last 'viewed' window. Go to the second window and loot on your alt. Middle mouse again, second window which puts you back to your main (since it was the last one viewed). Then you end up just looking at those two windows until your alt has the quest completed, then you move to the next alt. You always want your main to be the last one doing the quest this way you don't miss any loot or sparkles that you would have seen on an alt.

The biggest thing I realized when leveling my mages was.. OMFG my AOE!! Gather em up and AOE. I really had to stop killing one target at a time unless it was a boss. Killing one by one with the mages was really slow. Hope it helps, made my leveling 10x faster once I realized this

@ Ectolese et al.
The "Athene" method was that used by Athene to pl his paladin from 1-70 in just over a day. The method has been questioned on the CS forum (can't find the link right now) and Belfaire (I think) stated that while it wasn't considered an exploit right now, it is borderline and Blizzard are making a decision on it so he'd suggest people err on the side of not using it. However, since it isn't an exploit right now I will describe it here and Ellay, Keyclone, etc can delete it if they feel it's needed.
1. Have a 70 prot paladin + 70 mage + powerlevelee
2. Zone into instance, paladin runs around and grabs all mobs, pulls them back to zone entrance and other 2 players, proceeds to concecrate/shield block
3. Once mobs are down to a few hp's each the paladin zones out and the mage leaves group.
4. Boostee tags all mobs, mage ae's them to death.
Since the mage is no longer in the group he takes no xp, and the paladin is out of the instance so he gets no xp. The boostee gets max xp from like 50+ mobs 10+ levels above them in a matter of a few minutes....exit instance, reinvite mage, rinse, repeat.
The 1-60 in 1 day 10 hours method is similar in that you just have a 70 mage/paladin grouped up with 4 people to boost and just go grind instances. There was a post on the general forums about it, and the poster posted here too regarding it so it should be easy to find....thread title was something like 1-60 in 1 day 10 hours :D....was started by an orc hunter called Grundawg or similar.
[EDIT]
here is one link but it's 1-60 in 1 day 20 hours, does include links to pull maps though so likely more useful

Lvln is kinda slow in the beginning. Until you hit 20 you just have to struggle. I made it from 43 to 51 this weekend and I dont got any 70 that helps me.
I just did quests and instances, avoiding collection quests ofc. Total of 6 days played. So atleast for me lvln is not that slow. I suggest you do what others have told you.
Skip collection quests and dont finish a zone just because you "have" to =).
Best of luck

For someone like me, this is a HUGE challenge lol. I find it soooooooooooo hard to leave any quests behind.

Well tbh I was like you before. I really wanted to finish all the quests, why is that? When me and a friend was questing its usually me that keep the lead on wich quests we should do and etc.
And I say: Ok lets do this one now. My friend says: Wtf? That quest is green, lets move on.
So I guess I have learned to abandon quests without feeling any remorse =). Now I abandon quests all the time. Im cured!
