This is copy/paist of: http://www.worldofraids.com/ just thougt some ppl might wana try this.
Gfx enhancement macro: WoW will look better
Some players found a way to improve WoW graphics by manipulating several console commands. The following macro will do the job:
/console farclip 777
/console horizonfarclip 6226
/console groundeffectdensity 256
/console groundeffectdist 140
/console smallcull 0
/console skycloudlod 3
/console characterambient 0
You have to restart WoW for some of the effects to be used.
What does this do?
• The vegetation can be seen from miles away (grass flowers etc) plus there seems to be FAR more of it.
• The "bloom" effect seems to be more vivid.
• The view distance is greatly increased.
• Everything seems to be more sharp and crisp.
• The weather effects appear to be more intense.
See below for some examples:
http://www.worldofraids.com/2008/april/terokkar.jpg

However depending on your hardware you might encounter some fps issues (low framerates), so here is the macro to revert the changes (you can also go to video options and pull all the detail options to minimum):
/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console horizonfarclip 1305
/console farclip 177
/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console skycloudlod 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1

it will become much "heavier" for the graphic, in my case, better not to touch anything :P
But yes, great improvement if u have urself a good machine.

Jea it hink its good if your running 5 mashens, then the FPS shudnt go that much down if you have new ones.

Hmm.. Perhaps you can make your settings even lower to make the game less laggy on your toons? I donno :)

Hmm.. Perhaps you can make your settings even lower to make the game less laggy on your toons? I donno :)thats a possibility
try half the undo settings for example:
From:
/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console horizonfarclip 1305
/console farclip 177
/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console skycloudlod 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1
To:
/console groundEffectDensity 8
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console horizonfarclip 652
/console farclip 88
/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console skycloudlod 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1
Just so you know, all of those settings are in the config.WTF file, I find it easier to change them in there.
And yes you can make settings both lower and higher than the in-game GUI allows (some do have a minimum cap though), I used to have my followers settings ridiculously low by playing around with settings when I ran all 5 on my laptop. :)

Just out of curiosity, can you use these settings to put the detail settings lower than they will go by just adjusting all the sliders in video options all the way down?

Likely, not to a point you will actually experience an increase in performance though. At least, I highly doubt it. The things you set down already have a minimal impact on fps, really. And the lowest ingame settings even lower, is probably an unnoticable difference in performance increase. *shrug*

Here's some YouTube videos showing the difference in settings:

You know, I always wondered about the vegetation... When I was 2boxing my warrior and priest, I would farm Skald for primal fires, and every so often BOOM... all of the vegetation and trees would appear. Then I would walk away and it would all be gone. I hadnt even realized there WAS trees there.

This is a quest in Blade's Edge from the Ancient Tree in Evergrove; he asks you to replant the forest in Skald. There's 3 mounds of dirt north, middle, and south; each seed planted suddenly sprouts a whole forest covering the immediate area, and also spawns a fire ele who is perma-aggro'd to you.(Which made for some interesting fun...got one spawned on me, went crow form on the 2nd mound and led the fire ele around to gank people lol)

(Yes, I've tried)

is there a way, via in-game macros, to determine if your wow window is foreground or background?
it would be really nice to be able to change the res detail on the fly using a single macro

I don't think there would be... only because I'm assuming that when Bliz coded this, they didn't really care if the window is on the foreground or background because they assumed everyone would just single-box it.... then again, that's just my assumption which means nothing at all. :)
You could just do it manually and make 2 macros, one of more and the other for less...

Thats easy. Just lower wow's resolution by 50%. Only works in windowed mode.
