View Full Version : xp or vista? 32 or 64 bit?
Hi all i am buying a pc to 5box on (spec below) and want to know what OS people are running?
vista seems a bit more demanding on a comp and if im 5boxing dont really want that! and is 64bit much more demanding also or not much in it?
Quad Q6600
4GB ram
500GB 7200rpm hd
8800GT 512mb

I have just upgraded to a quad core and installed vista64 it seems stable and drivers are fine.
as a rule of thumb i would say vista64 and xp32
There is nothing wrong with XP64 except you will probably see the new drivers dwindle away fairly rapidly for items that are outside the scope of the business market.
Vista32, what is the point your performance will probably be better on XP32
If you want to use all of that 4Gb you need to go 64bit BUT remember that if you can see 3.5Gb in 32 bit you are not actually going to gain much as that will be eaten by the additonal memory requirements of 64Bit processes ;)
for your system, take your pick, go with your preference and you will be fine :)
thanks for the advice think i will go with vista64 then as its more up to date hope all goes ok :)

Yeah Vista64 is good especially when you have 6gb of ram installed in your machine :)
No issue so far!

This is incorrect XP will see all of the 4 gigs if yeh want to use more then 4 gigs of memory then yeh need to go 64bit.
Unless yeh planning on getting more memory I would suggest go with Xp.

XP32 can only addrsses 4GB total including all devices. You will never under any normal circumstance be able to address a full 4 gb of system memory. Running a 512MB video card, then be sure to subtract that from your total. Running two 768MB visio cards in sli, now you get too subtract 1.5GB from your total.
Thats why a 64 bit system is so good, you dont deal with all the device subtractions to your address space.

I notice this is tagged [MultiBox] - I guess that's a generic tag rather than a reference to the MultiBox software, since that doesn't support broadcasting to multiple apps on the same host.
If you intend to use KeyClone, be aware that it's only supported under XP, not Vista.
From experience, I can tell you that you'll have no problems (with any of the versions to-date!) using it intra-host, which is what you seem to want to use it for, but inter-host has mixed results, depending on who you talk to.

I can't believe how often subject matter is recycled into new posts around here...
http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=40110#post40110 ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=40110#post40110')
long story short.. if you only have 4 gigs, 32bit is a lot better
well there is alot of mixed views here! after posting secondly i went out and ordered vista 64!
before i install vista
i do want to use keyclone so will it not run on vista?
and if i only have 4gb of ram is vista64 not worth it? you say 32bit is alot better? will i notice it for example - lag in citys or not run in citys lol(i will most likely upgrade my ram if that is the case)
like i said alot of mixed views its hard to decide,
basically i want to know have i made a mistake? will vista64 be fine and run 5 instances of wow clean with no problems and keyclone? or is it poo? lol
thanks for your input so far and sorry about repost i did search but not good enough obviously, will take a look
any further advice would be much appreciated
just read the toms hardware review basically it states that upgrading to 64 isnt worth it with 4gb as yes you gain 500mb more usage of ram but then lose it in other places so its on parr with 32 bit but i guess a increase in ram is next on the list :)
i shall do some research of keyclone working with vista

Yeh need 1.5-2 gigs just to run vista unless yeh disable that nifty gui and what not. Then if yeh do that there aint really a good reason to run vista.
If yeh got 4 gigs I would suggest Xp
If yeh wanna run vista go with the 64bit version and get 8 gigs
I agree with yeh Nitro but yeh can reduce how much memory the graphics cards eat up by changing the bios setting.
with that box yeh should be able to run a 5box with ease even if yeh run vista with cycles to spare.

As I said above, I can personally vouch for it under 32 bit Vista. I've not had an issue with any of the releases to date, but be mindful of the fact that it's not a supported platform.
I've been running Keyclone on multiple Vista 64-bit machines without any problems at all, didn't even realise it wasn't a supported platform to be honest.
Better not mention that I'm running it on an unsupported platform anywhere the author's likely to read though!
