I was playing with Wow Model Viewer ('http://www.wowmodelviewer.org/') this morning, just choosing random armor/weapons for my shaman, and I got to wondering what a good set of armor would be for the team (not about stats, just looks) and this is what I came up with...

Formidable Circlet (Mail - Level 47)
Royal Cap Spaulders (Mail - Level 57)
Dark Iron Mail (Mail - Level 51)
Battle Chain Girdle (Mail - Level 5) (Belt really doesn't matter, as long as it's black)
Black Whelp Gloves (Leather - Level 18) (Will need to be replaced w/ something else, reward from Alliance quest)
Merciless Gladiator's Kodohide Legguards (Leather - Level 70) I didn't even realize this was Druid only. Bah! Will need replaced.
Stormshield of Renewal - (Shield - Level 70) Dropped in Heroic Underbog. Yikes!
Crystal Spire of Karabor - (Mace, Level 70) Dropped by Illidan @ Black Temple. Yeah, that's never going to happen...
I'm going to have to re-think mine.
If you could pick any armor (you must be able to wear it, of course) just for pure looks -- what would it be? Would you mix and match, or just go with a set?
I know, typical woman topic... I am just curious. LOL

I don't care what my guys look like personally(I'm all about performance yo, no innuendos intended :p), but if it makes you feel any better my warrior once looked like a bag of Pastel Easter M&Ms; pastel yellows greens purples and the like, somewhere in the mid-40s with WW sword...but I crit often enough that I didn't care lol

Remember Billy Crystal as Fernando on SNL?
It is better to look good than to feel good
I've long been guilty of believing that function follows form.
My guild has 22 members, all of whom are me spread over four accounts. I created a cult of Blood Elves, made them all get haircuts and bleach their hair white. I designed a guild uniform so they would always look good when representing my name. And we all know that black is the new black, amirite? As soon as a young member of my guild can make it to Silvermoon City they get a uniform and they have to maintain the basic look throughout their training no matter what their class. This look eliminates a lot of good gear. They don't wear shoulders at all. [Warped Leather Gloves] and [Heavy Weave Shoes] are grey items. Bracers ruin the sleeves of the imported [Stylish Black Shirt]. There are no enchants or armor kits available for [Tuxedo Pants]. Fortunately, there is good chest armor that remains mostly hidden underneath the guild tabard. After level 40 there are some gloves that work with the style. And I'll allow any belt that aids the class. Needless to say, I'm avoiding PvP during all this. I seem to get more duel challenges as well. *shrug* It's just another way I entertain myself. As soon as they are all old enough I'll put red sneakers on'm.

The troll shamans are raising a big stink about it and I'm cutting them a lot of slack. And I'm the boss so I wear what I want.

Best set combination in the game is a Mail Taurein in the Judgement Armor. Notign beats it XD

I care not how I look. Stats first, and then vendor value 2nd, with looks a distant 3rd. Although I'll say that Jade plate armor on a human female is pretty nice :p
BTW. You can put spellthread and leg armors on the Tuxedo Pants. And the Simple Black Dress you can put the L35+ chest enchants on. There's also a L1 equippable monocle and some other stuff from fishing you can snag and put various enchants on... great twink items :)

Since they reduced the HUMONGOUSIZED orc shoulders, I don't much care any more. :) Color me disappointed. Though I am somewhat partial to glowy stuff, like that shield with the dragon face motif that breathes fire. ;)
Best set combination in the game is a Mail Taurein in the Judgement Armor. Notign beats it XDGnome with Judgement gear and Sulfras, Hand of Ragnoros. Likes funny as hell and yet badass at the same time.
Don't let them tear you down, looks pwn! go girl go!

I think most of them were misunderstanding me anyway :) You all keep saying "I don't care about looks, I just look at stats" -- Well SO DO I, except for in this case, where I would like a "kick ass" look to wear in towns and such, my "real" gear doesn't matter, as long as it does it's job lol -- But as I said, must be a girl thing. I like looking good, but I know stats are more important :)

More power to you :)
But for me, empty bag slots > costumes...

That may change, because of bag space, but currently with all the extra space I usually have (because of 5 bags x 5), it's doable. But good point, I may decide not to later :)

That's one thing that stinks about having all this mismatching gear. Most of the time it looks like you just got finished raiding Goodwill...
If I ever get my gnome rogue to level 60 I will harass my friends until they help me farm the wildheart set. At some point I also want to collect the purple judgement set for my paladin (cursing myself for vendoring the mask of pennance). But sets are mostly designed to look good together (though I do question their taste every now and then).
I can't use the Model Viewer at the moment, damn my work :P
I love the http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25394 (deteriorating plate helmet) on a gnome, but the whole set doesn't look that good (particularly the shoulders). At some point I might try to get a set together on that sort of theme (with a nice simple sword), but it may be a while as I'd need to get a gnome that can wear plate to level 70 first.
Blizzard are I hope bringing in a wardrobe feature so that items don't need to be stored in bags. At this point as well as freeing up bag space on the 'normal' gear sets I intend to make some more fun sets. One of my druids has a level 10 robe with a tribal theme, so I might add to that. Also I'm planning to make a 'huntard' set which will encompass the best spell damage items, mail with strength and any other greens that I can't AH (my hunter is an enchanter, so my plan is to pick the best of what I send to de and then shard it when I get bored of it).
Edit: If I do ever get a female gnome warrior to 70 she will also need to have a shaman/paladin set. I really wish that gnomes could be either of those classes and in my opinion they look really good in the gear sets. I'm half tempted now to make a priest set for my mage :) can't decide if devout or hallowed would be easier to get. I would get the dreadmist set, but I think I'll save that for my gnome warlock.

I'm too lazy to build a "fashion set" ;p plus I'm hard pressed for gold as it is without frivolous expenditures lol, I did get what you meant but I tend to derail to a related rant anyways ;p
As such, I don't need silly clothing to look cool, I'm a Boomkin! All I have to do is shapeshift ;)
