Hello everyone!

Today was a sad day. I have been squeezing each and every ounce out of my current setup for close to seven years now, but I realize that the time has finally come to retire the old workhorse and go for something more modern and up-to-the-task.

My problem is me being piss-poor due to moving, starting new job, etc., so my budget is currently a bit stingy. At this moment in time I can afford about $1500 without resorting to rice & ketchup for the next two months.

I should also note that I only 5-Box. Never more, nor will I in the future.

I stumbled across an offer from a local shop, offering this build (+ case) at a discounted $1450:

Any immediate thoughts on it? Could I do better for the listed price?

Also, I am aware that a new series is around the corner. I am however in a bit of a hurry, and have been told that there is such a big demand on the new cards that I would probably have to wait a while after launch before getting my hands on one.

Any help would be appreciated! :-)

Whats the name of your current/old cpu?

Did you play at 1080p, dirx-11-legacy, using slot swap macro, 60 fps max front, 25 gps max background, slaves at settings 1, main on like 3ish??

i7 4770.

1080p, and tried the slot swap-macros and settings -- yeah.

More people (on Discord) have reiterated that I should wait a bit before purchasing any graphics card, so I'll probably hold off a bit on that part. I might have a 970 stored somewhere as a (very) temporary option.

Get something like this:

More cores = king.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/npfJvW

Then continue to use your old gpu for now. If you are happy with it, who knows.. then stick with it. Money saved.

Before christmas, i think you should be able to get something "around the performance of the old 2080 ti (if not even more)" for around 400-500 dollars (thats why i increased the powersupply watts a bit, to cover any spikes needed by a newer gpu).

Good luck :)

It's painstakingly difficult to recommend any hardware right now, at their current prices, when:

1) New GPUs from nVidia are being released on the 17th and 24th of this month
2) New GPUs from AMD are being released in October/November
3) New CPUs from AMD are being released in October/November

That's what I'll probably end up doing; getting all but the GPU and just stick with my current for a couple of months. Worthwhile :)
Thank you!

Yeah, fair point. I realize that I should just hold off. Might cause a lot of headaches, but will be worth it in the end. Last time I upgraded I bought a 970 just a couple of months before the next series were launched. Always regretted that.

Thank you all for the input. Really appreciate it!

Ya that overall seems like a pretty steep price to pay for the GPU on the initial piece. If you can hold off, you'll be saving significantly or getting something much better.

Grateful you are always on top of things.

I feel like I just upgraded and new hardware is already coming out. Is Moore's law already toast?

Hell I want the RTX 3080, for 699.99 seems like a steal. Maybe evga will have it for 499-599. Hot dog!

Completely agree with all above - hold off for another month if you can. Even if you decide to stay with exactly what you have picked out already, it should be on clearance shortly.

Im using a high end laptop which is now dated, 6th gen i7 with dedicated 970 gtx 6gb, with system ram ddr4 etc runs on a cool mat due to the stress!

It’s dated now, through I am playing classic boxing 5 and it handles it fine but I can do with an upgrade with the possibility of tbc on the horizon...laptops cost a fortune... so I think waiting for the next several weeks is great information! I will
consider moving to a base unit again.

Up until this year my work gave me a personal IT budget of $5k/year. There were some restrictions, like it all had to be on a single order, had to be from their only approved source (couldn't just Amazon/Newegg my own DIY parts). So I alternated every other year buying the most expensive laptop I could find 1 year and the most expensive desktop the next year - gave the hand-me-down PCs to family.

I tried doing the $4k+ 17" "gaming laptops" for years, but never really liked the experience. Even with a 17" screen and a 2nd portable monitor I never did like multiboxing while traveling. It just couldn't compare to the large triple monitor setup I'm used to at home. I finally gave up on big laptops a few years ago and just went with a MS Surface Book. I really liked traveling with it, and it was good enough to make single player WoW look good enough while traveling. I did find that 13.5" was a bit too small for me, so 2 years ago I got their 15" model and it seems to work great - best mix of portability while still making single player WoW workable. (And I was on the road for 10+ months in 2018.) I liked my 15" Surface Book 2 so much, when I got home, I bought the dock for it, and had it all set up for my monitor/keyboard, but it just didn't have near the power as my older desktop (i7-7700k, 1080ti). I couldn't multibox on the surface book at all, and once I got all my usual applications and windows open like I generally do on a desktop it was struggling even when it was idling. I don't know how people game on laptops, much less multibox on them.

So last year I got a nice i9-9900k, 2080ti desktop system and its worked great - although multiboxing classic, even at 4k, isn't really that much of a stress test.

This year should be my year to upgrade laptops, but with no travel at all for the forseeable future, I'm thinking a new Ryzen 4900 and a high RAM version of the 3080 or 3090 should be great. Anxious to see what AMD rolls out in October.

I tried last week to get a 3080 and this week for 3090 ...bots beat me to it again! So i just got a system builder to build one for me, since it was the only way i could get a 3090 atm. I just wanted to be ready for Cyberpunk and Shadowlands. Now next week they will probably be hundreds of cards ready to buy..but im impatient 8)

This was actually addressed by Jacob of EVGA earlier tonight:
https://forums.evga.com/Message-about-EVGA-GeForce-RTX-3080-POSCAPs-m3095238.aspx

EVGA is the first manufacturer to publicly come clean about this since the topic gained traction, last night, after the Igor's Lab article.

A moderator of the nVidia sub-reddit was also compiling a list of GPUs and their capacitor configurations:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/izhpvs/the_possible_reason_for_crashes_and_instabilities/g6jivta/

EDIT: I'll add that I always hate being an early adopter of brand new tech because of situations such as this, but I felt that I had to buy into this generation for where I'm taking my multiboxing setup moving into Shadowlands. A buddy (Crum1515 from this forum) and I each grabbed a 3090 from the first set of sales, direct from EVGA, on the morning of the 24th—his card arrived today and shows the 2+4 MLCC/PSOCAP configuration, and he's been using it (and overclocking it) without any issues so far. My card doesn't get here until next week, but after Jacob addressed the issue (seemingly related only to 3080s), and the fact that nVidia is also using a 2+4 configuration on their FE design, I'm feeling just fine about my purchase.

Lucky! I have a micro center near by and got up at 3am to go get in line for one of the 12 3090s. There were 15 tents in line lol. So I just bought the whole PC with 3090 FTW3 ..this news about crashes had me worried. I feel better now. Let us know how things go with yours!
