What's the consensus on this gear? Is it worth decking out my mages in it for farming?
Depends what your goal is / what you are using your mages for.
If you are going to raid with one or more mages, then yes, otherwise for just dungeon type farming not.
Base hit chance for spells is 96%, if the mob has the same level as you and no specific resistance against the magic school.
On a boss type monster or one 3 levels above the character the hit chance is reduced to 84%.
So if you just run dungeons, take 2 or 3 points into "elemental precision" from the frost talent tree and you're fine.
If you do regulars raids with the mages you should get some hit gear - the max hit% chance you can have with spells is 99% regardless of hit% bonus.

For dungeon bosses (Hitting a L62 target when you are L60), you need 5% spell hit to "cap". You can get all that from Elemental Precision in the Frost tree (effects for fire and frost) and from Arcane Focus in the Arcane tree.
If you do any of the "normal" mages builds then all the +hit on bloodvine set would be wasted in dungeons, although it may free you up for different talent choices???
For single target dungeon targets: The Robe of the Archmage would still be better than the Bloodvine Chest, and Flarecore Leggings are better than the Bloodvine Leggings, but do you really need to focus on single target dps, or more on keeping up your mana and stamina for AoE pulls? If you have any access for T1 set from MC or the PvP gear that's probably your best option for high Int and Stam as well as some decent spell power & crit.
If you're talking about raid bosses where you're trying to hit a L63 target where you need 16% spell hit to "cap", the answer gets much more complicated. I don't think that's what you need, but I did this comparison a few weeks ago for my guild - note this is for those of us coming into Phase 4 with BWL BiS already.

Playing with Ginner's spreadsheet above (highly recommended for all mages) and phase 4 gearing. I was trying to figure out phase 4 BiS and whether 3pc Bloodvine set is worth it.
TLDR: It really doesn't matter, dps is almost exactly equal, do whichever you want and gear for quicker/easier.
Long, drawn out explanation to follow:
It comes down to 3pc Bloodvine (Chest, Legs, Feet) + Mindtear Band (ring) is esstially equal to Robe of Archmage + Bloodvine Leggings, + Ringo's Blizzard Boots + Band of Forced Concentration. With 3pc Bloodvine, mages can hit spell cap. So if you go 3pc then Mindtear Band is acually better than Band of Forced Concentration, because the extra 1% hit is wasted.
I say they're essentially equal, because the actual difference all comes down to exactly what buffs are present. The 3pc Bloodvine set ends up with 1% more hit and about 2% more crit than that 1pc, but the 1pc ends up with 33 more +Damage to Spells. So without any world buffs at all the 1pc is a hair better (less than 0.1% better). But with all possible raid buffs, and all consumables then 3pc is a hair better (just over 0.1% better).
To put it another way, 1pc is a slightly better than 3pc with sub-optimal gearing and/or missing buffs, but 3pc pulls slightly ahead once you have perfect phase 4 BiS with complete buffs, flasks & consumables. Either way, the difference is too smal to ever actually be able to tell based on parses/damage meters.

my long term goal for my mages is to get 8/8 Tier 2, but nowadays its difficult to get into a pug bwl raid on my server.
bloodvine set would improve my chance, but I think I will wait longer until more pugs start to do bwl.
tier2 looks good
all set bonus are good for instance farming
a good combination of spellpower, int and stamina

Does Bloodvine help Warlocks more than Mages for a 5boxer whose team is mainly focused on grinding dugeons?
In other words, does bloodvine help a 4Warlock+Priest team or a Paladin+3Warlock+Paladin/Priest team (or Tank+3Warlock+Healer) more than it does 4Mages+Priest or Paladin+3Mages+Paladin/Priest (Tank+3Mages+Healer)?

they way hit works you wont have alot of benefit wearing the entire bloodvine set in dungeons because most of the mobs you fight are <lvl 60. So aisde from the flat 1% resist chance you need 3% extra spellhit vs lvl 60, 2% vs 59, 1% vs 58 to be capped. I mean its still alot of spellpower on that gear just saying for its price its a bit overkill for dungeons and you dont benefit from any hit if mobs are 57 or lower (i.e. skeletons in strat).

^^ Agreed, where Mages can get all the spell hit they need for dungeons from their talents, Warlocks don't have that option. So, Yes - 3pc Bloodvine is better for locks.

yes it helps WL more then Mages, but only because it doesnt help mages for instances.
bloodvine set for grinding dungeons, Onyxia or ZG it's not worth.
if you want to raid BWL, a bloodvine set help your damage and will improve your chance to get a spot.
