Ok, so my account expired a few weeks(months?) ago. I really want to start playing again, but when I get on, I can't seem to actually play... I just run around and do absolutely nothing...
this might be the end of my WoW days as i know it (which might be a good thing because i will finally get a life....) but i don't know what to do....
i know this seems like i'm telling my life story here, but I need some advice... does/has this happen(ed) to anybody else? if so, what did you do?
will be very appreciative to any advice given :)

To be perfectly honest with you, I've hit this point several times with this game, and I ended up quitting.
The problem is that eventually something wrapped me back up into it, and after a long break I was able to come back and enjoy the game seemingly more then ever. My advice is to just take a break until the itch hits you again. If it does, come back and you'll have a great time, if it doesn't then it's clearly time for you to move on to something else.

I've quit WoW 3 times since I started playing. Each time I felt the same way, I'd logon, run / fly around and do nothing for a couple of hours.
The first time I gave up a 3rd party application renewed my interest in the game and I was "playing" more and more. I even bought another account or three. After a few / six months I was back in the all too familar rut again. iI took a break for a month until I found out my new GF (only a few weeks at the time) played WoW, so she got me back into it again. The last time I took a break because it was just plain old boring, I'd leveled 1 of every class and most had full epics so I didn't see the point in playing anymore so I gave up. It was only a few weeks break, then I discovered dual-boxing a number of months ago and I've not looked back since.
Moral of the story, take a break if you feel like it. If you want to get back into it then let it happen. Why do something if its not fun anymore.
A friend once told me; "WoW is like sex with your wife. Sure after a year or 2 it gets a bit plain & boaring but thats what cheerleader outfits and roleplaying is for. You just need to find a 'cheerleader outfit'" - The next time I was at his house I saw a saddle and riding crop in his living room. Neither of them had ever ridden a horse. I didn't want to ask! :whistling:
So when you find your riding crop and cheerleader outfit WoW will be there for you :D

If you get the urge to log on and then find yourself running around doing nothing, I'd say just get a leveling guide or pick an instance (depending on if you're 70 or not yet) and follow along with that for a bit to give yourself some initial direction. Once you get into the flow and feel like you are enjoying playing the deviate from the guide or go mess around in other facets such as a tradeskill, grind some faction you require for something, etc.
It will come back to you why you like and want to play or it won't and you can then safely go hit up the unsubscribe page again :)
Like others have said man, just take the break. We almost all have and it's no big deal. All your stuff gets saved just like it is and it only takes a few minutes to reactivate for another month if/when you get the itch again.
